Original Joe's is a chain of sport bars, the first of which I remember seeing being this one, located just off of the 124th street 'High Street' shopping district. It has a decent sized parking lot for the area, but is usually full at quittin' time.
The bar has an open layout plan, exposed pipes and ductwork overhead, lacquered wood pillars all around, and red brick accents. The patio is quite big, and overlooks the parking lot and a wooded ravine, next to a major road, but has glass walls, which dampen the outside noise a fair bit. But, this being Edmonton, it's only open for maybe 5 months a year.
There are a number of small LCD televisions, always tuned to a variety of sporting events, and they are cool about you asking to change one of them to a different channel. The clientele is predominantly groups of mixed sex and age, couples on dates, and after work outings. I say this, because I've gone there for all those reasons myself. Bathrooms are clean.
The service is usually pretty good - the waitresses tend to know their stuff, or will find out for you with a smile, especially if they've been there for any amount of time, and the bartender almost always greets you when you walk in.
The beer has been the best in the city for a while, for taps - all micros, and adequate macros - so, Alley Kat, Amber's, Wild Rose, Brew Brothers, Sleemans, and their house beer - currently a blonde, red, honey brown, and pils - made by Big Rock. BMC bottles are available, and are sometimes depressingly common on tables when you look around.
For grub, the food is above-average pub fare - burgers, pizza, stir fries, sandwiches, and appetizers - I like the 'pick 2 sides' thing they offer for a main dish, as well as the wooden condiment and silverware case at each table.
Prices are average, they have specials every day, when one or a few of their taps are a buck or two off a pint. Food value is high, you get a lot for your money.
A long-time go-to bar of mine, the beer being the main attraction, of course, with the laid-back atmosphere making those pints go down all the better.
