Had on-tap at Final Gravity in Roseville, CA

Appearance - A relatively clear golden orange, served up with a white, razor thin head in a 10 ounce snifter. Spotty lacing.

Smell - Juicy, fruity hop aroma hits first. Mango, grapefruit. Pine resin becomes more noticeable as the beer warms. Slight spice.

Taste - Considerably more pine on the tongue than on the nose. Lots of resin upfront and throughout. Hints of mango mid-taste, but are nearly drowned out between the strong pine presence and the grapefruit pith bitterness that peaks through in the finish.

Mouthfeel - Full-bodied. Sticky; near syrupy. Low carbonation. Dry finish.

Overall - I'm not a big fan of pine-forward IPAs, and this is one of the stronger "pInePAs" I've had. So much potential for a multi-layered flavor profile, stifled by the sheer dominance of the pine character. This is a well-crafted beer, but it's not my bag.

Big fan of the couple of BP IPAs that I have tried. Perhaps then big expectations for this double. Finger of white head and amber body, good look overall. Very big aromas. Got lots of orange, citrus, pine, a random floral note. Bright and hoppy nose. This had a strong malt backbone and overall bright, clean palate. Nice amt of bitterness and definitely caught a nice pine taste as the glass warmed. Bit oily mouthfeel (DIPA anyone?), but good. As expected. I was not blown away by this beer, however it was really, really good. Sculpin may be a bit more balanced than it's bigger brother... but this is definitely one to try for the IPA crowd. Can't wait to go to my conference in San Diego next spring. Go Ballast Point!

A: Copper with a light haze and lots of tiny particles floating in it. Virtually no visible carbonation, and 5 fingers of of beige tinged foamy head. It fades fairly fast.

S: Pine, citrus, caramel, honey, candied orange, spicy red pepper heat. Light onion, garlic scent.

T: Caramel, orange, pine, a bitterness that starts of light then comes in slowly with a numbing tingling quality on the tongue. Sichuan spice lingers on the tongue.

M: Medium light body, fine light bubbly carbonation. Feels light on the tongue and hides the alcohol well.

O: Really well done brew which hides the alcohol, light feeling for a double IPA, well done well rounded beer. 9 from me. Drank in Tallahassee, FL July 22nd after a long drive from Tampa.

"A huge, hoppy brew that will test your sea legs. Our Dorado Double IPA immediately hooks you with massive hops that never stop. Mash hopping, kettle opting and dry hopping makes this beer a serious hop lover's prize catch. It's an amazingly drinkable, award-winning beer that's as beautifully balanced as it is big." Brewed in the style of an American Double IPA. Released annually in 22 oz. bottles and on limited draft.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle to a tulip glass. Served above 57º Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a khaki white head of a creamy foam texture over an apricot amber body with fine sediment in tow and moderate haziness. Retention is very good, lacing is light and patchy. 4.5

(Smell) A hoppy nose of zesty citrus ream, tropical fruit and tart grapefruit. Bitterness is perceivably moderate. The malt body is a simple pale malt with a hint of biscuit and light toasted caramel syrup for a subtle body. Aroma is clean and moderately potent. The hops have a touch less lively presence than I had expected. 4

(Taste) The hop character and malt body are nearly in line with one another in this beer. Juicy orange and tangerine with a creeping grapefruit note, a little fresher and more flavorful than the aroma anticipated. Bitterness is strong yet in line with the sweetness of the body, they are well balanced at the conclusion of each sip. The malt body is a slick toasted caramel grain with a slightly boozy edge. The finish is mildly grainy with a resinous hop squeeze and a puff of alcohol. 4.25

(Mouthfeel) Texture is slick, resinous, drying. Carbonation generates a fuzzy frothiness for a softly crisp mouthfeel. Body is medium+ for the style, medium/heavy overall. Balance is equally bitter to sweet. Alcohol presence is moderate, and aside from some perks of booze, off characters are minimal. 4

(Overall) A well balanced and flavorful Double IPA with a lot of west coast bright hop character and a bold bitterness to match. My biggest complaint was a slight booziness that stole away the drinkability slightly. Dorado has been around for a while as one of the earlier pioneers of the increasingly popular Double IPA style, and at the reasonable price point, it's a justified purchase. 4
