No dating. Massive amounts of head from a very gentle pour, looks like shaken up Coke. Unfiltered iced tea look, almost a brown ale. Tons of suspended yeast all throughout. Beige head with tight creamy bubbles after all the froth went down. Scents of cola (is it maybe cause I am thinking of it from the pour?), sasafrass, very crisp. Tons of carbonation, way too much for me. You can barely taste the flavor with all this froth shooting and exploding so champagne-like in your mouth. Makes me think of champagne with a shot of beer dumped into it. Really does not make me think of a porter at all. Bit of coffee, hops, and chocolate in the finish. Speaking of finish, this bottle wasn’t.

Highly carbonated release when opened, pours merely an inch before the glass fills up with light tan foam. Liquid is a hazy chestnut, requires several pours as the head has some staying power. Aroma is sweet, ripe fruits, maybe candy sugar, prunes. Possibly a hint of chocolate malts.

Taste is slightly sour, malt mash, like the beer hasn't finished yet. Traces of cocoa amid the malt, an edge of tangy yeast. Hard to get a direct taste through the fizziness on the tongue.

Smokey, dry aftertaste, some old ale flavors. More semi-sweet green apples in the flavor and the aroma as it warms and the carbonation subsides. Not much depth or character, especially for a porter.

Excessively carbonated, soda-like texture, slightly astringent. Flavors point more toward a brown ale or an old ale than a porter, and one bottled before finishing at that. Not undrinkable but this is the first instance of the actual texture of the beer putting me off and, based on other reviews, more evidence of Great Grains' terrible consistency from batch to batch.

Appearance: Deep mahogony brown with a half-inch tan head that completely vanishes in less than a minute. The carbonation is fairly robust; there is no lacing whatsoever. The sediment is reasonably heavy.

Aroma: Coffee aroma with roasted malt and a tart, sour note that seems out of place.

Taste: Begins with a tart and sweet note, as another reviewer noted, like green apples. Once this off flavor subsides there are some thin coffee and bitter chocolate notes, although quite weak. The finish is dry with some very slight hops.

Mouth feel: Rather thin and watery.

Drinkability/notes: I suspect that this beer cannot reflect the brewer’s intent, it is too far off the mark for the porter style.

Bought this 16 ouncer from an H-E-B supermarket in San Antonio.

Appearance: mahogany brown, quite cloudy (but I can't deduct points for that since it's an unfiltered-unpasteurized beer), tan head depletes quickly to a few sparse bubbles, the cloudiness makes it pretty different for a porter

Aroma: some citrusy hoppiness, a caramelly-roasty malt background, a slight sourness (like an Oud Broun), twinge of molasses and coffee

Flavor: roasty dry malt flavor with an acidity coming in mid-taste, mild hop flavor and an even milder bitterness, finishes dry with a black coffee after-taste, after drinking half of it the coffee-like tartness becomes more and more profound (almost to the point of being over-powering), very dry for a porter

Mouthfeel: fairly light-bodied, light carbonation, dry, A LOT of astringency (my mouth felt like I had been drinking unsweetened iced tea)

I don't know if I'd buy another one, but I might try it on draught or cask if I come across it.

I don't know what the other reviewers were drinking, but it wasn't the same beer I have with me this moment. And if it is as bad as they say it obviously would not be a 1996 Gold Medal Winner at the World Beer Championship(Just my opinion). This Porter pours a beautiful dark brown with a thick and creamy tan head that just won't quit. The taste is quite complex. Smokey malt giving way to the hops only to finish with sweet malt again. There is a distinct pattern to the taste. the nose is subtle with a very good hop nose. This is an excellent porter - Damn Good. I highly recommend this one. Gotta go - The liquor store closes soon and I want more!

According to the label, this beer is dedicated to the Vigilantes who helped to bring justice to the Texas frontier when no other law enforcement was available. It pours a dark copper color with a thin cream-colored head. Both the aroma and taste are dominated by sour apples. Yet again, Great Grains has managed to ruin another beer with their sour apple flavors.
