pours a very clear amber color with a thick white head. has a citrus type smell and grass. leaves a nice lacing on the glass. very light in the mouth and easy drinking. first time i bought this brew i was not a big fan but that has changed. i find it to be very good and I will certainly be buying again. wonder how the double ipa is?? hopefully i can find it locally. (368 characters)

wow, 271 reviews as of this writing. A great looking crystal clear golden amber colored beer with a huge billowy white heat. aroma and taste are an ode to the centennial hop. Yup, I can see this as a hop head's go to beer. A refreshingly crisp IPA and nicely only 6% ABV. (271 characters)

22oz bottle.

Poured a darker, murky orange color with an averaged sized off white head. Aromas of stronger pine and spices. Citrus (oranges and grapefruit) and caramel in the taste as well. Sweet start with a lightly bitter finish.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a pint glass. Clear, orange copper colored with a large, white head. Very sticky. Tons of lacing.

Aroma is filled with fruity and citrusy hops. A strong malt backbone is present and adds a bit of sweetness and balance to the aroma. Grapefruit and orange peel seem to be the most persistent of the aromas. Very nice.

Plenty of hop flavor and bitterness as well. The malt is a little more subdued than the aroma would dictate, but this is certainly a hop bomb. Lots of orange peel and orange juice. The malt backbone lends its hand in the sweetness and keeps this one very balanced. Hop bitterness in the end certainly informs one that this is a West Coast IPA.

Perfect amount of bitterness and sweetness in the finish. Medium bodied and quite sticky. Lingers about the palate and tongue for quite a while. A thoroughly drinkable and enjoyable beer. Glad I found this one. (906 characters)

Thank you very much for this bottle Hopasaurusrex.

Pours a very nice dark orange with dark yellow highlights, topped with a three finger cream colored head, great lacing.

Smell is of orange oil, malted grain, wet hay, wintergreen, and herbal liquors (absinthe).

Taste is very intense, metallic flavor similar to cilantro, pine resin, caramel roastiness, orange oil, and black pepper.

Feel is great for a AIPA, dense and intense but heavy carbonation makes it very refreshing and drinkable. (494 characters)

Had on tap at the Pink Elephant in San Diego. Nice copper/orange color with a small, wafty head and web lacing.

Great smell. Tons of pine, grapefruit, and tropical flowers.

Lots of hops on the palate. Resiny pine needles, pineapple, and grapefruit. Awesomely bitter finish. Love it. Extremely drinkable.

I'll be the first to admit I'm a little biased here. This was the first IPA I ever had and it's the brew that got me hooked on hops. I don't even think I knew what hops were supposed to taste or smell like before I tried this. Great hoppy brew and one of my favorites. (576 characters)

22oz. bottle into a pilsner.

clear amber orange with half an inch of head that's very close to white but not quite. leaves thin sticky webs of lace.

fantastic aroma. sweet, rounded citrusy aroma with the barest hints of caramel. grapefruit rinds, pineapple, and a hint of tropical fruits. bits of sweet tangerine and apricots as well.

taste is nice if a bit one-dimensional. a slightly raw, mildly abrasive wave of piney, pithy hops, a touch of malt, then an assertively hoppy bitter finish. smells a bit better than it tastes. rather heavy feel for an IPA. hops linger on the palate for quite a bit.

the bomber moved pretty quickly, although the bitter finish slows the drinkability down. a very good, but not great, IPA. (726 characters)

Pours a dark copper color from the bottle leaving 1 inch of foam that left lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was a nice citrus smell. The taste was the same citrus with a slightly bitter finish. Overall I think this one is nicely balanced and I will definitely seek this out again. (286 characters)

Sampled from a 22oz bottle in a tulip glass.

A - A deep golden ale with good clarity and a thick off white head with good lacing.

S - Lots of hops aroma with citrusy, floral and piney elements. Some malty sweetness too.

T - A complex rich and malty flavor with hop bitterness, malt and alcohol. I didn't think the hop flavors had a prominent enough role.

M - Thick and chewy consistency. Good carbonation.

D - A good beer but not as smooth and balanced as I like in a west coast IPA. (488 characters)

12 oz. bottle poured into pint glass.

A: Cloudy dark amber with a creamy off-white head. Decent lacing.

S: Wow! Strong citrusy (grapefruit) with floral notes.

T: Grapefruit with bitterness. Slight touch of malt with bitter hop finish that lingers.

M: Thick with strong carbonation. Maybe a bit too much but still very good.

D: The carbonation may get to you after a while. ABV is good.

Another great West Coast IPA. (421 characters)

I poured this beer into my tumbler at 50 degrees. The beer was cloudy with a bit of an orange hue to it. The beer was hoppy smelling and hoppy tasting ike it ought to be I guess. The beer also had great lacing up and down the glass. I guess this must be a great IPA according to the ratings, however I did not care for it and will not buy again. (345 characters)

A: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a copper color and a slightly cloudy texture. There was about a half inch of foamy, long-lasting head and some good lacing.

S: Had a fruity, floral scent, combined with some mild hops.

T: Not nearly as hoppy as most IPAs you come across. Tasted of grapefruit and some other fruits, but the hops were muted. Tasty nonetheless.

M: A pretty high amount of carbonation and a smooth, dry finish. Above medium-bodied.

D: This beer is slightly odd for an IPA, but oddly drinkable. It's not classic in style, but has a tasty and complex quality to it. (592 characters)

Big Eye IPA

Style: American IPA
ABV: 6.00 %

Out of the bottle into a chilled glass. I had this right after the AleSmith IPA, which I liked a lot. This beer was better.

They were mostly similar in appearance and taste until the finish. The Big Eye had a less bitter, less harsh finish than the AleSmith.

Recommended for any IPA lover. (366 characters)

Boy was I glad I tried this one. One of the better IPA's I've had and starting to like these left coast beers. Just a very smooth, balanced beer overall that you could just drink all day. I'm surprised my go to beer store has such a random beer from a well established Cali brewery and I wish they could get some more... this was a damn good IPA. (346 characters)

A: Paper thin layer of foam, copper color - 3.75, S: Very earthy, what I believe are Columbus hops, a hearty dose of caramely malt, a touch of toastiness - 4.25, Big grapefruit, some nuttiness, mildly pungent on the end, some crisp pine is also noticeable - 4.50, M: Some staying power on the tongue, a touch sticky - 4.25, D: A very solid IPA, not an extreme big but a well crafted beer - 4.25 (394 characters)

Pours a three finger white head that fades slowly to a thin layer, leaving a good lace. Nearly clear amber color. Good carbonation and medium bodied. Hoppy nose. Flavor is sweet grapefruit that fades to bitter grapefruit at finish. No surprises here. $1.83 for a 12oz bottle from Manchester Wine and Liquors Manchester, CT. (323 characters)

A: Lovely golden brown with a nice, creamy, white lace that sticks to the glass.

S: Caramel, Hops, Pine, Fruit

T: Vegetables, Exotic fruit, Caramel, Herbs.

M: Nice sweet initial taste of caramel and bread and ends with a fruity bitterness. Yessir!

A very drinkable ipa with a nice hop-profile. More please! (323 characters)

Pours very light copper with a frothy white head that leaves a ton of lacing before dwindling to a thin sheen.

Aroma is bursting with juicy citrus hop over a caramel malt base.

Taste is bready caramel malt and a hint of brown sugar. Hops are aggressive with resinous pine and fruity elements of tangerine, and pear. Finish is dry and clean.

Mouthfeel is light to medium. Crisp with a hint of hop oil residue. I would prefer a little more body.

A well made IPA. Pleasant and unified flavor lets this one go down easily. A good session brew. (545 characters)

Poured from a 12-ounce bottle into a Dogfish Head pint glass.

A: Pours a golden amber yellow with a one-finger head of tight, off-white carbonation. The brew leaves a nice, sticky lace covering the walls of the glass most of the way down.

S: Smells of citrus and piny hop aromas with a brisk fruity scent.

T: Tastes slightly sweet and malty at first, with a clean, caramel malt flavor coming through. The robust mid-palate is filled with pine hops and lush grapefruit. The finish is slightly sticky and sweet, with a drying, herbal hop leaf aftertaste.

M: Mouthfeel is light-medium bodied and very drinkable for a full-flavored IPA.

D: This is a crazy drinkable IPA and a real treat given I knew little to nothing about before picking up. The superb blanace and nice, fresh, light but still fulfilling hop flavors are really quite good. A great session IPA.

Ballast Point is definitely a name I'll have to keep in mind, if only for this IPA alone. Gives DFH a real run for its money in my mind, which is no small feat, as I'm a diehard fan of both 60 and 90 Minute IPAs. This is a must-try IPA. (1,100 characters)

Pours a hazy, rich, amber color with an inch slightly yellowed head. Good retention, and some lacing.

Aroma is ok. Definitely hoppy, with some citrus and honey. However, there is also a bit of pineapple in there.

Taste is ok. Certainly, hops are present. A bit citrusy, and some bitter pine. Also a little pineapple sweetness. Not my favorite IPA.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a moderate carbonation tingle.

Drinkability is moderate. Drinks fairly easily, but flavors are sub par IMO. (492 characters)

A: Nice copper color with a finger and a half of white head. Nice lacing.

S: Nice floral hop nose. Kind of one dimensional but thats the point.

T: Really powerful hop taste. Tastes more like a double than anything else. Not really balanced but that is ok.

M: Slightly sticky. Coats the tongue well.

D: Very nice beer. Reminds me of a poor man's masala mama. I mean that as a compliment. Double taste without the booze hammer. (429 characters)

On tap at Beer Run in Charlottesville, VA. Served in a 10 oz. mini-pint glass.

Appearance: Great lacing, clear, sparse carbonation. An orange-gold-bronze colored beer with one-finger head and good retention. Very good.

Aroma: Big citrus and tropical fruits - orange zest, grapefruit, pineapple - lots of caramelized sugars, a few leafy vegetal notes, and a healthy amount of pine. Nice.

Taste: Mellow but citrusy, lots of fruity zest, pineapple, grapefruit, tropical fruit (all of which contribute to a nice but not distracting or overwhelming tartness). Some light bitterness, particularly in the aftertaste. Pale and sweet bready malts, lightly caramelized.

Mouthfeel: Largely even, medium-bodied, and oily.

Drinkability: An above average IPA in all departments, without being mindblowing. Just a very good, very drinkable, very tasty IPA. Easily manageable alcohol and a lot of tasty notes, decently complex, and very enjoyable. (937 characters)

Appearance: Gorgeous reddish-copper ale with creamy eggshell-colored head. Head is rocky, has nice retention, and leaves great web-like lacing all the way down.

Smell: Big citric (grapefruit) hops, with some caramel and malt.

Taste: Graham cracker malts and citric hops are the first two flavors that come to mindl. A little heavier on the hop side with a good amount of pine resin/oiliness coming through, however a strong roasted malt flavor still makes itself known.

Mouthfeel: Creamy and medium bodied. More of a chewy feel than anything. Low carbonation and great bitter aftertaste!

Drinkability: Heavy on the hops, but backed up by a strong malt presence. Nowhere close to a session beer, but a really good example of a West Coast IPA. We'll probably try this one again. (781 characters)

22 oz bomber. Thanks to thaichile for this one!

A-Body is a cloudy bright amber that pours with a large off-white head. Great retention at 1 finger. Plenty of lacing left in the glass. Cloudiness is moderately thick and uniform and tiny bubbles can be seen rising to the top. Beautiful beer.

S- Plenty of citrus and spicy hop flavors dominate the nose. A slight malt presence can be noted in the background.

T-Citrus hop flavor is the highlight upfront with a soft toffee-like malt backbone. These flavors completely disappear for the finish where a big spicy hop flavor and a hint of roasted malt bitterness are showcased. Left to linger is some spicy hop flavor and a mild but long lasting residual bitterness. Lots going on. Very nice.

M- low to medium carbonation. Body is smooth and somewhat oily but seems to have that bottle-conditioned yeast presence to add to it.

D- This is a very nice west coast IPA. The bottle states a big floral hop presence but what I got from it was more of a spicy than floral presence (big plus for me). I'll remember that I like this one for future trades and when I travel. (1,115 characters)

Pours a cloudy amberish copper with a yellowish two fingers of lucious foam that retains nicley and leaves behind some sticky globs of lacing. The nose smells like pineapple Starburst fruit chews, with other citrusy hops as well. Citrus and grapefruit notes are first to greet the tounge followed by a light malty balance, leaning heavily toward the hops. Nice medium body with tingling hoppy bitterness and soft carbonation. This is a quality AIPA,give it a try. (461 characters)
