The big, bad Sculpin. Hoping it's not spoiled based on the place of purchase. Why do I continue to buy beer from there?

A: Clear, golden-yellow with a massive, white head. Fluffy, pillowy goodness that leaves behind a ton of lace with little head retention.

S: Huge floral and fruit aromas. Not overly hoppy and dry, which is great, but enough to remind you it's an IPA. Balanced nose.

T: So damn smooth and balanced. Fruity hops dominate with enough malt in the finish to keep the hops in check. Slightly bitter but it's really just juicy, refreshing hops. Every sip begs for another. Incredible flavor and quality. While IPA's can be overrated as a style and overdone, this beer reminds you that it's one of the best styles of beer for a reason.

M: Balance. That's all I can say. Perfect bitterness. Thirst-quenching. Fresh in San Diego? Please.

O: Everything I expected. Amazing stuff as it warms. Had the opportunity to try it on-tap in downtown San Diego a few months ago and cannot wait to drink it again. It deserves to be the #1 IPA at the moment.

Sculpin India Pale Ale by Ballast Point Brewing Company is an average example of the style. I found that like many IPAs, the pine flavor was overwhelming. I don't find skunky, bitter, and unbalanced beer all that appealing. On a positive note, it was a gorgeous amber color. I liken it to a hot blonde with bad breath.

12 oz. bottle. Here's hoping this one wasn't chilling on the shelf too long!

This is a good looking IPA. Really impressive finger and a half of head, fluffy eggshell. Amber body with lots of tiny bubbles. Impressive lacing, almost looks like a mineral formation on the side of the glass.

The smell is great, and manages to be unique, thanks to a fresh, almost minty aroma. Plenty of piney hops, and what seems to be a sturdy malt background.

The taste definitely carries over the mintyness from the smell, while also delivering on the hop bitterness from front to back. The well carbonated mouthfeel matches up with a dry (but not too dry) finish.

This is a really good IPA... if only the price didn't make my wallet cry. Oh well.

Thanks to corregidore for this tasty extra! The last time I had a Sculpin, they didn't print dates on the labels but it tasted way past its prime. I'm stoked to finally get the chance to try it fresh. This one is marked ENJOY BY 10/27/12. Dope. Poured from bomber to pint:

Pours a clear gold with minimal beading and a half finger of white head that retains rather well. Good lacing.

Great on the nose - mango is the first thing that comes to mind. It's definitely got that bright fruit character but more geared towards tropical, non-citrus. Smells delicious.

Super smooth. More of that sweet fruit surfaces. This beer beautifully demonstrates the versatility of the hop flower. Very tropical with virtually no perceived bitterness. Tasty.

Thanks for the delicious beer, Ryan!

Had on Tap at Kickbacks Gastropub in Jax.
A: Light yellow see through body, like most IPA’s.
S: Pine, Hops, some citrus, smells great.
T: Hoppy and very flavorful. There’s no water here, just a lot of flavor and some malt. Lots of amazing flavor packed into this one.
M: More of the taste coats the mouth here.
O: Great flavor for an IPA. This is a great beer I wish you could get it in MA without worrying about how long the bombers have been sitting on the shelves looking at light.
