Bottled on July 18th.Poured into an imperial nonic a clear medium to full golden with a great looking sticky two finger white head atop.Tropical fruit and grassy hop aromas dominate, mild alcohol sweetness as well.Minty-leafy and overripe fruit-like hop flavors with a big shot of sweet alcohol on the palate, the hops win out barely over the brash alcohol in the finish. As I drink more a real sharp grapefruit rind flavor comes into play. This is big and brash but the hops win out over the sweet alcohol wich can't be said for to many of the style,a great DIPA.

From BeerAdvocate Magazine Volume II, Issue III:

Our personal goal is to try every Double IPA out there. Thanks to Ballast Point for keeping our dream alive, and they also use one of our favorite hops, Centennial. Thick two fingers of head and rings of lace on the glass with nearly every sip. Sunset-orange color shows off the clarity. Heavy citric-toned aroma of grapefruit pulp, orange rind and a hint of lime leaves. Clean fruitiness and alcohol in the nose with hints of pineapple and mango. A little chewy with a medium body and lots of smoothness. Hop bitterness is sharp and cuts deep at nearly palate-ruining levels, though it never reaches a point of no return. Grapefruit rind, orange zest and lime weigh a heavy blanket on the taste buds. Shortbread maltiness in the middle comes through and then gets clobbered by the hops. Alcohol is very deceiving with only a slight warmth and faintness in the breath. Finishes dry with a long drawn-out bitterness that our taste buds just can't shake.

An exemplary example of the American Double IPA, hopheads should be aiming their sites on this beer.

Finally getting a chance to try this one. Pours into my glass a brilliant golden orange with great clarity and an inch of creamy white bubbling head on top of the brew. Good active carbonation. I can already smell the hops. Big explosion of pine and citrus oily hop resins wafting up from the glass. Sweet undertone with a kiss of cotton candy and caramel. Tropical fruit and earthy herbal accents.

First sip brings smooth sweet malts upfront that get bowled over by a wall of juicy hop goodness. Deep citrus and pine resins dance with an earthy, spicy undertone. Tropical tones and a bit of a medicinal touch. Bitter smack on the way down but there is enough malt to keep it all in line. Tasty DIPA.

Mouthfeel is smooth, creamy and full. Goes down easily with spot on carbonation. This is one easy drinking double IPA. Overall, I found this to be a tasty west coast hop bomb. Not earth shattering for me but damn good and one I would definitely drink again sometime!

I had this on-tap at the Ballast Point Brewery out in San Diego. This was my second trip to the brewery, and the first time I've had this beer. One word describes it; "flawless." This is the best DIPA that I have had to this point. Being from NY, I'm accustomed to East Coast styled IPAs. Despite that, I have a new found love for the West Coast style of IPAs.

This beer had a very distinct malty sweetness to it. The hop profile was strong but not overbearing. This beer was resoundingly balanced and highly enjoyable.

*As a note, this site has the ABV listed as 9.6%, the brewery had the ABV posted as 10.6%. I don't know if that batch was stronger than usual or if that was the norm.

Clear gold color with a touch of orange. White head that faded rapidly into a thin collar and wisps. Aroma is faint citrus, grainy malt sweetness, slightly piney. Nice hop bitterness, medium-high carbonation, medium-low body. Taste is grainy malt, grassy/floral hop and grapefruit citrus, very faint spice.

Bomber thanks to srandycarter. Pours a chill hazed orange amber body topped by a creamy medium sized, offwhite head. Good retention and plenty of clingy patch lacing.

Aroma is a melange of hops. Grassy, pine, and citrusy orange and tangerine. Subtle caramel notes underneath.

Medium body with lively carbonation.

Taste has a solid caramel malt backbone which supports a strong assault of citrusy and tropical fruits. Very well balanced with a subtle malt sweetness that doesn't intrude. Pink grapefruit and orange notes seem bathed in caramel. Assertive citrus rind bitterness envelopes the finish and aftertaste. Very nice!

Not as hopcentric as the other big California IPA's I've tried recently but typical of the style. Very nice balance in this one which enables it to stand as one of the finer DIPA's I've tried.

Enjoyed a tasty pint of this "S.D." style (What a great beer town!) DIPA @ O'Brians. It poured light clear amber, with a prety typical looking tan head. The lacing was fine and plentiful. The sniff was of light, guess what, hey we're in SD... .grapefruit. This is yet another SD hopalicious hop bomb of a DIPA. Waves of Grapefruit, continue to pass along the tongue, nostrils and all other senses. Recommended for all hop lovers.

Apricot color, creamy white head with great retention and lacing. Apricot, mango, honeydew, cantoulope, tons of melon. Juicy grapefruit, pineapple, tangerine, a touch of orange, and resin; a beautiful blend of citrus and melons. Somewhat high carbonation and medium bodied. When fresh, this is an outstanding beer.
