This is a really wonderful IPA. Love at first sip.
Served out of the 22 oz. bottle into my Stone Old Guardian Barley Wine specialty goblet.
Cloudy orangish, golden color. A nice micro-bubbly head sizzles to the surface. I love beers like this where the head seems to come from within. Some beers you pour and if you poured heavily enough you'd have a glass full of foam. But beers like Sculpin have this head that literally bubbles up from the liquid itself forming a respectable, though not billowing head. It sticks around and you get some great lacing all the way down the glass.
Smells absolutely wonderful. Fruit, citrus, pine resin. You can tell they put a variety of hops into this one to create this bouquet of wonder.
Taste is remarkable. Some of my favorite IPAs (or Imperial IPAs) have this tremendous quality of being hoppy as hell, but also super smooth, drinkable and light-bodied. It seems oxymoronic, but the bitterness of this one is rather pleasant. I love the piny quality of this one, along with a cornucopia of other fruity flavors from citrus to something subtropical or tropical like a mango or nectarine.
Real light-bodied and gentle. Just caresses your palette.
I am absolutely in love with this beer and want more of it. I hope Ballast keeps coming with this one.
