Perfect looks; thick and solid black with a dark mocha head that lasts and lasts. Smell is dominated by sweet bourbon vanilla notes and coffee with loads of cream, touch of herbal hops. Taste is lots of mildly sweet, black roasted malts. Lots going on; coffee, vanilla, bourbon, slight hops, cake batter, smoke/ash, lots more. Complex and warming, a very good imperial porter.

A- Dark brown..almost black with a two finger dark tan head. Sticky lacing remains on the glass.

S- Strong coffee, dark chocolate, vanilla, roasted malts. Slightly boozy.

T- Sweet espresso and dark chocolate. The vanilla is there but def. in the background. The strong coffee flavor dominates here, and thats fine. Alcohol burn is there but well masked.

M- Medium mouthfeel with average carbonation. Quite smooth. Somewhat bitter finish but nothing big.

O- Love it! Recommended. Gonna grab another bottle to age a bit.

A-Nice creamy, lumpy head and dark brown/black
S-Coffee, coffee, coffee
T-Coffee, coffee bitterness, roasted malt
M-medium bodied but creamy, too thin IMO for an "imperial porter" that is 10% ABV
O-Giving this a 4. I ordered 10 of these online and paid a premium to ship. Big disappointment considering the high rating. I love coffee stouts/porters, and wake n bake is probably my favorite. Other reviewers that I am normally on the same page with have this beer ranked almost a point higher than myself. The coffee bitterness/astringency overwhelmed all other notes that might be in this beer...but I guess i'll never know because they are overshadowed. Did I get a bad batch?

Really nice nose, but the praise really ends there for me. High bitterness for the style. Clashes with what would otherwise be a great coffee component. As it is, it unfortunately gets muddled a bit. The vanilla is pretty tough to find but is there. As always, the flavors came together a bit more as it warmed...but in the end, the high level of bitterness brought the taste and overall scores down. Certainly not a bad brew by any means, but there are better versions of this recipe out there.
