So stoked to see Ballast Point in Boise - 22oz bomber, dated 10/12/2013 - poured into my Sam Smith nonic.

A: Coppery sunset orange with good clarity and some off-white head with decent lacing.

S: Pungent, pithy citrus peel and some pine, with very faint malt undertones. Plenty of grapefruit and floral character on this one too.

T: Seems to lean more piney and a bit herbal on the palate, with some fainter tropical fruitiness. Quote a bit of bitter grapefruit again; decent bitterness all the way around for an IPA.

MF: Medium bodied, with some cleansing dryness from the hop bitterness. No complaints here.

O: A really decent IPA, a good drinker and a good value to boot.

This just recently started appearing in (more affordable) six-packs in the Chicago area. I had to grab a pack while it was fresh. Standard long-neck brown bottle into my Beer Geek Nation tulip glass.

Appearance (4/5): Orange-copper, hazed, two-finger head, reduces to one finger. Lacing sticks to the sides of the glass. Pretty standard looking West Coast IPA stuff right here, in terms of visuals.

Smell (4.25/5): Exceptionally floral, piney, grapefruity–just tons tons of fresh hop character (praise the lord), and no malt present in the nose.

Taste (4.25/5): Pithy pink grapefruit and orange, strong bitterness comes on in the aftertaste. Fairly simple, reflecting its vigorous hopping with columbus and centennial. This is a West Coast-style IPA through and through. Light bready malt in the middle adds a bit of a counterpoint to the hops before the hops return with a vengeance.

Mouthfeel (4.5/5): Dazzling amount of carbonation on this one. Medium-light body. Twinge of prickly bitterness all over the tongue. Dry as hell in the aftertaste.

Overall (4.25/5): I'm not sure which IPA by Ballast Point I prefer–Big Eye or Sculpin. Ballast Point has created in Big Eye a slightly less balanced India Pale Ale, and I mean that in a good way. This is a dry, grapefruity, piney beast that keeps the alcohol level low enough to make this a good beer to drink multiples of. This is one hell of an IPA, and you'll love it with some blue cheese, steak, or fajitas.

Pours a deep orange amber with a medium off white lasting head, some lacing. Aroma and Taste is of sweet caramel malt, yeast, floral citrus hops, some orange peel and fruity esters and flavor come thru. Palate is a medium body, mild carbonation with a nice combination of sweet malt and floral hops balance. Finishes with a good caramel malt background, fruity, yeasty, some orange peel and good floral hops balance. A very good, flavorful and enjoyable brew.

Poured into McDonald's collector's glass (I'm...away from my glassware at the moment). Clear golden orange with a huge fluffy white head that stays around and leaves nice lacing. Smell is fruity tropical hops, getting pineapple and citrus, with some herbal notes as well, and some crackery malt. Taste is crackery/buttery malt, bitter and slightly fruity hops. An unassuming but solid IPA, well-balanced and flavorful. This one shows that not everything needs to be a super-complex hop bomb to be delicious.

Enjoy by date 10/27/13. Poured into straight pint glass. Poured a clean, clear, coppery amber color with over 1/4 of just off-white head that had decent retention and moderate lacing.

The aroma was a little sweet up front, then gave way to some very nice pine and floral hops. No real malt or grain in the nose however. There was a bit of sweetness at the front of the palate as well, then big, bright hops took over. The above mentioned floral and pine notes across the front and middle, with some gently bitter citrus on the back.

The body was a bit fuller than average, and had a bit of light stickiness. The citrus lingered a few moments at the end. Drinkability was good for a 7% IPA, not a quick, smooth drinker, but one that's a nice companion during a couple innings of a ball game. Overall, a pretty nice brew. One that's not particularly different or outstanding from so many others, but a beer that's certainly worth your time.
