22oz bottle poured into a Portsmouth goblet.

A - Pours a beautiful pale orange gold - crystal clear with a thick 1 finger white head. Head consists of very fine bubbles giving a whipped creamy appearance and lasts for quite a while. Leaves nice, sticky lacing down the sides of the glass.

S - The aroma is of fresh squeezed grapefruit juice. Smells magnificent. Only the slightest of bready malt aromas appear. This one screams citrus hops all the way, and in a good way.

T - Hmmm, mostly excellent flavor to this beer, but there is a flavor in here that I can't quite identify. Flavor is primarily fresh grapefruit, like the aroma. Quite bitter but with a tinge of sweetness on the side to round things out. Not much malt flavor in this. Now...for that other flavor. It reminds me of Peach flavored Jelly Belly jelly beans - which quite honestly don't taste very "peachy" to me. In fact, I can only describe them as tasting "sweaty". By this, I don't mean literally, as in salty. They taste like sweaty armpits smell - not very appealling. I've noticed this in other beers, but none so much as in Sculpin - especially when very fresh. Usually, when I mention this, people look at me funny, but when they try a jelly bean they start to understand. I sat on this bottle for about a month to see if this would go away...and it did to a large extent, but is still present. Still quite a good, flavorful IPA, I just can't get entirely past this nuance. Keeps it from being truly exceptional for me.

M - Mouthfeel is very smooth. Carbonation is made of tiny, prickly bubbles. Body is medium. Bitterness lingers well into the aftertaste.

D - This is a very rich and flavorful beer. Goes down fairly smooth...especially for a 7% beer. Alcohol really doesn't play a factor here from a feel standpoint, but might catch up with me if I had a couple. The odd, off flavor reduces the overall drinkability for me, but still not bad - not quite sessionable though.

Nice american IPA of a somewhat transparent orange color with some amber tones and an ok foam.
Smell is hoppy and extremely citric, with a lot of orange tones.
Taste is more complex. Really hoppy and citric; orange, grapefruit and specially (but not easy to distinguish) fig are the flavour highlights. Taste is also highly bitter. Maltiness is not hidden yet the beer seems too much juicy.
Body and carbonation are at good level but could be higher.
Alcohol is quite well balanced.

Appearance: Slightly hazy copper color with a thick, fluffy head that fades slowly with chunky lacing.

Aroma: Fresh hop, piney, some citrus with caramel malt underneath.

Taste: Good malt presence up front with some nutty notes, then lots of big, piney, fresh hop bitterness. Malt stays present all the way through in the background while the juicy hop bitterness leads. The fresh hop bitterness carries right on into the linger finish.

The Rest: Medium bodied, well carbonated and super tasty. This is an excellent west-coast IPA.
