Nice pale amber color. no head to speak of.

Nose is quite bright and citrusy. Lots of lemon, orange, melon, honey, and hibiscus

Taste is a little odd. Quick little snatch of citrus up front, largely with lemon. Fades quickly into a really acrid and dry malt. Very earthy and straw like.

Feel is pretty medium thin.

Sort of meh. Some interesting hints of flavor, but drowned out by the oppressive malts. Just not really well balanced at all.

12oz bottle poured into a pint glass, fresh, bottled last month.

A- Poured a dark golden-amber color with a slim white head that faded fast. No lacing. Lots of carbonation, small bubbles. As blonde ales go, this one's rather dark in color.

S- To begin with, there's a slight lager enzyme (aka skunkiness) aroma that last but a moment, clearing quickly. Once the beer breathes- light floral and spice and a dose of honey. Some light malts. Pleasant.

T- Honey and some spiciness, a touch of malt. Some tea flavor on the back end.

M- Very smooth and drinkable, well carbonated for some tickle. A bit bolder than I would have thought.

O-Not a bad light-side brew, but it could be more of a 'beer' as I've come to know them.

First had: on tap at TJ's, Paoli, PA

"brewed with honey, hibiscus and chamomile"

Medium amber pour with a thin white head that completely disappeared after a minute or two, leaving no lacing behind. Aroma of sweet malts, floral, herbal. Taste was about spot on for the description given, but still a bit weak and generic overall; honeysuckle, caramel malts, citrus oil, chamomile, a bit of rosemary-like herbal spice. Flavor fades fast leaving a bland, golden-ale aftertaste. Light-medium body, low carbonation, easily drinkable as far as mouthfeel goes, but not really something I'd go for again.

A- Golden/amber body with a bubbly, thin white head. Darker than most blonde ales, but not bad looking.

S- Honey, herbal tea, toasted malt, some spices.

T- Very light on traditional beer flavors, with more tea-like flavors coming through. Chamomile tea with honey are the predominant flavors that come through.

M- Definitely drinkable, light-medium bodied and medium carbonation.

O- Essentially an easy drinker with tea-like flavors. Not my favorite, but may be appealing to others.

12 oz bottle. Aug 2013 notched on the bottle.

A: hazy, lots of sediment. orange body. vivacious carb racing to the surface. head is meh. retention is non-existent.

S: smells strongly Belgian. chamomile and honey. smell sort of like tea.

T: sweet. slight toffee. initial sip makes me think that there is something wrong here... I don't say this that often with brews that utilize honey, but you can actually taste the honey. it surprisingly didn't ferment out completely. tastes like a heavily honey'ed cup of tea. until the finish when it dries out entirely. finish is like water.

M: average carb on a light body.

D: pass. too much going on here on a body not enough to support all of these ingredients. not sure what the goal is here, but they need to do some re-working.

A- A clear golden amber color with a small white head.

S- Kind of light, chamomile, some honey, caramel malts, floral.

T- Getting the hibiscus, chamomile and honey and they are work together very well, nice malt backbone, really floral/herbal.

M- Light to medium body, lots of carbonation.

O- A tasty spring session beer and being under $10 a 6-pack it is worth trying. If I saw this on-tap at a bar I would, but with six-packs I feel that I will pick up a six when the weather is warm and probably open one or two when grilling or relaxing out side.

On tap at Hudson St. Stackhouse.

The beer pours a golden amber color with farily decent head retention and light lacing. The beer smells pretty nice, as I get something of cherry orange aroma, coupled with some brown sugar and honey. The honey and brown sugar seemed to dominate in this lightly sweet beer, with a hint of bitterness on the finish. Mouthfeel is fairly light, and what flavor there is, drops off pretty quickly on the finish.

Mehhh... it is what it is I guess, but I'll go with a good German pilsner if I want something sessionable/low in alcohol. This would probably make a fairly decent transition beer for someone looking to upgrade from their usual macro swill, but otherwise... pretty sure I don't need to order this one again.

8oz pour into a wine glass with the opening course of the EVO beer dinner at Cantwell's Tavern on 2/27/12.

A: Pours a clear pinkish orange color, unless my eyes are off in the dark of the restaurant. Faint bright white head. Some lacing bits as you swirl it.

S: I got some grassy wheaty notes. Also some sweet honey and fruit and malt.

T: Much like others have said, light, grass, sweet honey and malts. Fruitiness is there buried for sure. Nice little session beer if you are into this style.

M: Light to. Medium

Some background: Evolution has developed four “seasonal” session beer offerings that are only available on tap at certain times of the year. Sprung has been offered for the last three years as the early spring offering, coming on tap just with the first warm days (which have come unseasonably early in 2012). So far, it’s been available mainly on tap or through growlers filled at the brewery, but I see that half-barrel kegs are now becoming available.

It’s advertised with a pretty logo that features a perky daisy and a tropical-looking hibiscus, and the official description of it says that it is brewed with “honey, hibiscus and chamomile” and features “fruity subtleties.” However, I’ve always felt that it’s a bad idea to judge a beer by the label or brewery description, for if you tune your palate to expect what the label promises, the result is usually disappointing. In addition, Evo is clearly tinkering with the formula, and so one year’s Sprung may well be quite different from the next year’s.

For example, most of the 2011 reviews call the appearance of this beer “light gold” or “golden.” I’d call the 2012 batch “deep amber.” It is lightly carbonated with a small head that dissipates quickly. Still, it sparkles enough to give it a fresh mouthfeel throughout.

It certainly does have a very modest “nose” which I’d say was more “dried herbs” than “flowery.”

It certainly is not best appreciated by sniffing or sipping. Drinking it a little at a time in a beer-geeky way is, truth to say, like sipping a big glass of iced tea.

To properly appreciate it, you need to swallow several big uncivilized gulps at a time. Then, rather surprisingly, it produces a burst of bold beer taste – again not at all “fruity” but reminding me of a really good loaf of sourdough bread. It’s lightly hopped, producing a tingle on the tongue and a pleasant aftertaste, in which you can detect the honey. Eating a slice of pizza at the same time, ideally one with sausage or pepperoni, does nice things to this aftertaste and vice versa.

Happily, the alcohol content is relatively light (the brewery rates it at 4.9% ABV) so one could have a couple glasses of this and make a midnight pizza from the local carry-out a memorable way to halloo spring back in.

I did find last year’s formula a little underwhelming, but I think the brewery has tweaked it more toward a bolder taste. It has found a loyal following locally. While it may not have the subtlety that the logo implies, it’s an enjoyable session beer and a decent way to welcome brighter, warmer days.

A: pours a clear light gold into an American shaker with a thin white head that dissipates slowly.

S: grassy, malt, light caramels, wheat.

T: light subdued sweet malts and wheat turn into a nice grass flavor with some lemon hints.

MF: light body and poor carbonation, a bit watery.

O: just ok as far as the american blondes go, there are far better examples of the style.

Served on tap at the brewery in an Evo Pint glass.

A- This beer was a nice golden color and very clear through the glass. There was almost no head what so ever from the pour from the tap. The appearance alone made this beer look refreshing and well designed for the Spring season.

S- The aroma was very subtle. There were some mild floral notes and some maltiness, no hop aromas detected. No notes of honey or Chamomile.

T- The initial taste provided some sweetness from the honey and bready flavors from the malts used. It is a refreshing spring time beer with some mild tartness at the end.

M- Very light in body. This beer goes down quickly.

O- A decent session beer. Nice to consume on a warm day.

Poured on tap into a shaker pint glass at FireWorks pizza.

A real kind of nice golend orange/amber body. Unfortunately there is not head on this beer it seems, or at least it didn't stick around. It didn't even manage to keep a collar while drinking.

On the nose here I smell some faint malt but really nothing. Not much going on here, kind of dissapointing.

First reflection on taste is that the beer seems real thin and wet. Luckily though there is a hint of some small bread on the finish and mild hop presence.

Overall there is just not a lot going on here for this beer, I couldn't get into it or find anything worth really mentioning.

Had on tap at Fin's in Rehoboth Beach, DE as part of the Evolution Beer Dinner.

A: Clear golden body with a small white head that starts off very small (maybe 1/4 inch), but lasted for most of the time I was drinking. Left some spotty lacing.

S: Grainy malts, a little flowery sweetness, and some nutty caramel malt.

T: Sweetness really starts to develop as the beer warms slightly, likely from the honey used. There is a floral flavor from the hibiscus leaves, but not extremely strong, especially compared to hibiscus juice.

M: Light to medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

O: Definitely a good beer for hanging out on a nice spring/early summer day as the name implies. Not overly complex, but pretty good and easy drinking.

On tap at Rustico - Alexandria. Served in a pilsner glass.

Very clear golden color. Short head and no retention. Nose has very light grain. Pretty boring. Flavor has the lightest of grain. Very very light hops. Really not much going on. No hop or yeast character, and nothing from the malt either. Just a really boring beer, even considering the style. Feel is quite light with medium carbonation. I didnt want to finish the glass after a few sips.

On tap at Max's Taphouse in Baltimore, MD. Pint glass. My first time seeing this beer, had to get it. Suprisingly enough we don't get nearly enough love from Evolution Brewing up here in Baltimore, only the standard bottles and a few drafts can be found. Was excited to try this one.

A - Dark gold, thin white head, steady crab stream, not much lacing

S - Mildly sweet, somewhat sour, hint of bitterness

T - Huge complex floral flavors up front with a creamy and almost savory middle. Light fruity notes arrive as it opens up. Very clean mildly tart finish with little to not much of an aftertaste.

M - Medium-light bodied, moderate carb presence.

O - The perfect Spring session beer. Very clean and bold flavors that aren't heavy on the palate with a manageable alcohol content. I'd definitely order again. Maybe for a Spring camping trip?
