I have had many, many Sculpins. On tap, cans and bottles. I usually love it and considered it one of the better CA IPA's that are widely available. However, I recently picked up a fresh Sculpin bottle (new label, 13252 date) after going all cans for the past several months. I have to say, this is disappointing. Its totally different then the cans in aroma, taste and mouthfeel.
A: light orange/pale/good head. Nothing wrong here
S: Some spicy/resin/pine with a good amount of bready malt. I would guess that they stopped dry hopping this as much as they used to. Its very different.
T: more bitter than usual, less hop fruit and more hop "spice" (makes me think too much Nelson hops?) and more bready malt then I used to experience with Sculpin. The bitter/spice/bread is not what I want in a fresh, hop forward, CA IPA.
M: The mouth-feel is medium. Kind of a harsh/sharp/over carbonation.

Presentation: It was poured from a brown 12 oz bottle into a tulip glass. The label lists the abv at 7% abv.
Appearance: It has a clear golden body with lots of visible carbonation. The builds up tall and thick with a just off white head. This head quickly faded out on me making next to no lacing.
Smell: There is a bid hop presence here with loads of citrusy and piney hop notes.
Taste / Palate: The first few sips I mostly got loads of pine like and some citrusy grapefruit and lemon rind flavor notes. As I drank on and the beer warms more peach like fruit notes and maltiness comes out. The finish is all hop bitterness which lingers for some time. The body and carbonation feel spot on and I can see why Sculpin IPA is so highly rated.
Notes: Classic West coast IPA!!!
