Our Award-winning IPA, with a citrus twist.
Our Grapefruit Sculpin is the latest take on our signature IPA. Some may say there are few ways to improve Sculpin’s unique flavor, but the tart freshness of grapefruit perfectly complements our IPA’s citrusy hop character. Grapefruit’s a winter fruit, but this easy-drinking ale tastes like summer.

The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. It showcases bright flavors and aromas of apricot, peach, mango & lemon. The lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin fish is considered some of the tastiest. Something that has a sting but tastes great; sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale. This version of our Sculpin IPA has grapefruit added; the grapefruit flavor really enhances the citrus aroma of the hops.

This particular offering was on my personal bucket list and thought I would never have the chance to enjoy it unless I went to California. Thank you World of Beer Viera Florida. One word says it all for me, Wow ! I am a big fan of West Coast styles of IPA's, if you are a fan of this style and like grapefruit seek this one out. Cheers! (336 characters)

12oz can poured into tulip glass

Look: golden colored with about an inch of head

Smell: citrus with the grapefruit coming through

Taste: smooth with a mouthful of citrus, hops, and grapefruit

Feel: excellent carbonation

Overall; I was skeptical about the grapefruit as I don't care for fruit in my beer but wow does this really work. This is a 5 star beer if there ever was one. Crisp and refreshing and wow does that grapefruit come thru. Another excellent offering from Ballast Point! (494 characters)

An exceptional beer to begin with, it is only enhanced with the addition of grapefruit. This is as close as I have come to having the joys of Cigar City Citrus Wizard being reproduced. (184 characters)

I happen to think it's extraordinary. I have really enjoyed every ballast point beer I have had so far and this one is out of the park. The Julian date on the bottle reads 15057. Pours very clear and orange with a bone white head of foam that held well and left handsome lacing. Nose is so authentic with grapefruit. it's heady with it, then for perfume it has the scent of fresh orange. A bit of twiggy and woody pine. It smells so fresh and tantalizing. Drinks like a an ocean breeze. All that tantalizing citrus. The orange is bright and light. The grapefruit is something wonderful. It has all the flavor of a real grapefruit but none of the pucker or bitterness of it. it's like they took all that flavor and sweetened it just enough. The malt is elusive but a touch sweet with honey and so soft that it simply cascades over your tongue. Mouthfeel approaches medium but is still wonderfully light with just enough weight from that honey malt to satisfy the palate in a very sensual way. Right before the swallow is this breezy little spritz from carbonation that is so whimsical it made me laugh out loud. It's as though you got a little sea mist at the back of your throat. Perfect crisp finish that brings a little bit of the fruit rind a touch of bitterness to end this amazing beer. It's so good. (1,331 characters)

Wow this is better than the normal sculpin. This is everything great about a WIPA. Subtle notes of grapefruit really mellow out the alcohol and compliment the backbone. Just a beautiful IPA. My favorite from them. 5/5 for me. (225 characters)

Very good I PA although it does taste quite a bit like an orange Capri Sun. I'm still deciding after a half a pint whether I like it as a seasonal summertime only beer or something I could drink at a restaurant during dinner. Overall I would buy again (251 characters)

This brew just took an already excellent beer and made it that much better. The Grapefruit Sculpin has such an enjoyable freshness to it, a great IPA to trick in the sun while doing yard work, or practicing your shot (216 characters)

Wow, that stuff is sooo good! Just flawless. Appearance is great with the huge fluffy head, lots of lace, clear amber color. Aroma is a crazy mix of caramel and hop grapefruit that somehow works. Flavor's the same way and has it all in perfect harmony. excellent Palate. Drink the hell out of this beer. (303 characters)

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a Belgian tulip. Bottled on April 15th. 2015 (according to the Julian date printed on the bottle), so not quite a month old.

Tastes very much like the Sculpin we all know and love, but with an awesome grapefruit smell and finish. It's not overpowering or sweet. It's perfect. Find this beer and drink it fresh!

Cheers! (353 characters)

A: Pours a hazy amber with minimal head and thin lacing... Looks absolutely mouth-watering.

S: Smell is of candi sugar, grapefruit, floral piney hops - a sweet, velvety, lovely scent.

T: Taste follows nose with malty, fruity sweetness balanced with a moderate hop finish. One of the best beers I've tasted, hands down. Ballast managed a well-executed hop profile - all the wonderful fruitiness of the hops without being a huge, bitter hop explosion on the palate.

M: Smooth, silky, with slight hop stickiness at the finish.

O: A masterpiece of a beer, this truly is a standout amongst Ballast Point's fine offerings. I just wish it were more available, as it would be a go-to beer for sure. This is as close to a perfect brew as you can get. (747 characters)

If you haven't tried this, AND you like IPAs AND grapefruit, please try this. I happen to like both IPAs and grapefruit, and it is a top 10 beer for me. Perfectly balanced without that artificial fruit flavor your sometimes get from beer/fruit combos. Try it. (262 characters)

Thanks to Schteve for turning me on to Ballast Point Sculpin a couple of weeks ago. My new favorite beer. I live IPA's the hippies the better, and normally not a huge fan if fruit flavors in beer (with the exception of M.H. #9)
The flavor, smell, look and feel of this Beria amazing. So many great things all together to form the most amazing tasting beer. Well done Ballast Point, and thanks! (393 characters)

Look: Beer has near perfect clarity with an amber color.

Smell: The smell is one of the most unique and phenomenal. Up front it smells like a fresh cut grapefruit, with a hints of the traditional sculpin aroma in the background.

Taste: Up front a sweet grapefruit flavor hits, which is complimented by the "juiciness" (for lack of a better work) of the hops. On the backend, you get the distinct bitter taste of a grapefruit, which I love. Note I am both a grapefruit and IPA person (I always toyed around the idea of making a amarillo/cascade IPA with actual grapefruit); this is one of the best IPAs I have tasted so far. IMHO, the grapefruit is a perfect compliment to the juicy/bitter nature of IPAs. (711 characters)

Look: Clean and yellow/orange. Never sure why one rates the look of a beer…

Smell: Grapefruit zest with lovely hop aroma

Taste: Just like the smell but better. The zest really highly the hops in regular Sculpin

Feel: Dry, a little sweet but never cloying…

Overall: A superb IPA, easily one of my all-time favorites. Everything is perfectly balanced IMHO. I could drink this all of the time and never get tired of it. (428 characters)

A perfect IPA. The original is amazing, but they have improved upon perfection. Bringing in actual grapefruit to accentuate the already, over the top, hop aroma is genius. What is left to be said? Amazing orange, slightly hazy appearance. Smell is malt and uhhhh, grapefruit! Taste is a sweet and bitter grapefruit hop bomb with a solid malt backbone. Some piney notes as well. Perfect mouthfeel. Very chewy and full. It's a perfect IPA in my opinion. (451 characters)

The perfect hot day beer. Smell is all grapefruit, taste is all grapefruit (with some sculpin) and it all goes down incredibly smooth. Try to get this guy within 2 months and I guarantee you won't be dissapointed. Really is one of the best beers ever. (251 characters)

Bottled on May 29th. Poured from a 12oz bottle into a tulip.

A: Pours a lively, bright orange with a 1 finger head of white foam. The head settles to a thin cap that stays atop for the whole beer. Dots of lacing line the glass from top to bottom.

S: Fragrant, juicy aromas of ripe grapefruit jump right out of the glass. Some varying other citrus fruits in the background, but the aroma is mainly fresh, ripe grapefruit.

T: Just like regular Sculpin, the taste perfectly matches the nose. Crisp, clean flavors of ripe grapefruit along with ripe melon. Some other flavors of varying citrus fruits, but the grapefruit dominates.

M: Medium bodied with high carbonation and a clean, crisp mouthfeel. This beer is very refreshing with only a moderate amount of bitterness.

O: Grapefruit Sculpin takes an amazing IPA and somehow manages to make it even better. I've never really liked grapefruit, but this beer is too damn good. The grapefruit does a perfect job of enhancing the natural citrus flavors of Sculpin without ruining what is already a great beer. This has gotta be the best IPA I've ever had, and since IPAs are all over these days, that says a lot. This beer is dangerously drinkable and refreshing. The perfect thirst quencher on a hot summer day! (1,264 characters)

My penultimate ipa, I can't recommend this beer enough. It tastes like straight up grapefruit juice, being both sweet and bitter and juicy. Smells like it tastes, looks like liquid gold. Awesome! (198 characters)

One of my favorite beers. Living in so-cal, I'm always getting a fresh batch. And this one is a beauty, full of sweet and bitter gulps. Beautiful golden pour, the grapefruit is indeed present with smell and taste. (213 characters)

Purchased a 64oz growler from Whole Foods. Pours a nice copper-orange with a velvety head. The smell is heavy fresh grapefruit. It's incredible. Taste is more of that delicious grapefruit juice and all the normal awesomeness of Sculpin. This is liquid heaven. So very glad I was able to get this and will go after it again. Excellent job, Ballast Point! (353 characters)
