This was a very good Oatmeal Stout and the growler dissappeared quickley!
It poured a dark reddish brown color with a nice brown fluffy head that stayed till the end. There was not much going on in the smell department, just some slignt smokiness and burnt grain. The flavor was very good with just the right dose of sweetness and smokiness throughout, and the smoothe mouthfeel made this one go down very eaisy. A solid brew and one I will try again.

Happy to find this one on tap at the Birdsall House in Peekskill, NY

Pours black, with a creamy mocha head, leaving thick sheeting initially, then a nice scattered field of the fine stuff.

Dusty chocolate, and lite raisins in the nose. This is a well crafted OMS, showing off more chocolate, dark fruits, roasted grains, with a soft and subtle hop presence drying things out. Cookie dough malts also in the mix. On the lighter side bodywise.

Thoroughly delicious, order it if you see it

Tap @ O'Brien's. Pours black with a 2 cm tall tan head with nice lacing. Coffee, cocoa, brown sugar, with a lot of oatmeal. Taste is disappointingly weak. Roasted malt, the taste of "Whoppers" candy, oats, and a bitter finish. Good, not great.

Dark brown in color. Nearly no head. Some lacing.

Some chocolate in the nose but this is subdued for a stout. Some roasted malty elements, but not overly aromatic.

Roasted malts, a bit of chocolate, a touch of sweetness along with some hop bitterness, finishes clean; incredibly drinkable and a balanced oatmeal stout.

Rich, luscious, smooth mouthfeel.

A delicious, velvety, easy to drink, tasty oatmeal stout.

On tap at the Ballast Point Tasting Room and Kitchen.

Opaque brown-black with a very durable, creamy beige head. Plenty of spotty lacing.

Feel: light-medium body that seems too thin; Medium carbonation.

Smell: Moderately strong mix of dark roasted malts. Hints of dark fruits. Approaches 4.

Taste: inferior to the aroma, partly because it is less complex and fruity than hoped but also due to some burnt grain qualities, especially in the aftertaste.

O: a bit disappointing, but only because this brewery has so many great beers.

On Nitro-tap at Capitol Beer and Tap Room in Sacramento, CA on 9/21/12

Appearance - Served near black with a dark, ruby red hue. Head is half a finger thick, light tan and appears silky. Retention holds well. Decent stick.

Smell - Fine notes of cocoa and oat hit the nostrils first, with the faintest hint of coffee buried well beneath.

Taste - Moderate roasted malt character; sweet milk chocolate, cocoa and oat rounds out the predominant flavor. Not much development from start to finish. Clean, with the subtlest hint of mint in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - Medium to full body. Silky, smooth nitro carbonation. Creamy. Goes down with a slick, supurb smoothness.

Overall - A good effort by Ballast on their oatmeal stout, but it ultimately falls a bit short. Boring, simple flavor profile redeemed by it's creamy, nitro'ed mouthfeel.

on tap at The Ginger Man. Black body, very roasty aroma and one-eight inch of head. Very smooth mouthfeel,creamy. licorice.Real coffee, though I am an ex-coffee drinker. Hoppy.Dry finish,and acid affects drinkability unfortunately for both these characteristics.

Nitro-tap @ Blue Palms Brewhouse. Served in a nonic.

When the cascading effect subsides, the body is revealed as a very dark brown, albeit clear, with very faint ruby highlights. Excellent multi-layered lacing like frosting - and a solid, thin layer of cream persists on the surface throughout the session.

Roast malt, tobacco, cloves, cocoa, light coffee and cream aromatics - very nice.

Roast level and hops synergize for the perfect bitter/astringent combination. Lightly sweet mid-palate, suggesting chocolate and a little toasted grain. Finish is dry, but not excessively so. Perfect accompaniment with food.

Creamy, rich, velvety, a style well-suited to the nitro delivery (though I didn't realize this was on nitro until after I had ordered it); though of course I'd prefer a proper cask given the chance.

Refreshing and really well done - this is in no way an afterthought from Ballast Point, but one of the better domestic takes on the style I've tried recently.

Perhaps I've overrated the look and feel, if you consider nitro "cheating," but for some reason the artifice really worked for me the evening I sampled this.

A - Pours black with a tan head that lingers. Lacing is average; very little.

S - Scents of roasted malt, toffee, and coffee is noted.

T - Decent flavor of roasted malt, fresh grain, and some coffee flavor. Robust on the initial sip.

M - A bit thin and watery, but is very drinkable, no carbonation, with a bitterness at the end.

O - A decent oatmeal stout, but I didn't find it anything that stood out over the others available. Worth a try, especially if you enjoy Ballast Point.

On nitro-tap at O'Briens

A- nice deep brown to black with a creamy eggshell white head from the nitro that retains very well.

S- mildly roasted grains is the predominant aroma here.

T- Not huge flavor but a nice combo of chocolate and roast I feel. Doesn't finish too sweet, nor should it.

M- This was the big disappointment. Very thin mouthfeel. Watery. Needs to be more velvety.

D- Not horrible, not great. If they can tweek it to make it feel a little more rich in body then this'll become a really good stout.

On tap at the Ballast Point Old Grove Brewery on 3/19/09. Served via nitro-tap into a pint glass.

Pours a deep brown/black (some ruby hues shine through around the bottom and edges) with 1 1/2 fingers of rigid creamy tan colored head. Retains with a 1/2 finger that stays full and rich, just drenching the sides of the glass with massive lacing. The aroma is rich with roasted malts and coffee, along with some chocolate and caramel character. I'm maybe also getting some lactic sweet notes mixed in there as well.

The taste is similar to the aroma, with bitter roasted oats and coffee mixing with chocolate and caramel and just a touch of dark fruit as well. It all melds nicely into a smooth flowing silky profile. Finishes with a ton of leftover sweetness and light roast. The mouthfeel is lighter feeling on the palate, but most of that probably has to do with the nitro. Very smooth in the mouth, overall maybe this could use just a bit more beef to match up with the more lively nature of the taste.

Pretty solid Stout and quite robust in the taste profile at times. I wish that the body had a touch more depth to it but overall this drank like a champ on nitro!

Served from nitro-tap into a sampler shaker. Poured black with a red hue around the edges with a minimal light tan head. Maintained phenomenal lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, roasted malt, milk chocolate, and very subtle coffee. The flavor was of sweet malt, roasted malt, dark chocolate, milk chocolate, and subtle sweet hop. It had a light feel on the palate with mild carbonation. Overall this was a pretty nice brew. It was very light and easy drinking. Not a whole lot of robust anything going on in this one, but the flavors were quite complex for a nitro-tap brew. Really glad I got to try this one and suggest you do as well at least once.

Draft at Duckworths. Very dark brown, layer of light tan.

Aroma, mostly chocolates and some roast malt.

Taste, oat more apparent here. Chocolate milkshake, some cocoa and roast malt. Faintest coffee.

Very nice creamy body. About in the middle. Drinks Extreamely easy. This is probably the best feature.
Pretty solid.

Nitro tap at Sessions Public for Sculpin Night (reg, cask, habanero and nitro)

A - Nice deep black like an Irish stout. Idiot tender poured it straight with no pause so there wasn't the level of head I'd expect from nitro. Still had some.

S - Wonderful roast, coffee notes that I wasn't expecting. Some breadiness but little to no yeastiness.

T - The roasty, coffee flavours really came thru. I've had this in taster from at HMB but this was WAY diff in a full pour. Complex malt bill kept it interesting the whole way.

M - Creamy goodness thanks to the nitro and the oatmeal. Somewhat thin in body like an Irish stout but much more body then Guinness.

D - While I wouldn't have them throughout the night this is a great beer to have one or two.

Cask at d.b.a., Brooklyn, NY

A: The beer is essentially jet black in color—only hints of brown are visible near the edges of the glass. It poured with a thin white head that slowly died down.
S: There are aromas of roasted malts in the nose along with some notes of coffee beans.
T: The taste is very similar to the smell and also has flavors of roasted malts and coffee.
M: It feels medium- to full-bodied on the palate and is very smooth with a light amount of carbonation.
O: The beer is very flavorful, although I’m not sure if I could drink more than one of these in a sitting.

Had a pint at the Ballast Point Old Grove location on 1/21/10

A - Dark brown (almost black) w/ finger width of head. It has a creamy look to it (first time I described that). Modest lacing on the glass.

S - Lots of grains and a little bit of oats mixed with a touch of roast. Nothing else really going on here.

T - Along the lines of guiness, but a bit better. No other real way to describe it. Perhaps it was too cold when served, and I didn't let it warm up enough for the tastes to really start coming through.

M - Creamy! Nitro does it again. Good amount of carbonation.

D - Can definitely drink more, but not a whole lot of taste going on. Easy to drink, 5% stout though.

Aromas are mild but pleasant notes of coffee and thick chewy oatmeal. Taste exactly follows the nose with mild java and grainy oats. Mouthfeel is full and delicious; exactly what I want in an oatmeal stout. Mellow yet enjoyable subtle finish. Ratings should be much higher for this beer. Not the greatest but very good.

On tap at the Hulmeville. Pours opague black with a nice inch light brown creamy heading that only a beer on nitro can give. Kept about a half inch head until the last gulp. Nothing to fancy with this beer. Some coffee bean aroma's with a touch of chocolate malt.Some powdery lactic grittiness left in the mouth in the finish. Not bad but nothing earth shattering.

Reviewed from notes taken last week in San Diego.

A-Pours a coffee black with some brown on the edges. Small light mocha head brown with decent retention. Spotty lace after a creamy thick nitro cascade up to the top of the glass on pouring.

S- Nitro seems to not release aroma as much for me. Cocoa powder and toasted oats with some black roasty malts.

T- More going on here as flavors release nicely, cocoa powder desserts and a fresh bowl of oatmeal. Roast cracked mash grains, toffee, caramel and some dark fruits, milky sweet and espresso hints.

S- Silky nitrogenated body with the obvious lack of carbonation bite, smoother. Finishes with a slight roasted bitterness.

Solid unsweetened cocoa powder forward and nice oat feel. Roasty grains with some fruit. Nitro doesn't really enhance it all that much for me.

Had on nitro-tap at the Homebrewmart location.

A: Color is a deeeep dark blackish brown with some lighter garnet hues around the edges. Crazy cascading action from the nitro. Nice lush and smooth mocha-like foam head with little to no bubbles or lace.

S: Smells of faint roasted coffee beans.

T: Nice toasted oat and roasted grains flavor with a slight tartness on the finish.

M: Super smooth and creamy texture on the palate. Very nice and light in body. Mouthfeel is probably the highlight.

D: Nice sessionability with this stout and the lower ABV's. Good roasty flavor packed into a lighter bodied ale. Not too shabby.

I think this is a good drinking stout but it could use something a little extra for me. Raising the ABV's a bit would actually help bring something a little more robust in my opinion. Definitely better experienced off of the nitro or even cask perhaps.

Consumed at Stone World Bistro, Escondido CA, 05/21/08.

Noted as 6.8% ABV on the menu.

Very dark brown with slightly lighter brown highlights. Creamy, one-finger tan head.

Aroma of dark roasted malt, chocolate and alcohol.

Flavor is somewhat light, texture is watery. Primarily dark roasted malt (maybe even burnt) with a significant bitter aftertaste more from hops than from the malt. I did not notice an oatmeal component to the flavor. A bit parching as well.

Not the revelation we all hope for when we hoist an unfamiliar beer.

Had at the Liberty Street Tavern in Allentown. On tap. I had had a pretty sh**y day and just told the waitress "I need a stout." and this is what she brought me. I'm happy with her decision.

Pour - I didn't pour it, so I don't know how it looked coming out but it showed up to me as black as black can be. The lighting in the place is average and upon inspection I saw that it wasn't dark ruby red, or just extremely brown and opaque. This beer is BLACK. Has a brown smooth head that reduces to a beautiful, ever-present walnut film.

Smell - an explosion of smells - coffee is most prominent, followed by toffee, chocolate and cooked butter. Has a generally sweet appearance, but give it a really strong sniff and youll get all sorts of thing in the nose.

Taste - a brazen foundation of grist smokiness, chocolate and coffee followed by a subtle hop bitterness. Notes of bergamot, lavender, butter and spices really accentuate the malt profile and provide and interesting and complex balance. Aftertaste is all fresh java.

Mouthfeel - extremely smooth. Sits very well on the palate and doesnt overstay its welcome. The carbonation is somewhat lacking, but thats to be expected from an oatmeal stout.

Drinkability - A substantial session stout. Would go great with grilled beef or pork and, of course, dessert. I had about five of them, so I'd say I'm a fan.

Dark brown where light shines through on the edges. Small but very thick head. Not much lace, though.

Black patent malt aroma--like coffee.

Burnt malt that is very much like straight coffee. Relatively thin bodied for the style. Long burnt toast aftertaste.

On Nitro at Linda Vista/Home Brew Mart

A: The beer pours pretty much black with a dense, creamy khaki head.

S: The nose starts off with the obligatory roasted malts along with a bit of dark chocolate and cocoa powder. There is a hint of licorice along with a mild coffee aroma. As with so many nitro beers, it's somewhat watery.

T: Pretty much the same story on the palate: roasted malt, toffee sweetness, dark chocolate, and mild coffee. There is just a touch of dark fruit character and a mild earthiness. The flavor is also watery.

M: Unfortunately, the feel is thin and watery with a smooth, low carbonation. I don't understand why you would ruin the typically excellent mouthfeel of an oatmeal stout by putting it on nitro.

O: Has potential, but I'd prefer to see it on draft rather than on nitro.
