The Beers of California
Freshness Date: 9/28/12
A: Hazy golden orange with a finger of off white foam siting atop this spectacular looking brew. The head dissipates leaving behind patches of floating foam.
S: A beautiful melange of fruit aromas: pineapple, grapefruit, and mango. The fruit is balanced with a piney earthiness along with a faint spiciness.
T: The first flavors, released after a good vigorous pour, match the nose: pineapple, citrus including grapefruit and maybe even some hint of tangerine, and tropical flavors, mostly ripe yellow mango. The earthiness then comes through consisting of freshly cut grass, pine and also a strong herbalness. The beer finishes with a tangy spice which comes through more notably as the beer settles. Although the hops take the show, they are founded on a biscuity somewhat caramel sweet maltiness.
M: The hop oils coat the mouth allowing the hop flavors to linger and be fully appreciated. Medium carbonation and mouthfeel appropriate for an IPA.
O: As a proud California native, it is my goal to chronicle the many brews that have their roots in this great state that I love so dear. Where best to start but with this west coast IPA which has managed to separate itself from an already competitive class. A great single IPA which really showcases the depth of hop flavors. Somewhat pricey at $14.99 for a sixer at BevMo although well worth it given the quality of this brew. A world class single IPA.

Presentation: It was poured from a brown 12 oz bottle into a tulip glass. The label lists the abv at 7% abv.
Appearance: It has a clear golden body with lots of visible carbonation. The builds up tall and thick with a just off white head. This head quickly faded out on me making next to no lacing.
Smell: There is a bid hop presence here with loads of citrusy and piney hop notes.
Taste / Palate: The first few sips I mostly got loads of pine like and some citrusy grapefruit and lemon rind flavor notes. As I drank on and the beer warms more peach like fruit notes and maltiness comes out. The finish is all hop bitterness which lingers for some time. The body and carbonation feel spot on and I can see why Sculpin IPA is so highly rated.
Notes: Classic West coast IPA!!!
