Hops: Columbus, Centennial

Nose is crystal-clear strong, citrusy, clean hops. First taste matches the aroma perfectly. Rounds out with some malts in the second half, never quite gets sweet. Then drops into a brief bitter taste before dissipating quickly. Very dry finish. High alcohol is definitely undercover and doesn’t out itself at all.

Definitely fits into the Ballast Point style, next to the Sculpin and the Calico. Little brother of the Sculpin.

Overall: B+, crisp, clean, easy-drinking IPA

22 oz bomber, no bottle date, poured into a pint glass.

A- Pours a deep orange color with a thick two-finger fluffy white head, leaves crusty lacing all over the place. Has a lot of snow-globe like sediment floating in it, especially in the last pour. Probably from age, but I'm not gonna judge it on that since it's not the brewer's fault and I guess the store should have pulled the bottle if it was too old. Looks awesome otherwise. (Ballast Point, if you're reading this, date your bottles!)

S- Some fruit, leafy hops, a bit of sweet malt, nothing really outstanding, with no bottle date I can't tell if this is from age.

T- Big bitter hops right up front, there's a bit of fruit thrown in there (oranges), but mostly I'm getting a lot of pine, resin, and leaves. Big thick caramel malt evens out the bitterness a bit. Finishes with a clean bitterness.

M- Medium-bodied, plenty of carbonation with a smooth and slightly chewy feel, dry finish. Surprisingly drinkable and refreshing.

O- A pretty tasty, drinkable IPA, I'm actually sorry I'm not eating something right now, this is just the kind of IPA that would go great with food, if I could get this in a bar I could easily knock back a few pints.

A: dark golden red. Pour with a very thin head.

S: hints of pine blend nicely with subtle hints of fruit. A sweet grape smell stands out.

T: hard to pin this one down. Seems like there's going to be so much more, but it's not a complete disappointment. Very smooth going down, laking in initial hop bite then going overboard with the bitter at the end. The true lack of complexity is what makes this a good beer.

M: truly a roller coaster for your mouth. Light smooth carbonation leading into a near sour bitter.

O: fair price for a fair beer. Surprisingly bitter for such a smooth lead in.

A- Lovely honey/amber elixer! Tall white head that fades slowly and drags itself back into the glass leaving a islands of sticky lacing. Pretty clear with nice carbonation.

S- Orange, pineapple, yellow grapefruit and some faint peaches. Really piney and dank! Picking up the sweet malts and a touch of yeast.

T- More bitter than I would thought. Not overwhelming, but I wish the fruit would shine thru a bit more. The malt comes thru a bit and mellows the pine. Certainly not as fruit forward as Sculpin.

M- Nice blend of bitter, sweet, and citrusy. The bitterness sticks to your teeth a little bit. Really wishing this was a bit more citrus forward.

O- Decent IPA. I've had better, and I've certainly had worse. Not sure I'll pick this up again at the price ($14.99/6).

12 oz. bottle poured into pint glass.

A: Pours medium to light amber. One inch white head slowly fades into a film on top. Yeast sediment is suspended in the liquid.

S: Smell is pretty piney. I smell a tiny bit of grapefruit and some dank hops.

T: Hop profile is really floral and slightly piney. Fruit hop profile isn't too prolific, but there's enough to add some depth. There's a decent amount of caramel malt that lends a decent amount of sweetness.

M: Slightly creamy, oily, slick. Medium body. Ample carbonation provides decent balance to some of the more aggressive floral and piney hop profile.

O: I'm usually into the more tropical IPAs, but this one is damn, damn, damn good. I found this 3 hours away from the only distributor in the state, so I was quite happy about that. We don't get ANY Ballast Point up here, so this was a great surprise. I'd definitely buy this again as a go-to IPA if it were more readily available. I like the hop and malt profile very much.

Poured into a beer mug.

A: Pours a hazy copper color, with a soapy two finger off white head. Slightly above average head retention/lacing.

S: Nothing too groundbreaking. Mixture of citrus/piny hops and bready maltiness. On the other hand, it's pretty strong, even more than usual.

T: The flavor is mostly pine-centric hoppiness clustered on the back end. There's an increase in grapefruit notes after about 10 sips, subtly hinting to some nice hop complexity. Still, the lacking balance (there is a malt presence on the opening, just not enough) and slight medicinal soapiness of the hop profile are a bit offputting (though not deal breaking).

M: Medium bodied, slightly syrupy, high carbonation, very sticky, drying hop finish. Textbook west coast IPA.

O: Decent, but the soapy hop profile mars its drinkability some. Well worth a try, but there are better IPAs on the market (perhaps including BP's very own Sculpin? Damnit, another beer to put on the wants list...)
