Thanks to drewone for sharing this one at his place.

Pours a clear copper with a foamy tan head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, caramel, toffee, fruits, wood, and whiskey. Taste is much the same with an alcohol kick on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with a nice barrel aged presence, especially the smell.

A: First off, the label is a thing of beauty. Deep dark opaque brown with a creamy mocha ring of head.

S: Rye barrel, malted rye, vanilla, oak, brown sugar, rum soaked raisins, molasses, citrus, peaches, lemon, citrus peel in the nose.

T: Oak, almost woody in the finish, brown sugar, molasses, vanilla, rye, rye whiskey, slightly tart lemon, some orange and citrus peel.

M: Full bodied, not smooth though.

O: A bit bitter, as the hops are present in the taste, more so than expected. Quite complex. I'm not sure what they were going for here, but it's delicious.

A - Cola with deep orange and ruby highlights. Thin film of light khaki head has low lance and ok retention.

S - Caramel, nutmeg, oats, pumpernickel, light ginger and leather hide, dark Belgian candied sugar.

T - Peppery rye, cognac, vanilla, oak, caramel, soft booze, raisin, plum. Nice complexity.

M - Little syrupy with a sharp boozy bite. Medium frame.

O - A solid strong ale.

Pours a hazy brownish red in the Saxo tall tulip. The foam, when poured, is thin but dense. Then it goes away leaving a slight prickliness in the mouthfeel. The aroma is a surprising wine-barrel whiff with a hint of acidity and damp oak.

Flavors are best described as "murky." Bitter and sweet, fruits and vegetables. Quite sweet. More of a liqueur flavor. Imagine beet-parsnip liqueur or pear cough syrup. I keep sipping very slowly on this stuff, and while it's pretty appalling, it does have a peculiar intrigue. Then there is that rangy smell of the Shiraz barrel with every sip.

Seems to be an example of "what is this stuff?" and deciding that is was strong, and had no apparent category, it must be American Strong Ale. From the 12 oz bottle bought at Beer Revolution in Oakland.

Poured from 12 ounce bottle into a snifter. A beautiful green cap and one of my all-time favourite labels.

A: Less than half a finger of head. Incredibly dark black and impenetrably opaque.

S: Odd. Honey? Alcohol? Fermenting fruit?

T: Meh. Boozy, grapeish, brandyish. Lightly bitter, with a noticeably spicy rye component. The high ABV and the rye whiskey barrel aging conspire to offer a stiff, abrasive drink. The finish is suspect, but dry, spicy, and tasty.

M: Underwhelming, if admirable.

O: Engaging, but ultimately doesn't make a transcendental effort. As good as a Double Rye Imperial Pale Ale aged in Rye Whiskey Barrels sounds to me, it isn't quite as I imagined it.
