One of my all time favs. Best buy date 1/05/13 (about 5 months old. I know what it tastes like fresh, but its still amazing this old) 12 oz. bottle poured into a Duvel tulip.
Appearance: Pours a luscious orange with peach highlights. An off white, finger tall head forms. Plenty of sticky lace as the head slowly recedes. Awesome looking brew.
Aroma: Holy hell, one of the best, if not the best smelling IPA I've ever had in my life; Huge ripe peach with fresh lemon zest! (Gotta love that amarillo hop) Loads of bright clementine tangerine as well. Some faint dank piney notes lay under the hugely tropical nose. A nice and light cracker scent underneath it all if you look for it.
Taste: WHAM! Straight tropical fruit to the palate! Mango, passion fruit, papaya; you name it! The usual citrus menagerie shortly follows; grapefruit, light lemon, a big tangerine presence. Absolutely bursting with complex flavors. A bracingly dry finish. So dry in fact, it reminds me of Duvel. A flash of cracker forms on your tongue before the truly glorious bitter finish. Man, the bitterness sustains for years! Amazing.
Mouthfeel: Juicy and sticky, yet really light and refreshing. Moderate to high carbonation.
Overall: I've had this beer many times and yet I'm always taken aback by how incredible this beer is; I've never had another brew like it. Drinking this liquid work of art is akin to taking a bite out of some crazy hybrid tropical fruit. Any IPA lover... hell, any BEER lover needs to seek out this beer at any or all cost. Truly magical.

4.1/5 rDev -7%
look: 5 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 4
Appearance: pours a dense head (~3 fingers) with a nice translucent amber color.
Aroma: Big citrus and grapefruit upfront. Also lemon, pine, and an underlying crystal malt.
Flavor: Sweet, caramel malt at the front followed by a blast of American hop flavor. A complex mix of hop bitterness takes over (mostly grapefruit and pine).
Mouthfeel: The only part about this beer I didn't really enjoy. Sculpin was a tad resiny and VERY dry for the style. Some residual sugar here from malt would go a long way.
Overall: A very solid west coast IPA. Not the best, imho, but quite a treat. A more balanced mouthfeel would make this beer truly great.

On tap a Smoke & Barrel
Beer pours a clear yellow-orange with a thin white head. Aroma is great, a big blast of citrus hops is prominent here. Flavor follows the nose - it's awesomely citrusy and juicy with a nice bitterness and a only minor malt character. Very light and easy to drink. It's medium-bodied with nice carbonation. Overall, this is an awesome IPA that's packed with the flavor of a DIPA but with a lower ABV that makes it dangerously drinkable. I'm so happy that Ballast Point now distributes to DC as this may very well replace Bell's Two Hearted as my go-to IPA.
