Poured on tap in a 5 oz tulip glass at Haven Gastropub. Reviewed from notes. Expectations very high.

A- Thick fluffy white head. Light orange coloration. Extremely well carbonated. Sticky, fluffy lacing.

S- Very hoppy and light fruits. Light but strong smell. Nice.

T- Crisp, dry hops. Very flavorful. Wonderful dry bitter flavor.

M- Medium bodied, well carbonated.

O- Best IPA I've ever had.

Orange colored Indian Pale Ale with a soapy head with wonderful lacing. Overall the hop profile was good, the beer was almost oddly smooth for 7% abv, with a fantastic lingering mildly bitter hop finish. Overall, a solid and smooth IPA definitely worthy of a try but did not really live up to the hype in my opinion.

Note: This review was a re-post from my former account, jmkratt, which was hacked and I lost all my reviews...sorry for the redundancy.
Received this in a trade from Heymanivxx - thank you!

Poured from bomber to pint glass.

A - The beer pours with a slight hazy gold color with a 2 finger creamy white bubbly head with nice lacing and retention.

S - Great tropical hints up front: pineapple, passion fruit, orange, and apples. There is not much malt aroma but it's a nice smell for sure.

T/M - After the aroma I expected a sweet fruity flavor, I didn't get much of that. It starts crisp on the tongue. Quickly transitions to a subdued flavor I got in the aroma and meets a medium bitterness with a nice sweet malt character for a nice balance. The beer ends slightly sweet with a mild bitterness and incredibly smooth. Good carbonation and light to medium mouthfeel.

D - Yes

Overall, I was pleased with this beer and I'd highly recommend it. I don't know how fresh this sample was bit it tasted great and I wish I had another.

Color is light amber to orange, with a huge soapy head that lasts and lasts. Lots of lacing on the glass too - this one's a beauty. The smell is other-worldly, with citrus hop scents assaulting the senses - mango, pineapple, and orange. Huge hop flavors continue into the taste as well. Delicious grapefruit bitterness builds through a crescendo that peaks with a tangy bite in the finish. Hop oils coat the tongue, and put a smile on my face. Perfect carbonation. If you love beer with a big citrus hop taste like me, you must try this one. It's one of the best. I don't see anything that can be improved.

Re-reviewing the Sculpin IPA from Ballast Point Brewing Company out of California now that I got ahold of a fresh bottle. How do I know this bottle is fresh? It came straight from the brewery! After two negative experiences with out-of-date bottles, I got in touch with Earl Kight )the director sales and marketing at Ballast Point) and he was nice enough to not only send me fresh replacement bottles of Sculpin and Big Eye IPA, but also an unexpected bottle of their Victory At Sea Coffee Vanilla Imperial Porter -- a beer I have been dying to try for quite some time! Thanks Earl. This review is for you.
Score: 93

Bottle code "SC1210612." This bottle was shipped directly from the brewery and it arrived at my door 02/14/12. Served in a Surly Darkness snifter and enjoyed 02/14/12.

Appearance: Pours a "bright" orange-yellow color that is slightly closer to translucent than transparent with a finger and a half of soapy white head that settles into a thin film atop the glass and ring around the glass. Above average amounts of lacing cling to the sides of the glass. 4.5/5

Smell: Strong doses of fresh piney hops and "bright" citrus aromas. Lemons, grapefruit and pineapple. Sweet orange juice/pineapple juice backbone. Subtle amounts of dank resin mixed with a like amount of "fresh grass clippings" aroma. Quite the pleasant contrast to the hopless orange malt aroma of the stale Sculpin I had. 4/5

Taste: Strongly bitter and piney hops upfront, mellowed out by smooth, slightly sweet citrus on the back end. Midpalate is loaded with citrus flavors -- tangerine, lemon, grapefruit and come to mind here. A sweet and juicy citrus malt backbone really balances out the bitterness. Detecting a subtle hint of hefeweizen-like yeastiness on the midpalate too. Finishes with a smooth bitterness. Surprisingly bold flavors and a good amount of hoppiness for a single IPA. 4.5/5

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, medium carbonation. Slightly oily mouthfeel. Incredibly drinkable and refreshing. Smooth, slightly bitter finish with a mild drying effect. 4/5

Overall: Now that I have had this one fresh, I can see what all the hype is about. The flavors are pretty bold for a single IPA. Quite refreshing and drinkable. This would certainly be a go to beer for me if it was readily available in Wisconsin or Illinois. Thank you again Earl for giving me the opportunity to have this one as fresh as possible.

Recommendation: For a single IPA this one is a bit hoppy, so hop haters and casual beer drinkers should consider themselves forewarned. Everyone else needs to seek out a fresh bottle of this stuff.

Pairings: Hamburgers.

Cost: $8.99 for a 22 oz (bomber) bottle.

22 oz bomber poured into my new Belgium chalice. scored the bottle at Carrboro Beverage Company

appears golden amber orange. nice 1.5 finger white/off-white foamy head. lacing is just so-so

sweet mango, pineapple /cantaloupe scents. definitely west coast hop aromas. smells really good

taste is fantastic. tropical fruits, IPA-bitterness, slight malty caramel flavors

mouthfeel... leaves the palate very dry, but certainly wanting more. carbonation seems about right

overall pretty darn good IPA. maybe a bit steep for 10 bones a bomber, but good stuff regardless. been wanting to try this for awhile now, and it finally hit the shelves here in NC. great west-coast style IPA. would like to try on draught sometime
