A-Nice creamy, lumpy head and dark brown/black
S-Coffee, coffee, coffee
T-Coffee, coffee bitterness, roasted malt
M-medium bodied but creamy, too thin IMO for an "imperial porter" that is 10% ABV
O-Giving this a 4. I ordered 10 of these online and paid a premium to ship. Big disappointment considering the high rating. I love coffee stouts/porters, and wake n bake is probably my favorite. Other reviewers that I am normally on the same page with have this beer ranked almost a point higher than myself. The coffee bitterness/astringency overwhelmed all other notes that might be in this beer...but I guess i'll never know because they are overshadowed. Did I get a bad batch?

Really nice nose, but the praise really ends there for me. High bitterness for the style. Clashes with what would otherwise be a great coffee component. As it is, it unfortunately gets muddled a bit. The vanilla is pretty tough to find but is there. As always, the flavors came together a bit more as it warmed...but in the end, the high level of bitterness brought the taste and overall scores down. Certainly not a bad brew by any means, but there are better versions of this recipe out there.

Poured from a bomber into a tulip glass.

A: Black as pitch, only the slightest hint of color shining through in the shallowest areas. Two fingers of light mocha head, turning to tawny in the center. Mixture of large and small bubbles, forming a fluffy foam that lingers.

S: Heavily roasted malts, dark chocolate, dark coffee, some bitter chocolate aroma as well. Some light hints of vanilla on the nose, but very faint. When agitated almost a raisin-y scent comes through.

T: Vanilla up front, coffee, dark roasted malt and bitter chocolate linger to meet the hops that come late in the taste.

M: Smooth, full-bodied, lingering bitterness leaves a roughness on the tongue that begs for another sip.

O: Phenomenal Imperial Porter. There is no booziness to speak of, and the drinkability is off the charts. I need to go get another one of these ASAP.
