Picked up a 22oz bomber from Baron's Market in Point Loma for $6. and poured it into a Brouwerij 't Ij branded tulip glass.

Batch size: 13 gallons
Target O.G. 1.070

Grain: Great Western 2-Row, Briess Munich, Briess Caramel Vienna, Briess Caramel Munich, Briess 80L, and Briess Blackprinz

Mash Temp: 149 F / Mash Time: 20 Minutes / Sweet Wort Volume: 14 Gallons / Boil Time: 60min / Target IBU: 70

Hops Used: CTZ and Centennial / Yeast: White Labs California Ale Yeast

A: Pours a beautiful mahogany hue with a thin tan head that dissipates after a few sips, leaving only a small amount of lacing in its tracks.

S: Sweet carmel and raw cookie dough, light hop comes though (earthy moss) but not very aggressive, lightly toasted grain - more malt than hop, but just enough to push this one into the "hoppy red ale" realm.

T: On point with the nose, but the hops I missed in the smell come through big time in the flavor. Much more toasted grain as well. Slight booze on the back end. Very tasty, well balanced and represents the style extremely well.

M: Medium bodied, slick and creamy, well carbonated for the style, and a good amount of bitter hop that lingers for a while, finishes clean.

Great beer for the first outing of this series. Been hearing about it at the brew house for a while now...glad to see Home Brew Mart's vision finally come to fruition.

Long live the home brewer and Home Brew Mart for that matter!

On tap at the Ballast Point Tasting Room and Kitchen.

Clear dark red-brown with a vey nice beige head. A little spotty lacing

Feel: medium to medium-full body; smooth for style; Medium carbonation.

Smell: hmm. not as expected and a bit dank, but a clear hop presence.

Taste: lightly spicy, moderate-high hoppy; faint malt backbone.

O: interesting but not relatively strong among BP's offerings.

Serving type: on-tap

22oz bottle. Deep clear copper with a rich off-white head. This retains with a smooth creaminess that drenches the sides of the glass with thick sticky lace. The aroma smells of fresh pine and green citrus, with a malty combo of burnt grains and sticky sweetness behind it. The taste is similar, with a fresh blast of citrus and resin that sits against a backbone of sweet caramel and toasted graininess. Pine and bitterness really stick hard in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and prickly on the tongue but then more oily and smooth underneath which combines with a well hid ABV to keep this drinking pretty darn easy. This is a nicely done American Amber with the type of aggressive hop character and an equally assertive malt presence that I really go for in the style. I’m glad I picked this one up.

Pours into an imperial pint glass a rich clear copper/bronze with a nice tightly formed one finger off white head atop.Aromas are nutty and doughy with with mild earthy and leafy hops. Not overly sweet on the palate with nutty malt flavors at the onset, some more of the bread dough and earthy somewhat spicy hops in the finish. It's not a big left coast hopped up red but it's a solid beer, nice job.
