Our Victory at Sea Imperial Porter is a bold, smooth brew with just the right amount of sweetness. We infused this robust porter with whole vanilla beans and San Diego’s own Caffe Calabria coffee beans. The subtle roasted notes and minimal acidity of the cold brewed coffee, balances perfectly with the sweet caramel undertones of the malt, creating a winning combination for your palate.

Opaque pour and attractive creamy khaki head, laced the tulip well.

Coffee forward aroma with a distinct chocolate syrup note, think espresso roast and Bosco comingling. The nose is bold and sweet at the same time.

The scorched coffee flavors are bold and quickly counteracted by the sweetness of the chocolate. Many have noted that the flavors seem artificial, and while I tend to agree with that sentiment, Victory At Sea appeals to me in a similar way a flavored Starbucks coffee might. Not getting much in the way of vanilla flavor, mostly scorched coffee and chocolate syrup going on here. Very easy drinking and the 10% abv is barely noticeable, which makes it dangerous now that it comes in 6 packs of 12 oz bottles.

Light medium mouthfeel, maybe even a tad thin for an Imperial Porter, creamy texture.

Very glad this is now packaged in 6 packs of 12 oz. bottles for $15 ( I was eyeballing the $10 bomber for 2 years). The ratings seem a bit hyped, but I must admit, Ballast Point certainly has created a good tasting Imperial Porter whatever shortcomings it may have. Victory At Sea is a terrific Winter warmer, and I definitely recommend trying it.

A: Motor oil body with a robust, ferrous-tan head that eventually settles into a light skim and thick halo.

S: Huge amounts of coffee dominate, with fresh overtones or herbaceous hops reluctantly allowing the eager caramel, vanilla, dark chocolate, and burned sugar to partake in the complex, and throroughly satisfying first impression.

T: Incredibly close approximation of the nose: espresso bean, caramel, toffee, and vanilla shine forth, as hops help cut through the thickness. Burned barley notes add a secondary layer of bitterness strengthening the coalition mounting against the luscious sweetness, and bring the whole brew into a realm of respectable complexity.

M: As thick as expected, although not quite reaching the levels of RIS' of similar alcoholic ilk. Low carb, slightly sticky, and velvety smooth.

O: a very solid coffee- focussed brew that shows excellent complexity, staunch balance, and pleasing length.

This beer poured out as a thick black looking brew. I was pretty surprised because I would have said this was a stout just by looking at it. The smell of the beer was roasted with a few faint notes of vanilla. The taste of the beer was full of coffee flavors with a subtle aftertaste of vanilla dryness. The mouthfeel is lighter than I thought it'd be judging by the look of the beer. Overall though, I think this beer is quite good. I would drink this one again if I happen to stumble upon it.
