I've been looking for Ballast Point's normal IPA but have always went with Sculpin and I finally tried the Big Eye.
A - Beautiful reddish color. Nice white head with light lacing. Crystal clear making it look very appetizing.
S - Nice hop nose with your typical NW hops being predominant. There are also some grassy, herbal, and floral tones but mostly the citrus hop smell. Slight hint of malt but definitely hop forward. Could have a bigger hop smell by dry hopping more.
T - Has a more balanced hop profile with about 65% hops and 45% ale in flavor. It's a nice IPA that has everything you would expect from a normal IPA. Light hints of malt and a subtle ale character that make this a good drinking beer. Nice mild bitter finish that helps to clear the palate.
M - Moderate to light mouth-feel. Has some bitterness and finishes clean giving it some balance even though it is hop forward. perfect carbonation making the body stand tall.
Overall, a solid NW IPA. I did enjoy this IPA but isn't the best IPA I've ever had and I could see why they went with it in their year round lineup. It's not offensive from any angle and could be a nice session beer, It's basically a hoppy pale ale. I'd recommend it for specifically that reason.
