A: 4.25 Looks nice and viscous out of the bottle. Super dark brown, almost black with an off-white head that dissipates quickly.

S: 3.75 Roasted coffee and malt dominate the nose with strong vanilla coming right behind. Coffee smells pretty earthy (maybe I let this one go a bit too long; perhaps better fresh?).

T: 3.5 Bitter coffee and roasted malt. Vanilla sweetness is in the middle with more bitterness at the end.

M: 4.25 Really nice carbonation and pretty rich and thick. Well done here.

O: 3.75 Probably need to revisit this one fresh (or even age it longer to see if the bitterness of the coffee mellows out a bit). It’s pretty good, but fresh it might be more balanced and interesting.

10% ABV

A - As pitch black as the depths of the sea itself, this dark imperial porter has a frothy mocha head that churns upward lapping rocky splashes of lace on the glass as it slowly sinks.

S - At first Victory At Sea's aromatics present nothing more than cold-pressed oily, loosely ground espresso bean. As the dark beer warms, roasted malt incorporates dark chocolaty nuances with the rising tide of vanilla bean and subtle sweet caramel on the finish.

T - Heavily roasted malt unveils dark bitter baker's chocolate with undertones of molasses and dried vanilla bean before launching right back into the robust cold-pressed espresso flavor. While it's damn delicious, it's not quite as impressive at the aroma lets on.

M - Starting with a robust feel, Victory At Sea quickly shifts to a thinner feeling presence due to it's heavily roasted malt and coffee acrid bitterness that's further thinned by warming alcohol on the finish.

O - An iconic beer from it's harrowing label to the sheer robust presence of the coffee, Victory At Sea is a classic coffee beer for any coffee lover, gliding smoothly across the palate with black espresso, vanilla tannins, and bitter chocolate lapping at the bow as warming alcohol fuels it's sails. If you want to totally geek out, enjoy this while watching a 'Pirates' movie.

Black, opaque beer that features a small tan head. Very good lacing and a low level of retention.

Aromas have vanilla and wood, rich dark fruits, coffee, chocolates and dark cherry fruit.

The taste has dark chocolate, rich malts and brown breads, bitterness of roasted coffee and earth hops and vanilla. Also get some alcohol warming and perhaps some oxidation from the age.

Thick-bodied mouthfeel with low carbonation. The finish has a pretty intense coffee flavor and bitterness.

A very rich and coffee-forward beer that I enjoyed, but it did seem to have some off flavors that may be attributed to the age.
