Originally reviewed on May 22, 2006. Julios Spring Beer Festival. Aroma of feneel and potpourri. Pour of hazed deep golden, rimmed with whisith. Flavor is meak and lightly malty. Hops? They seem severly subdued, to me. A highly buttery malt follows, with copious diacetyl and plenty of biting sock penny resin. Finishes dry, but uninteresting.

So, we're out for dinner after the BBF, and I had this beer. I think it held up rather well after spoiling my palate with all the great Belgians. It was a faintly hazy orange with a medium head and some good lacing. A pleasant citrus/floral aroma. Citrus taste with nice hops bitterness. Fairly robust. I'd drink this beer again.

I've seen this one around a few times, but finally gave it a try because I like the new, snazzed-up label. From a 12 oz. bottle marked "FOR FRESHEST TASTE ENJOY BY OCTOBER". Poured a medium orange with a little bit of lacy head. The smell of hops is present, but not at all overwhelming. Much the same as far as the taste. The hops let you know they are there, but not in an obtrusive way. Nice little bite at the finish as it warms. A smooth, easy to drink IPA. Not something I'm likely to have a craving for, but enjoyable any time.

Drank from a 12 fl. oz. bottle purchased at Cappy's Liquors, Cambridge, MA

Poured a slightly hazy, amber-orange with a two-finger, fluffy, white head that faded to a thin film. Lacing was sticky, moderately intense and lasted throughout the drink.

Smell was rich and hoppy. Punchy cascade hops and grapefruit dominated with some ripe fruits and sweet malts following.

The taste was very hoppy as well, yet smooth and well balanced. Intense floral hops were obvious from start to finish. Juicy, citrusy notes helped make this beer crisp and refreshing.

Full bodied with perfect carbonation.

Easy drinking and refreshing. Pairs well with barbecued foods.

Overall, a terrific IPA that truly distinguishes itself from its counterparts.

Standard 12 oz bottle with white label and lavendar print. Pretty weak bottle design if you ask me. Pours a nice amber color with a very full tannish/white head. Decent lacing in the glass. Lots of bubble activity. Smell is strong and has plenty of citrus kick. Mainly grapefruit. Very crisp and fresh. Taste is mostly of hop and citrus. Quite bitter, but pretty well balanced on the whole. In the mouth Wachusett I.P.A. is full and crisp. A good presence on the palate. Overall this is a fine I.P.A. Extremely pleasant and drinkable. Good brew to drink no matter the season or occasion.

Pours a nice golden, thin head, excellent retention, and lacing. Smell is of citrus, and pine. Body is medium, and slightly carbonated. Taste is smooth, with just the right balance of malt and hops. This is a pleasure from start to finish. Recommended!

Good bitterness with a casing of malt. Enormous head. Good mouthfeel for an IPA and lots of creamy foam at the beginning and end. Golden orange. CItrus aroma and citrus tangerine taste. Very good fish accompaniment. A good refrshment though there are so many IPAs even better out there.

Poured into pint glass.

A: Nice orangey-amber color with thick, off-white head. A little over one finger's worth. Decently carbonated. Left plenty of sticky trails on the glass once it receded.

S: Malty at the front of the nose, with pine and grapefruit toward the back.

T: Fruity and piney with a nice balanced sweetness from the malt. Crisp, dry, nicely bitter finish.

M: Light-bodied, crisp.

D: I remember liking this a lot back when I didn't have much use for IPAs, leading me to believe that it was a mild IPA, or a "gateway" IPA. That's probably true, but I find many high-ranking IPAs to be undrinkably bitter and deliberately imbalanced, so take this review with a grain of salt if you must. Even if it's a gateway IPA, it's still an IPA I can drink a few of. Not a hop bomb, but a good, balanced, drinkable IPA.

12 oz bottle with a "good 'til" date on the side, this one said best before July. Purchased on 8/13/06.

Poured a cloudy, grainy deep golden amber that had a big amount of sediment on the bottom and floating around. It actually turned the thin white head a weird orange color in the middle. It's got plenty of activity happening, no signs of things going bad. I've certainly never seen this much sediment in a 12 oz botle before. The Head had really good retention, creating some mighty fine lacing.

Smells hoppy and slghtly malty with a wheaty, yeasty effect.

The Horrible look of the beer does NOTHING to alter the taste of the beer IMO, It's very bold and hearty dry flowery hop. Semi-bitter, with mild wheaty and yeastyness in the taste. It's really a very mellow hop that goes down very crisp and clean and is really easy to drink.

The sediment and crappy overall look of the beer(It did say best BEFORE July!!) does little to effect the pleasure of the taste or the feel. A strange one here to say the least.

on-tap at Wachusett Brewery

This is the first of their beers that I've ever tried. It pours an nice, amber color with a cumulo nimbus looking froth. It has a nice hop bouquet - one that seemed intense when I lived back in Boston, but now in the land of the West Coast hop monsters seemed subtle. The finish is dry and refreshing.

This is Wachusett's finest.

This is a hazy amber colored IPA with a tall frothy layer of white head. It has good retention and laces well.
The aroma is of citrus and it also has a noticeable grainy smell.
The flavor is surprisingly malty for an IPA. There are grainy tones and the hops are somewhat muted.
Mouth feel is medium in body and moderately carbonated.
This is a decent beer, though it seems to fall short of the average American IPA. It leaves me craving for something with more hops.

Tasting my first offering from this Mass brewer, poured a clear lighter copper, with tight one finger white head that left a ring of lace as it settled slowly.Fruity categorizes the aroma for me tangerine and orange-like hop profile I also pick up some caramel sweetness underneath, very nice coating mouthfeel it glides down easy and is very smooth. This is not a hop bomb just a quaffable moderatly hopped for an IPA ale, that tangerine note in the nose shows up on the palate as well a touch of pine but its not very pronounced a hefty caramel malt base along with a faint buttery finish. This is an IPA to quaff its not over the top in hops (wich I love)but is flavorful and I think would be a good entry level IPA for people who wanna explore into the style, solid.

Probably one of my favorite IPAs right now. have had this in the bottle and at the brewwery and it tastes exactly the same, which is good because I have noticed a difference in their country ale once it hits t he bottle. Great mouthfeel and very decent taste. Would recommend this to anyone from the Bay state, not sure how many other states they actually ship to, I know i have to go over the border to get it.

12 oz brown bottle with a freshness date on the side of the label.

A- Orange amber haze ... completely hazed over. Two fingers of foam subside to a mere bubbly ring of lace that shows minimal head retention.

S- Big citric tone and orange rind hop character in the nose, hint of biscuity malt, nutty yeast and fruity esters in there as well.

T&M- Very smooth with a medium body. Orangey hop profile; juice to rind. Sharp bite of bitterness followed by a chalky yeast then a mild maltiness and faint fruity esters. Finishes with a long lingering bitterness and malt sweetness tail.

D- This is more of your run-of-the-mill Micro Brewery IPA and not very clean at that with the flavors all muddled together. Worth a try but don't expect a hop party in your mouth.

Purchased a six pack from Martignetti's

Appearance = Really nice looking clear honey amber with a ton of bubbles rising upward. Great 3/4'' creamy head that lasted quite awhile. This is a really nice looking beer.

Smell = Pleasant citrus pine smell. Not really memorable but good for an IPA. Citrus flavors dominate from the hops. There's a slight skunky smell that I can't qutie place but this knocks the smell down a bit. I hope this won't factor into the taste.

Taste = This is a really great tasting IPA. It's light but flavorful which leads to exceptional drinkability and would make this a perfect session beer. It's well balanced with a nice malt flavor coming after the hops, which are definitely showcased but not in your face in anyway. Mouthfeel is a little thin which is my only complaint but other than that this beer is great.

Overall = Wachusett did a fine job on this one. I definitely recommend it if you happen to see it somewhere. It's their best offering, along with the blueberry ale. Great, refreshing, tasty IPA that doesn't lack much.

Coler - dark orange/copper color with a 1/2" white head. Head disapates fairly quickly. Lightly carbonated.

Aroma - hops, citrus

Taste - Some malt with a lot of hop bitterness, not much malt body

This is a fairly drinkable beer, kind of a beginner IPA brew but it is fairlyu tasty.

Murky amber with a 2mm head. Some nice lacing remains on the glass. There is some tartness and hints of almond-cherry extract in the smell. Also somewhat bleachy and astringent like. Taste is better than it smells. A dry and crisp IPA. Some good hops that seem fairly balanced and finishes very clean. Drinkability is better than average for the style. A pretty nice local beer.

poured into a mug. let it be known i'm not the biggest fan of this brewery.
pours a quite clear amber/orange color. nice white head.

smells like a lot of sweet malts with a little bit of hops and a little bit of citrus. sweet fruity malt dominates. impressed so far.

taste is very very balanced. sweet malts make up the base with sweet fruit taste and a subtle caramel taste as well. subtle but balancing hops add in their 2 cents. very impressive.

mouthfeel is medium bodied and a touch creamy for an IPA. the hops in this IPA are definitely there but don't take over the beer so much as others in the style. i normally prefer very hoppy ales but this brew is suprisingly good. i could see myself drinking a few. by the way this is the best wachusett brew i have tasted as i am really not fond of the octoberfest or the winter. the blueberry is also way too sweet and artificial tasting. this however, is pretty damn good.

Pours a dark orange/cloudy golden color with a small head--Doesn't have much head retention but leaves great lace. Smells and tastes fruity or citrusy with avery good mouth color. This is a very drinkable beer any time of the year. Wachusett has many great brews and this rates among their best.

Been on an IPA binge lately and found myself another good one--then again, Wachusett Brewing has yet to fail to impress me. Decent amount of foam sitting atop the brownish beer. Nose had some very nice hops coming out--smelled like fresh cut flowers. Hardly a hop bomb, but still got some nice bitters coming from this beer. Nice balance between the malts and the hops. Malts had a slight sweetness at the end but was preceded by a great hop tang on the tip of the tongue. Hops come through again in the finish. Medium body but plenty of staying power with this beer. Split a six-pack with a buddy and wished we had picked up a second.

I'm a big IPA fan, and I've tried a few. This is one of the regular hoppy varieties, not one of those super-hopped types. Nice smooth hoppy taste...traditional and balanced. Tastes very quality clean and pure. I would consider this up there, a bit better than Harpoon and many others....I've had better, but not too many. Basically an awesome drinking beer you could make a regular guest in your fridge any time of year.

Another outstanding beer from the brewers at Wachusett. This is a hefty beer. Taste is nicely balanced between the hops, bitters and the spice that makes IPA's so wonderful. I have had this beer on several occasions in several different serving formats. I guess it's a tribute to the beer, they have all been dramatically different from each other, but all equally as good. This is a great brewery.

Pours a pale golden foamy beauty. Nice head retention Smell of hops right off the bat to my nose. Freshness notch'd twice, once on march, and once on part of the upc. Carbonation is about perfect and again hops are all over this one. Great beer. I try to pick some up when I go up to Mass as its not avail. in CT.

Wachusett IPA
12 oz brown bottle
Freshness date notched for September
Served in a 20 oz tulip pint glass
* Directly from the brewery

Pours a hazy orange brown color with a great fluffy head on top. Spotted sticky lacings cling on the sides of the glass.

The aroma is a combination of hops and zingy citrus scents.

This is a very sweet and hoppy IPA. Grainy and sweet from the malts, but overall most of the attention must be given to the sharp hop flavors. Citrusy and biting, the hop presence in this beer is at the forefront.

One of the better session IPA's in this market if you can find it fresh. The brewers at Wachusett did a good job on this one. Credit must be given.

A: Orange/amber appearance. Thin white lace.

S: Hops, Hops, Hops. A little fruit and malt. Clearly, this is an IPA.

T: Hops and grapefruit are the first flavors that jump out at me. I could have this for breakfast. The malt starts to peek through at the end, but the hops stay right there with it. Manages to stay fairly balanced with all the hop flavors jumping around. Actually, it finishes quite smooth and clean.

M: Medium bodied with a good amount of carbonation. Crisp and slightly coarse.

D: This is one of my favorites. Not as big as some of the newer IPA's, but, it doesn't have to be with all the flavor going on here. A very solid and flavorful beer. Good for a session, too.
