Picked this up as a surpries at Grocery Outlet in Berkeley for $3, figured how bad could it be. Actually, not so bad..even from a warm shelf in a discount store. Taste was a big caramel with some hop bitterness in this. Mouthfeel was a smooth caramel, with some bitterness on the finish. Overall, pretty drinkable and not so bad for ending up at a discount store.

Pours a bit of a dark yellow. Not much head or aroma.

Taste, super bitter, not much hop mouthfeel, malt bill was a little light, which is ok. This was just all bittering hops I guess. Really lacked any noteworthy hop taste (pine, citrus etc. . . ) nor malt (caramel, chocolate, pale etc. . .).

You know when a homebrewer skimps on ingredients, for instance, hops, and just says "i'll just do the hop boil twice as long, with half as many hops." Yeah, that's kind of what I got here. A beer that would be good, if they didn't cut corners. Spring for some dry hopping next time guys. Or flavoring. But just bittering isn't cutting it.

At least it was only $4.5 for a bomber, and the drinkability got better as your palate got used to the one trick pony bitterness.

Pours a pale copper amber with 1/4" of soapy, bubbly head. Earthy, piny, grassy hop aromas in the nose. Nice, bready malt character with pine and citrus fruit notes from the hops. Mouthfeel is medium bodied and refreshing with moderate carbonation.

This is a nice IPA with a decent hop character and a solid malt character. At times it's a little unbalanced, but overall it's tasty.

Picked this up in Rogers, AR on a flyer, let's see whether we have gold or crap...

Pours amber with 2 fingers of rocky sand colored head. Great head retention & good lacing

S: Grassyness & leafy hops, some apricot notes

T: Woody hops, some bready notes, leafy tobacco notes up front. Slight toffee notes get pushed aside by more leafy hops, plus some herbal hops as well once warm. Some pear & Winesap apple notes as well, hop bitterness is moreish with slight grapefruit presence as well. finishes with woody herbal hop bitterness & a touch of canned peaches

MF: Chewy, slight carbonation, nice creamyness, good balance

A decent stab at the style that skews English IMO. I prefer more pine & citrus, but this at least mentally green lights me to give any other Pale Horse beers a shot...

A: Hopyard pours a dirty orange with a translucent nature. Within lies a light and lazy display of carbonation, on top a creamy light tan head that was foamy, stayed a bit, and left only a modest calling card on the vessel for lace.

S: Faint hoppiness, sweet caramel, orange blossom, and dried vegetation. Not even pale ale strength here much less ipa with an aroma of dried weeds.

T: Lemony-pine hops mix with a sweet caramel grain touch upfront. Buttered crossiant with some floral notes appear in the middle. Hopped well for an ipa, just it seems like a mesh-mash flavor wise, not clearly defined, homogenous and just not very tasty. Grapefruit caramel jucie sweetness ends with a dry and bitter flowery vegetative finish.

M: Medium body, creamy textured, softly carbonated.

O: Not very tasty over-all. Lacks crispness and the hop palate is a wreck, everything clashing into a muddled mess. Hopyard dog is a junkyard dog with a dirty flavor, mutt hop complexity and lacks a clear defined flavor that will make me never consider buying this again. Avoid.

Found a bottle at a Plaid Pantry here near my home in the boonies of PDX...

- Super clear, and copper ale... served slightly warmer than usual... the head was 2 fingers thick, and hung around awhile... left a constant thin blanket of foam.

- Right at bottle opening... a rush of sweet grassy hops sprang to life.... up close there is a fine thin veil of caramel and bready sweetness... and a large hop profile.. pine, floral.. and grassy.

- At first there were some small off flavors.. like bandaid.. some malty and grassy funk... but in ironed itself out to a thin bready sweet malt, and huge hop bitterness with a nice floral candy-like finish.

- Medium bodied overall and rather light for a 7.2% IPA... little sticky and resinous.. but overall good.

- Not a bad brew at all, and a nice offering from a Brewery I have never had nor heard of. Glad it's out there.

A: golden with orange hues
S:subdued but appealing grapefruit, tangerine. maltiness also evident.
T: big rich, fresh, complete and balanced right through to the end. Bitterness nicely supports not dominates. Hops and malt integrate nicely. Alcohol is 7.2% which is usually too high for my taste but I'm surprised how well it fits with this beer.
M: fresh, full
O: a very nice IPA that I would certainly buy again. I'll look to try it on tap to compare.

Poured from a 22oz bottle into a mug glass.

A: The beer is a bright amber color, with a large off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick but spotty lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains floral hops, citrus and caramelized malts.

T: The taste starts out with sweet flavors of citrus and caramel. Then a strong but not over-powering hops bitterness comes in. The malt character is hearty but not too heavy; however there isn’t the same kind of balance you get from the better beer in the style. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: A little crisp and a little smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, decent kick, decent representation of style, it’s a solid beer but there are several other IPA’s that I would select before this one.

Light copper color, fair amount of off white head (though I did pour a little warm).

Floral hop aroma up front, bit of malt in the background

Light malt flavor up front, medium hop and mild acidic finish. Hop almost has an aspect of soap to it. MF is medium heavy, leading to average drinkability.

Pretty much your standard hop heavy West Coast IPA. Fairly average as far as it goes- if you can find it at a decent price it is definitely worth a shot.

A-Presents a golden amber with a two finger, off-white head with good retention and ample lacing.

S-Floral and citrusy hops, with some malt sweetness also noted.

T-Fairly well balanced. Not an in your face aggressively hopped IPA. Hops are present but don't assault the taste buds. A milder IPA with a pleasant malt backbone. Taste improves as it warms.

M-Very smooth and balanced. Good carbonation.

D-A good, but not great IPA. A very drinkable IPA for a 7.2% ABV. Presently only bottled in 22 oz. bombers. Many good IPAs are available in more affordable six packs.

Pale Horse is the only brewery (that is not a brewpub) in Salem, Oregon that opened in 2009. Hopyard Dog IPA is the third offering and the best I've had so far.

22 oz bomber. Crystal clear orange beer with a beautiful thick frothy eggshell white head. Strong aromas, citrus( lemony),spruce and spice. mmm flavour showcases the citric hops..though its more like a slightly bitter orange and zest. This has also a very good malt backbone which prevents the cirtus going over the top. Very full body for style, which i love, thick and luscious. Long lasting hop bitterness in the end. All in all a very nice IPA and better slightly cool( almost room temp) not cold. Impressed, I found the other two beers from thsi brewer acceptable and average. This is rather good. Well done.

Appearance: pours a clear orange color with a one finger head. Some mild lacing develops during the session.

Smell: some floral and earthy hop bitterness rises from the glass.

Taste: caramel, orange, some pear, a bit of earthy tones, and a decent bitterness create a well balanced IPA.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied beer. Lightly crisp from start to finish. Short lasting aftertaste.

Overall: an easy to drink IPA that is tasty and is refreshing. Worthy of a try.

Body is hazy tan with a foamy head that leaves some lacing.

Nose of biscuity malt and grapefruit hops.

Tastes pretty much the same as the nose. Has a pretty bitter finish.

Carbonation is fizzy, and the mouthfeel is crisp and refreshing.

Not a bad IPA, just a pretty average West Coast style IPA.

A: Pours a bubbly orange color, good sized head with great lacing
S: Smell is of biscuty malts and grassy/herbal hops
T: Not much malt maybe a little biscut flavor with herbal tea like aftertaste...very bitter
M: Maybe a little much with the carbonation
O: Not my favorite, could be a lot better with some tweaking to the recipe.

22oz bottle from John's Marketplace.

Pours clear copper with a tight, one inch head. A few dots and streaks of lacing with a thin skim coat on the surface for the duration of the glass.

Aromatics lead off with earthy, grassy hops, a solid malt backbone, and a minerally crispness. Rather subdued for a PacNW IPA, and neither the malt or hops are screaming freshness. Lacking much citrus character, pine, or grapefruit.

Medium bodied with a slightly tacky mouthfeel. Crisp and drying.

Grassy, barklike hops lead off the palate. Chaulk-dusted malt and oaky tannins follow through with a persistant but average bitterness for the style.

Finishes with a quanine like hop bite, lingering drying bitterness, and fairly stale malt.

This one is either bruised up or was never quite that good. Lacking the vibrant hop blast you'de expect from a PacNW IPA.

Appears slightly hazy dark orange. It is very bubbly and has a thin layer of white foam on top.

It smells of grapefruit and grassy, earthy hops. I get a bit of a caramel and bread like malt flavor. Though I like some quality of the smell I get an odd bit of a funky mineral type of bitter smell which is unpleasant.

It tastes of sweet grapefruit. I get a mild nutty and caramel sweet malt taste. I also get a bit of an earthy hop flavor. The taste ends with a substantial bitter flavor. It tastes pretty good it is hop forward but there it is well balanced by a solid malt quality.

The carbonation is moderate high and there is a bit of a crisp mouthfeel.

Overall, it is a pretty tasty IPA though it is a bit rough around the edges.
