Nearly flawless appearance for an IPA. Big billowing white head with fantastic retention, lace-city, over an orange amber beer.

Smell is really nice. Citrus, oranges like marmalade, ripe peaches and mangos, a hint of green papaya, rounded out by a soft note of caramel and earth.

Taste opens with grapefruit pith bitterness, then distinct juicy tangerine-oranges finally plunging headlong into a pungent almost musky woody-citrus back end which is more noticeable as it warms a little. If I have to nitpick, the body seems a wee bit thinnish. Finish is clean and lightly bitter.

I finished one and am moving on to another just to verify what I've written here. Yep, it's pretty dang good.

Fresh Sculpin from Brawley's Beverage poured from the can into a glass.

Appearance: Pretty, dark orange colour with head retention expected from an IPA

Smell : Pick up on the lemon/grapefruit aroma subtlety, could be interpreted as mango

Taste: Like taking a bite out of a grapefruit. Fantastic rush of bittersweetness than lingers the perfect amount of time. Get some good lemon up front too.

Mouthfeel: A nice light body that helps to balance out the initial wave of hop bitterness.

Overall: I go through phases with IPA's and my go to was Founders Centennial (or lavery dulachan when available), but I have a new standby. This is one of the best Beers I have ever had, never mind an IPA. For a beer classified as an IPA this is a lesson and perfect example of artisan craftsmanship and deliberately imparting these flavours into a beer with the hops (Does anyone else feel a good amount of IPAs are just packed with hops without any rhyme or reason these days? Particularly double IPAs?) . Great work and if I wound up with another one of these in my lifetime, I'd call it KARMA!

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tall pint glass. No bottling date.

Appearance: Pours a bright and clear copper golden orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. About one finger of off white head which fades into a thin layer. Leaves a good amount of lacing around the glass.

Smell: A crisp and juicy tropical citrus hop driven aroma with a nice sweet malt backing. Big scent of ripe and juicy hops upfront. Citrus fruit hints of grapefruit, orange peel, mango, tangerine, apricot, passion fruit, lemon, melon, and peach. Herbal hints of spicy pine resin. Also some earthy hints of grass. Soft bready pale malt background with hints of sweet caramel, biscuit, yeast, grains, and cracker. A very good West Coast IPA aroma.

Taste: Like the smell hints at, a very juicy hop forward taste with a big citrus fruit presence and a soft malt backing. Big presence of ripe and juicy citrus hops upfront with notes of grapefruit, orange peel, mango, apricot, lemon, tangerine, melon, pineapple, and peach. Notes of herbal pine resin along with some earthy grassy hops. Sweet pale malt backing with notes of caramel, grains, biscuit, cracker, and yeast. Very juicy and citrus forward but still nicely balanced with the bitterness. A very good taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Very juicy and fairly oily. Bitter but still fairly smooth. Finishes dry.

Overall: A really great West Coast style IPA. Great citrus hop flavors. Bold and bitter but balanced and far from overwhelming. Great to have these guys in Minnesota now.
