(4.0) A: Pours a clear copper colour with an eggshell white foam head that’s quite bubbly. Good retention with spotty lacing.

(4.25) S: Tropical fruits (mainly pineapple and papaya), fair bit of citrus (mainly orange), piney bitterness, floral elements, and a pleasing buttery malt. Very good.

(4.25) T: Pine, citrus (orange and a bit of lemon), quite floral tasting, and just enough bready malt character to satisfy. Not able to pick out those tropical fruits detected in the aroma but they’re probably in there somewhere. Taste profile is well balanced and all the flavours work together well.

(4.25) M: Medium bodied with a moderate carbonation. Oily with some chewiness. Nice and dry with an equally enjoyable lingering bitter finish.

(4.25) D: This is probably a textbook AIPA in all categories. Tropical fruits alluded me in the flavour department but nonetheless still a great AIPA and one I would quickly pickup again.

Nice american IPA of a somewhat transparent orange color with some amber tones and an ok foam.
Smell is hoppy and extremely citric, with a lot of orange tones.
Taste is more complex. Really hoppy and citric; orange, grapefruit and specially (but not easy to distinguish) fig are the flavour highlights. Taste is also highly bitter. Maltiness is not hidden yet the beer seems too much juicy.
Body and carbonation are at good level but could be higher.
Alcohol is quite well balanced.

Appearance: Slightly hazy copper color with a thick, fluffy head that fades slowly with chunky lacing.

Aroma: Fresh hop, piney, some citrus with caramel malt underneath.

Taste: Good malt presence up front with some nutty notes, then lots of big, piney, fresh hop bitterness. Malt stays present all the way through in the background while the juicy hop bitterness leads. The fresh hop bitterness carries right on into the linger finish.

The Rest: Medium bodied, well carbonated and super tasty. This is an excellent west-coast IPA.

Poured from a bottle into a KC Pils glass from Boulevard Brewing Co., Kansas City, MO.

This beer came highly recommended from a local craft brew shop. I didn't even check the BA ratings before I purchased it. Wow, with ratings like this, it must be good!

... and it is. I can categorically say that this is one of the best IPAs I've ever tried. I am looking forward to trying all of the other beers from Ballast Point.

A: A thick, cloudy amber-gold with a deliciously thick and well-retained head. Wonderful lacing potential with some amount of settling on the top of the beer. Well carbonated when poured well.

S: Rich of hops and toasted malts covered with citrus, pine, pepper and a hint of what I think smells like peach. Wonderfully fragrant and rich.

T: A powerful punch of hops with a light malty goodness on top of big citrus flavors. Peach, orange, mango come to mind. Estimated IBU of about 70-75. Perfect sweet spot for an IPA. Crisp bite with a thick texture on top. To me this is a perfect IPA - hoppy with malts and some citrus and nothing overpowering. Well balanced tartness, sweetness and bitterness. Aftertaste is extremely mild and not unpleasant (big bonus). 7.0% ABV is hidden by the hops and abundant flavors. Wonderful beer.

M: Thick and rich but not overpowering. It has a good bite from the hops and carbonation. Easy to drink for a 7.0% ABV beer.

O: This is one lovely beer. It's on my top 5 IPAs and earned a lot of expect from me for Ballast Point brewery. If someone wanted me to suggest an IPA, I think this is the perfect blueprint of the type. It's not overpowering and too bitter like some heavy IPAs or doubles, the alcohol level is high but reasonable, the flavors mingle perfectly and it has a wonderful balance of carbonation, sweetness, bitterness and virtually no unpleasant aftertastes. Big big props to Ballast Point on this award winner.
