Bottle purchased in February 2013 at the Brewery, served in Duvel Tulip, slightly chilled
It pours dark brown with a lightish brown, toffee colored head which doesn't last very long. When held to the light, it is difficult to see thru it however it appears a very dark, ruby red when held directly in the light. Overall, appears to be a dark brown.
Oak and alcohol come thru immediately upon initial smell. Slight alcohol burning the nostril with undertones of dark fruit and semi-sweet candy sugar
Mouthfeel is thick but not overly thick, normal for a middle of the road Barleywine (not to thick, not too thin) but closer to the thick side.
Taste is of oak, burnt sugar, whiskey, slight sweetness. The middle is dark fruit: date, plum, sugar, sweetness. All that subsides shortly after and the end of the the middle comes into bourbon/whiskey oak and leaves a lingering hotness/slight spice with a sweetness coating the mouth. Finishes slightly dry and sweet with oak and distilled favors.
Overall, I loved it! I was worried about how it would taste as I was unable to try it fresh but I can only guess that it has aged gracefully. Can't determine how it will continue to age, but it's great right now. I think they were $15 each and I wish I had bought more.

Thanks to DrAwkward82 for sharing this one at drewone's tasting.
Bottle # 57/113.
Pours a hazy brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, brown sugar, toffee, whiskey, and wood aromas. Taste is much the same with toffee and wood flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of woody bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that has a slightly better barrel presence in the smell.

on-tap @ the brewery
Part of a series of 4 barrel aged barleywines (purchased a bottle of 2 of the others) - murky muddy amber body. Barrel integration is pretty nice - vanilla, oak, smooth notes of bourbon. Not overly sweet and not oppressively "big" to make a 12oz pour a chore. Good stuff - looking forward to the bottles.

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter. Bottle #73 of 113.
Appearance - Murky ugly reddish orange. Little bit of a chunky off-white head. Lopsided collar.
Smell - Bright aroma. Very fruity. Almost grapefruit. Whiskey is very subtle but adds a nice dimension.
Taste - Lots of caramel. Has that distinct caramel barleywine malt flavor. Whiskey is less intense and even hides. Lots of grapefruit and other fruits. Bourbon comes back in the back end.
Mouthfeel - A little bitter, but smooth and not boozy. Medium carbonation.
Overall - Excellent barleywine. The base beer is very impressive and the barrel adds just enough.

Review #2600 poured into a Swamphead Snifter. #14 of 113.
A: Poured a murky cola-brown color with a nice khaki head which left a nice cap, loads of bubbles and some good lacing. A nice collar remains after a few sips. Very sexxxy.
S: Big toasted coconut, vanilla, some sweet toffee and caramel, hint of stinging whiskey booze, Earthiness, very light hint of funkiness which I love in this style
T: Initial taste has some barrel funk upfront with vanilla and coconut, whiskey notes upfront but very subtle and in check. Caramel and toffee with dashes of brown sugar peep in towards mid taste and the end. A chocolate presence noted as well. The finish has a somewhat long and lingering light bitterness, sordove dry even, a little boozey sting to round it out
M: Medium-full bodied, a little fading on the flavor profile, a tad bit overcarbonated for the style but otherwise its nice.
O: Very well done and much better than I expected after really disliking my Billy the Mountain and not being the biggest Upright fanboy. Impressive. Getting more and glad I have another!
