Used to be downtown across from the Brewery. High rents forced it out on Route One. He has just about all you need to either get started or to continue brewing. I like his mug and tee shirt collection.

Although Stout Billy has served the Portsmouth home brew community for several years, the store is now closed. It closed quickly, without notice, about 3 weeks ago, in Mid-October.

I have not yet seen Don around town to ask him what happened, but it is likely just a cash flow issue based on my observation of how busy his store has been when I visited.

Although his store was famously disorganized, Don would always quickly answer any question or come up with any needed item, He certainly knew where things were located and I could never stump him with a home brew question. He was always generous with his time to explain anything and had a wealth of knowledge about home brew, cooking, preserving, and I imagine many other things I never asked about.

I will miss the store.

I don't know about you, but when I walk into a store to buy food I expect it to be clean. I expect the same from a homebrew shop. This store is a pig sty. I once bought yeast there with an expiration date one year gone past. When I realized my mistake after going home, I wasn't surprised one bit.

OK, enough of the negatives. If you can deal with the mess, don't hesitate to go here. Don is one of the most informative brewers I've met, but getting what you want from him can be tough. He tends to talk a lot. He's helped me a lot with draft systems, too.

It's a tough call for me to go here when I'm in Portsmouth. On the one hand, he'll probably have what I want and more, and I'm bound to learn something while I'm there. On the other hand, I can't just walk in and get one ingredient I forgot without leaving feeling like I'm making a mistake, even if it has nothing to do with the beer that I'm buying the ingredient for.
