A: Pours like a stout, so I expect it to taste like one (or so I think). Pretty black and not too much head.

S: I can pick up some of that curry spice right away. I can also smell some of the booze and maybe some ginger or pepper.

T: WOW. This is crazy. Not what I was expecting at all. Curry, chili, fizz, pepper, smoke, wood, hops. It's not even that stout-like in my opinion. It's got faint notes of chocolate and sweets, but overall it's dry and spicy all the way. As it warms it gets better and becomes more subtle. Still the same notes in the taste but more blended and less harsh.

M: I think I'll go with medium and some good carb. Not the best, but not bad.

O: I didn't know what to think at first. This beer surly is interesting... I like it. I don't think it's an A beer, but I think it's good. One thing that disappointed me was the misleading style name. I expected more desert and less curry (although I'm a big fan of curry). It was still a good buy though.

Pours a very dark brown-black with a medium tannish-brown head that disappears slowly. Scent is heavy with coconut and a plethora of spices that make my nose tingle. A lot of chocolate and a little bit of lime. Taste is initially dark chocolate with just a bit of anise. I get a lot of coconut. Just a hint of curry with a ton of cayenne and cumin. The cayenne lingers on the throat and tongue with tingly spiciness. A bit of alcohol as well. As it warms...the curry comes through more. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, spicy, and tingly. Drinkability is fair. Overall, this is a unique beer, but all the spices can be a bit overwhelming. Tasty though.

22 oz bottle was poured into a large tulip glass.

Appearance: This beer poured a one finger mocha head that reduced to a thin layer. It is a pitch black color with no clarity or vision of bubbles coming up through the glass.

Smell: This totally smells like an Indian or Thai dish. Coconut, curry, cayenne pepper, and cumin. Smells great, but missing those traditional export stout flavors.

Taste: It's hard to hate this beer because I love the spices, but the spices make it easy to dislike it also. The heat of the spices overpowers any of the stout flavors.

Mouthfeel: Spicy hot, smooth, not as drinkable as one one like, lingering heat, medium bodied , and medium carbonation.

Overall: This beer is a love and hate relationship. I really don't know what to think. I love the beer by the way it tastes, but hate it by the way the taste I'm used to expecting. Where's the stout? Such a strange interesting beer.

Dark brown pour sits opaque black. Dense, clay colored head. Despite it's auspicious beginning, all foam is gone by the time I finish my beer.

Smells like curry and coconut shreds over a pretty good export stout.

Cocoa and chile with an odd citrus something in back at first (the kaffir lime leaves?). As the beer warms the cocoa simmers down and the vanilla-y coconut stands out more. Hot cayenne fade. Smooth mouthfeel like a baltic porter.

Good grocery list beer. Usually the adjuncts are overpowering and messy or too subtle to be worthwhile but this was a good mix.

A: Pours a dark brown with a big fizzy medium brown head. Fades somewhat quickly, leaving just a smattering of lacing behind. Zero head retention, can't even revive it with a swirl. Looks to be almost completely flat.

S: What a unique aroma. Toasted coconut is quite apparent. Lots of spices that I can't really place. A little bit of heat burns the noise (chile pepper?).

T: Heavy coconut up front. Some roasted malt with a touch of char and chocolate. Very spicy in the middle. Chile pepper heat, nice wave of it right after the middle and into the finish. More spices and more coconut mixes in with the burning. Long lingering simmering heat that adds up. Having said that, it's nothing over the top, just lasts forever. Swear I get a hint of lime in that lingering aftertaste as well.

M: Medium bodied but feels heavier due to very low carbonation. Smooth and creamy.

O: Definitely one of the most unique flavor combinations in a beer that I've ever had. Usually experiments like this fail miserably but this one turned out while well. Roasted malt tends to go well with chile pepper heat and the coconut brings a nice toasty aspect. Lots of spices everywhere that are hard to describe but contribute to the spicy/hot aspects of this beer. Nice balance of flavors to boot.

22 oz. bottle served in a tumbler glass. Pours a cola color with a fizzy, brown and almost instantly diminishing head. Aroma is roasted malt, cumin, curry, pepper, and chocolate. Flavor is roasted malt, curry, pepper, lime, vanilla, a hint of coconut, and chocolate. Mouthfeel is medium, dry, bitter, low carbonation, and mighty spicy. Very interesting beer, the aroma is slightly scary, but the malt background allows a bit of a balance with the spiciness.

Pours a dark brown color with a yellowish tan head that fades fairly quickly to a thick collar and a few streaks of lace. Heavy coconut and curry on the nose, and not much else, fairly sweet. Medium thick, high carbonation body, soft on the palate and very spicy on the finish. Flavor starts sweet and malty, milk chocolate and coconut before finishing with a variety of spices I can't identify that continue to build in heat on the back of the throat and front of the tongue long into the finish.

A: Pours an opaque yet clear very dark brown (approaching jet black) in color with some light to moderate amounts of visible carbonation and some cola brown highlights. The beer has a half finger tall dense foamy light tan head that reduces to a medium patch of very thin film with a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Light amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Light to moderate aromas of roasted malts underneath the light aromas of toasted coconut and Indian spices - cumin, curry, and kaffir leaves stand out.

T: Similar to the smell, there are light flavors of roasted malts underneath the more pronounced flavors of the Indian spices. There is a light presence of coconut with moderate to strong flavors of cumin and curry. Slightly light flavors of kaffir leaves and cayenne pepper. There is a moderate amount of lingering spicy burn.

M: Slightly heavier than light bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Light amounts of dryness from the spices in the finish.

O: There is a surprising amount of spiciness to this beer - probably a bit hotter than the average Indian food that I have ordered all over the US. There is a nice amount of kick to the spiciness but it does make the beer a little tougher to drink much of - definitely reduces the drinkability. Lots of complexity to the flavors and smells. Don't think I could have more than one of these.

On tap at O'Brien's. Pint glass.

Pours a near-black brown, thin light tan head with no lacing and not much retention. Smell is lots of curry spice, baker's chocolate, and bitter coffee. Taste is tamarind, turmeric, black pepper, and smoky malt. I'm not picking up any of the supposed coconut in the smell or taste (nor did anyone else in our group). Light bodied and medium-high carbonation, alcohol is not really noticeable. Overall, bonus points for the novel interpretation of the style. This was actually pretty drinkable despite the unusual flavor; although I didn't love it, it's not one of those beers that you can only drink a taste of. I'm intrigued as to the possibilities of food pairings with this.

- Ipa styled export stout brewed with Madras curry, cumin, cayenne, coconut, & kaffin lime.

A: Dark bakers chocolate pour produces a 2 finger mocha foam monster of a head. Good show of visible carbonation rushes up along the glass walls. Lace coating is modest 50% coverage rate, spotty.

S: The lime and coconut are first to get noticed with mention of cayenne and cumin. Fresh coconut, leafy greens, with the curry coming on the trail. Some celery stalk and a faint peppery mention. A nice mixture of asian spices, the chocolate and roasted nature a bit more reserved. Spicy, unique.

T: The asian spices come through strongly on the flavor aspect, no subtle hints here, distinct warming of cayenne and curry add that distinct spiciness and flair. Roasted coconut, cumin, fresh greenery, some coffee with a gentle warming of asian spice finish that provides just that right amount of balance, complexity and gentle warmth to the palate for a wintery night sampling.

M: Mouthful had a spicy cayenne sensation on the inner cheeks, as well the tongue. Body is medium full, some gentle dance of carbonation.

O: Overall I gave consideration for its uniquiness and what they were intending to do rather then shoe horn and punish this by style for a more focused attention on the spices then the roasted and coffee nature. An uniquely spiced export stout that highlights the asian induced spices with a very good balance and represenatation. A definite consideration for a one time sampling to try something outside the box.

On draft at Ballast Point in Little Italy.

The beer is black with a thin beige cap. The aroma brings chocolate, hot pepper, spice. Some dark chocolate with oranges and citrusy spice. Heat gains strength and intensity as I make my way through the beer. Cayenne pepper and spicy heat lingers amid dark chocolate. Not too heavy. This beer achieves its intended purpose, and for that, I will give credit. However, I don't see myself returning to this one, as I don't find pleasure in the combination of beer and spicy heat.

Pours jet black with a brown-ish head. In the aroma, curry, cayenne pepper, and small lime citrus. In the taste, lime, small curry, and notes of cayenne pepper spice. A small spice bite and a medium to lighter bodied mouthfeel, with a dry lime cayenne pepper, and curry notes in the aftertaste. Big lime, mellow curry and big spice in the end. Different, but enjoyable.

Poured from a bomber into a shaker pint, the beer is a dark, oily, jet black coloring with brown tints around the edges and no head whatsoever. Looks heavy and dense. Aromas of bittersweet baker's chocolate enveloped in curry spices. Very interesting blending on the nose. Flavors are curry forward, with both spice and heat, followed by a ribbon of chocolate and coffee, both bitter and sweet, and then the beer transitions back into the spice and heat of curry. The aftertaste is bitter and warming, and the warmth lingers throughout the finish and for quite a while after, as well. The finish is slick and smooth. This is a very unique take on an Export stout. I am very intrigued by it, and it would make for some interesting food pairings, because it seems like it can easily overpower.

A: The beer is very dark red (near black) in color. It poured with a thin tan head that faded away and left a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: There are light to moderate aromas of toasted coconuts in the nose along with notes of spices.
T: The initial taste has flavors of coconuts, but these are quickly followed by an interesting mix of spicy flavors—cumin seems to stand out in particular and cayenne pepper loners through the finish. The spices are strong but not overdone.
M: It feels light-bodied and a little airy on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation. The spices make the finish a little dry.
O: This beer is quite unique and is quite spicy. It's not the easiest beer to drink but is probably as drinkable as you could get for a spiced beer.

Pours dark brown with just some fizzy bubbles rising. Looks like a glass of Pepsi.

Holy shit what a nose on this. Lime, coconut, curry are big big aromas. Some charred malt in there somewhere.

Odd spiced brew. I only truly got all the flavors by reviewing it. The choice of stout works as a vehicle to carry the rest of the flavors. Curry, lime, and essence of coconut. Then, huge cayenne burn, with a good charred malt bitter push. The spices and essence flavors move aside, and the cayenne and stout notes stay. Now it is a peppered stout. Finishes with a burn and an french roast coffee bitterness.

Fuller bodied with carbonation that, if you belch, brings a pepper burn back.

Interesting. One to share (as this is a bomber). Hard to finish, but not because you dislike it, but because it is just alot of spice.

On tap at Ballast Point Linda Vista, served in a taster glass.

Pours a dark, smoky black with a minimal brown head. Still able to barely see through when held up to the light.

The nose is quite exquisite and complex. Tons of curry with both coconut and cumin in the background. Conjures images of being at an Indian restaurant just from the smell.

Each sip I was able to distinguish one or two of the ingredients. The cayenne heat was always present in the middle of the taste. Not overpowering at all and similar in strength to that of Stone's Chipotle Smoked Porter. I honestly wasn't able to distinguish the kaffir lime, no matter how hard I tried. I'm not totally sold on the contrasting flavors of curry and coconut together. I do enjoy them in Thai cooking however.

Both carbonation and viscosity were around average for the style and appropriate. Finish lingers just a bit with a little spice and roast.

I think a taster is the correct serving size for this beer. Though I could handle up to a half pint, if there were a touch more coconut. Very unique beer which I would consider buying if/when it gets bottled for Holiday Wine Cellar.

This version is 7.0 abv

A - Nice near black body, light tan head, fairly big, lots of cling left.

S - Dusty, smoky, chalky, filled with curry. Cannot discern more than that.

T - Stout flavors take a seat to the obvious huge Indian flavors. Coconut present. Kinda Thai like. More stout here than smell, but just add some stout to smell and you get it.

M - Medium body, good carb, balance very on the spice side, ending in spice. Not terribly balanced.

D - Wish I had just one glass. This one is fun, but won't be after 2-3.

A: Very dark brown. Slightly translucent. Forms a small creamy brown head. Some light lacing.

S: A rather interesting blend of curry, spice, and balsa wood.

T: Starts off with a strong bitter coffee flavor then turns to dry (unsweet) coconut. Finishes with cayenne spice and even more curry.

M: Medium bodied - light for the style. Spicy in more ways than one.

O: A very interesting beer. Overall, good, but can't say I thoroughly enjoyed it. But, I will say it is very different and the blend of flavors does seem to work in a rather odd fashion.

Reviewed from notes. Poured from bomber into a Russian River pint glass.

A: Pours a very dark brown, almost opaque, with a thin tan head that fades quickly and no visible carbonation.

S: Wow, there's a lot going on here. Complex and unique. My first thought is Indian food - curry and lime - with some spicy peppers and black pepper, tobacco and musty leather notes like an old book, and just a bit of cacao. This smells a bit like you stuck your head into a spice cabinet. Fascinating, and I can't stop smelling it.

T: Starts with big curry and dark roasted malts - but the curry and spices dominate. Then there's a definite citrus lime flavor in the middle. Near the swallow, there's a cayenne pepper kick that lasts after the swallow and remains noticeable in the esophagus and on the lips. Interesting and tasty, but I'm not sure I could drink an entire bottle.

M: Full-bodied, low carbonation sensation, and low alcohol presence.

O: Well, this was exactly what it said was going to be. It was a different and challenging beer for me. Very interesting, and I think I would recommend it for someone looking to try something very different or as a change of pace. Certainly not an everyday drinker.

So Raul is just laying low at tha Joint, The Playground, in Downtown Santa Ana, CA on another bright and sunny Sunday afternoon. And although this isn't your "Sunday drinking" beer, Raul has no complaints about it.

This thang is kind of like that Aubrey Plaza hoochie; I mean, I would, again and again, but Raul couldn't exactly tell you why. There's something exotic and intoxicating about it, but its foreign enough that Raul cannot put a place on it.

22oz bottle to a snifter

A - Pours black with a small kahki head that vanishes pretty quick. Not a trace of lacing.

S - Fresh cut cedar/pine wood off the initial pour, strong spices, madras curry, cardamom, cumin, black peppercorns, lavender, purfumy.

T - Spices galore, sharp black pepper, cumin, turmeric, madras curry, basil, coriander, there's some chili heat in there as well. There's a salty sharpness in there that cuts through the spice. With the exception of some roasted malts, the spices basically drive the train taking over any other yeast, malt or hop that could be present. Finishes spicy with a solid dose of chili heat left on the palate.

M - Low carbonation, it's thin but heavy liquid, finishes dry and oily with chile heat.

This screams Indian food. If you don't like it, chances are you probably wont like this beer. It's a full on curry spice assault on the palate. Good chili heat as well. The bottle version seems to be hotter in terms of chile spice than on tap. Curry lovers, you have found your beer.

Poured into a ~4 ounce sample glass in the brewery’s tasting room. This beer poured a very dark brown with a nice touch of tan head that clings to the corner of the glass. The aroma is very unique. Coconut is probably the most prominent smell as well as some lightly roasted dark malts. There is a definite spiciness to the aroma but I would not have identified it as curry had I not known. Tastes spicey and dry. The curry is definitely present but melds well with the rest of the beer. Coconut is pretty big. At 9% there is no surprise that there is a significant booziness. Its a bit too boozy to be very drinkable which hurts the beer a bit but well carbonated and the strong coconut is really pleasant to me. Definitely a well crafted beer that combines flavours I never expected to see used in brewing!

Pours opaque black with a half inch head of beige. A few whisps on the surface and elongated dots of lacing throughout the glass.

Aromatics lead off with bakers chocolate, Kahlua, espresso, coconut, and spice.
Hints of curry, mint, and peppercorns follow through. Hawaiin Tropic suntan lotion drizzeled over Oreo cookies.

Full bodied with a snappy, prickly mouthfeel.

Charred malt, dark chocolate, coffee beans, and chili peppers start the palate. Coconut shavings, spicy curry, and white pepper follow through.

Finishes with a lingering throat burn, bitter chocolate, and coconut.

Interesting beer, but definately one to split a bottle with 2-3 people.

black in color with a mild head. smell is intriguing, its got the chocolate and malts of a stout but its also got this spicy, hot aroma to it too. the taste is very similar, full bodied stout with a big kick of spiciness on the back end. the heat becomes overwhelming as you continue through the glass, which hurts drinkability.

overall good if you like hot stuff, but its quite spicy.

This is tough to say, but this is the first beer from Ballast Point I had difficulty drinking. It took me about an hour and a half to swig a 22oz Bottle. That being said, I enjoyed this a lot. I would get it again, but only if I were going to share it with others and have about 4-6 oz of it.

A - Pours black like a typical stout, more of a beige head/foam. When I poured it, I went down the side 3/4 and straight down the middle for the last 1/4 and only got about a half an inch head.

S - Not necessarily an assault on your sinus, but definitely complex and alluring. First thing I can make out is the Cumin, then an undertone of curry and coconut.

T - This is the part I had trouble with. It was a bit too spicy for me. I think the mix of spices and flavors was just brilliant, but I'm addicted to hops, so it was a shock at first. Like the smell I tasted Cumin first. Then the curry came in loud and a bit belligerent. Then only a little bit of lime and a undertone of coconut. I think if the coconut was more powerful, this would have been a much better beer.

M - The best: Smooth and a bit of a bite in the aftertaste.

O - Over all, I'd say this was definitely a sipping beer, and is better suited to be paired with food. I had this on it's own as a night cap and it did the job fine, but I wish I had it with food to see if it exploded any more. Great brewery, nice beer, and I MIGHT try it again.
