Our Victory at Sea Imperial Porter is a bold, smooth brew with just the right amount of sweetness. We infused this robust porter with whole vanilla beans and San Diego’s own Caffe Calabria coffee beans. The subtle roasted notes and minimal acidity of the cold brewed coffee, balances perfectly with the sweet caramel undertones of the malt, creating a winning combination for your palate.

Appearance: It has a nice practically jet black color to it. It has a nice dark tan head that dies down moderately fast and leaves some lacing.

Smell: Wow, the aromas definitely give out hints of sweet roasted malts, lots of dark chocolate, coffee/espresso, vanilla and caramel.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has a some sweet roasted malts, coffee/espresso, dark chocolate, vanilla, toffee and caramel.

Mouthfeel: It has a medium carbonation with a great overall balance and feel.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied with great flavors and aromas.

The awaited review of VaS. Finally able to locate 2 bombers and have been waiting to crack this for quite some time. Poured from bomber into DFH snifter. Beautiful motor oil black pour with a bit of light making it through. Nice 2 finger mocca head, with excellent retention and great lacing throughout. Smell was spectacular. Vanilla with chocolate and coffee. Some burnt fruits notes and dark malts. Complex and inviting. Couldn't stop smelling it! Taste followed the nose with huge coffee on the front that fades to subtle bitter and vanilla finish. A great blend that is almost perfect. Hides the 10% well, but a definite sipper. Feel is very strong. Full bodied and great carbonation. Creamy and smooth. Overall- One of the best beers I have ever had. A great blend of coffee, dark fruits, hops and a touch of vanilla. Smell is outstanding and mouthfeel is spectacular. Top notch effort from Ballast Point. In my top 10 for sure-

Huge thanks to dgb3 for a brew I have been wanting to try for quite some time. 22 oz. bomber poured into my Stone RIS tulip.

A: Deep, dark, brown color, just a touch of light around the edge. The pour creates a big two finger fluffy, mocha head that retains well and leaves tons of thick lace.

A: I get the coffee and espresso notes before I even pour it into the glass. These aromas just burst out of the bottle. The roasted coffee is very prominate, and I get a good dose of the vanilla as well.

T: Man this might be the most coffee forward beer I have ever had. Great espresso roastiness and chocolate are the dominate flavors, but the vanilla most definately makes an appearance on the back end. The brew finishes very dry with almost no hint of the alcohol.

M: Heavy body, creamy, and velvety smooth. The carbonation delivers the flavors nicely.

D and overall impression: Drinkability is dangerously high with this one. Overall, I really dig coffee forward beers, and this one might be the best I have ever had. I loved this beer from the moment I opened it. As far as American Porters go, I have yet to find one better. Outstading! Must try! Skal.

A - Pours a very dark brown with a finger of frothy chocolate colored head. The head fades down fairly slowly leaving behind some nice lacing.

S - Aroma is full of roasted chocolate and coffee with some dark fruits, vanilla, and a bit of booze.

T - Starts off with some roasted dark chocolate and coffee beans with some vanilla, raisin, and other dark fruits. Through the middle, some more roasted and lightly bitter coffee comes through with some stronger vanilla. The finish is a mix of roasted bittersweet chocolate with some coffee, vanilla, dark fruits, and booze.

M - Medium-full bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth with a roasted, dry, and warming finish.

D - Very drinkable. Bold but perfectly balanced. The coffee, chocolate, and vanilla flavors go very well together.

A: Deep black, very little light coming through. One finger mocha colored head, a little thick looking for a porter.

S: Got the coffee upfront, mostly. Really roasty, malty characteristics, vanilla is pretty small on the nose.

T: A lot more vanilla then on the nose, got a lot of coffee, kind of a roasted espresso flavor. Got some caramel type flavors in there as well.

M: Thick, medium carbonation. A bit dry as well.

Overall I like this one a lot. I would love to get some more bottles if it was more readily available. One of the best porters out there.

Note: This review was a re-post from my former account, jmkratt, which was hacked and I lost all my reviews...sorry for the redundancy.

Got this in a trade from Heymanivxx - thanks man! Great label too, I love it.

Poured from bottle to pint glass.

A - The beer pours jet black with huge 3 finger dark tan/brown head with great retention and gobs of lacing.

S - Nice aroma of vanilla beans with roasted malt character: coffee, chocolate, almost creamy on the nose.

T/M - A nice vanilla flavor right up front which quickly is joined with a nice coffee/chocolate flavor. The middle is so creamy it's like a milk chocolate shake! Mild bitterness with a huge creamy mouthfeel. The beer ends with a nice coffee roast on the palate that lasts forever. Full bodied and delicious.

D - The beer is strong but hides it's strength well. Very drinkable.

Overall, this is an outstanding beer. I was really impressed and an thankful for the hook up. Highly recommended!

Pours light black in color with a raspberry red hue and a caramel kissed frothy head of foam, much like a cup of espresso.

Coffee, cream, vanilla, roasted nuts, and mocha.

Velvety smooth coffee, vanilla, and chocolate present a creamed coffee aspect that I have not seen replicated.

Mouthfeel is masterfully smooth, a perfect balanced of coffee and vanilla/cream.

Overall, this is definitely worth seeking out.

She pours a pitch black, reminiscent 'o dark nights on a foamin' mad sea. thar's no woe fer them seekin' th' light here.

Vanilla bean, cream 'n cocoa greet th' nose. As it warms up, th' flavors increase in intensity. Mmm.

Vanilla compliments th' cocoa 'n coffee notes apparent here.

Despite bein' a baltic porter, it beats out a few imperial stouts bin had latel. extra spit shine finish. Lin'erin' vanilla, cream 'n cocoa flavors. It rivals Stone's Vanilla Porter in strength 'n despite th' fact that it has more alcohol, it never hits ye over th' head wit' it.

Easily one 'o me favorite baltic porters. th' use 'o vanilla adds to th' complexity.

What a great beer by Ballast Point. Poured from a bottle into a DC Brau snifter. Black pour with a thick mocha head that recedes quickly. Good lacing on the glass as this ine goes down. Strong coffee smell, something I'm growing to absolutely love. 10% masked very well on this one. Once again, what a great beer, so very thankful Ballast Point finally made its presence in Texas. Will buy this one over and over again despite the $9.99 price tag per 22

Poured into a Darkness tulip on 6/10/11.

Poured like a can of oil leaving a frothy brown head that dissipates leaving a moderate to heavy lacing. Great color and nice head retention and lacing.

Smells of tons of coffee and vanilla and a bit of roasted malts. This is a great smelling brew I just want to put my nose in it.

Taste is a mocha blend coffee at first and then the coffee flavor gives over to the vanilla shortly after. Tastes like a chocolate cake as it warms, very delicious.

Mouthfeel is moderate in weight. Almost no bite at all and the 10% ABV is unnoticeable. Resin coats the mouth and I continue to taste chocolate cake.

Overall this is one hell of a porter. Perfect balance of coffee and vanilla, and a total lack of ETOH burn is just awesome. This beer is awesome, go get it.

10% ABV

A - As pitch black as the depths of the sea itself, this dark imperial porter has a frothy mocha head that churns upward lapping rocky splashes of lace on the glass as it slowly sinks.

S - At first Victory At Sea's aromatics present nothing more than cold-pressed oily, loosely ground espresso bean. As the dark beer warms, roasted malt incorporates dark chocolaty nuances with the rising tide of vanilla bean and subtle sweet caramel on the finish.

T - Heavily roasted malt unveils dark bitter baker's chocolate with undertones of molasses and dried vanilla bean before launching right back into the robust cold-pressed espresso flavor. While it's damn delicious, it's not quite as impressive at the aroma lets on.

M - Starting with a robust feel, Victory At Sea quickly shifts to a thinner feeling presence due to it's heavily roasted malt and coffee acrid bitterness that's further thinned by warming alcohol on the finish.

O - An iconic beer from it's harrowing label to the sheer robust presence of the coffee, Victory At Sea is a classic coffee beer for any coffee lover, gliding smoothly across the palate with black espresso, vanilla tannins, and bitter chocolate lapping at the bow as warming alcohol fuels it's sails. If you want to totally geek out, enjoy this while watching a 'Pirates' movie.

Hello! TRIA Rittenhouse has this on tap. Great pour with 1/2 inch head in the tall stem tulip glass. Quick swirl and the head reappears. Close your eyes and remember when your Grandma put an extra drop or two of vanilla in whatever she was baking. That is this porter. I love you, Grandma.

Pours a deep brown with a minimal tan head that fades into non-existence.

Vanilla dominates the palate, but a bit of coffee and roasted malts stick as well.

Starts off with rich roasted chocolate notes and a bit of coffee. Vanilla peaks in a bit, but is very subdued compared to the nose. There's a roasty bitterness throughout and a vanilla sweetness in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel is medium-high becoming better as it warmed. Medium-Low carbonation.

Very tasty beer. This one's been on my radar for while and it lived up to expectations. Good complexity throughout the flavor profile with a very solid mouthfeel.

A - It is black as night with an inch or two of mocha head.

S - I get a snoot full of coffee. It basically smells like iced coffee.

T - It starts out with vanilla. Then the taste is rich, flavorful, fresh roasted coffee. It don't get no better!

M - Full, smooth, and creamy.

O - This is just an awesome beer. I love it. The only way I could improve it would be to have it on tap on nitro again. That is perfection.

Bomber.

Smell: wow. Vanilla, oily coffee bean, caramel,

Taste: wow. Follows with lots of rich fresh coffee bean and vanilla bean. A little caramel and some earthy/citrusy hops. Cocoa, a touch of cola, and finishes with some coffee and hop bitterness. Almost a subdued peach note from the hops under the layering of robust roasty coffee flavors. A real nice hop bite throughout underneath the fantastic coffee/vanilla.

Mouthfeel: thick, lightly syrupy with some carbonation and bite, very nice. A nice sipper but not a meal. Lighter than an imperial stout.

Overall: this is a phenomenal beer. Gotta have it.

Great beer! Pours dark with a tan head. Smells like roasted coffee with a little bit of sweetness. This beer has all of the great taste of coffee without too much bitterness. You can taste that it has been roasted well. Coffee is up front but you can catch the vanilla too. Well balanced. Not overly watered down like lots of porters. Damn good beer.
