A: Poured from the bottle into a pint glass. Body is black, with a big (2-finger) bubbly, chocolate-tan colored head that settles to leave a thick collar of lace up top.

S: Chocolatey and fruity - surprisingly fruity, in fact, as I expected some char/charcoal and/or some smoke/ash, but mainly I'm getting fruit and chocolate, with the chocolate becoming more pronounced as it warms.

T: Roasted barley malt and roasted coffee bean foundation. Some charcoal, a good amount of chocolate. Finishes with slightly metallic bitterness, but the lingering aftertaste is mostly chocolate - milk chocolate - with a wee bit of heat from the 10% ABV. That ABV warmth is felt in the belly after a few sips. Quite good.

M: Seemed a bit thin at first, but after a few sips I got adjusted to it and it seemed more creamy in feel and medium in heft.

O: Solid. Drinks way too fast for a beer that's 10% ABV.

On tap. Looks like a hearty cola. Nice amount of lacing around the edges of the glass.

Smell is a bit sweet and fruity surprisingly. Tad bit of smoke and toasted malt.

Taste follows up on the nose. Definite warm cherry chocolate. Slight woody smokiness at the end which blends with the dark malt to produce a bitter coffee feel as well. Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy. Medium to full bodied. 10% melds into this one nicely.

It's my first smoked porter so I was expecting more smoke but regardless of what this one is called it was quite enjoyable.

No bottle date, poured into a snifter

A- pours a very dark brownish black with on light creeping through, small foamy light tan head reduces quickly, leaving no lace behind

S- chocolaty malt with some slightly smoky notes, but not as much as expected for a smoked beer. Plenty of fruity notes with a berry-like sweetness, a hint of bitter coffee at the end

T- the fruity notes continue into the taste as well; mixed berries with a with dark cherry juice near the finish. The chocolaty malt provides a creamy sweetness, the smoke is barely detectable, not even picking up any charcoal/ashy notes. Some medicinal hoppy flavors on the finish with more of that cherry juice

M- medium body with medium foamy carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel and finish, alcohol is barely detectable for a 10% beer

O- this is a tasty porter, but I have no idea how it's called a smoked beer. I was expecting those smoky, meaty peat flavors, but this was actually quite sweet. It's a good beer, but not what you want if you're looking for a smoky beer

Mendocino Talon Double Smoked Porter has a very thick, soapy, beige head, a dark brown, with red highlights, appearance, and significant lacing blobs left behind on the glass. The aroma is rich and of dark-roasted malt, subtle smoke, and some acidity. Taste is also rich, and one will pick up exquisite, bready, sweet malt, underlying, yet mild, smoke, black cherries, bread crust, and sugar. Hop bitterness is low, but you might detect some char bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium to heavy and velvety, and Mendocino Talon Double Smoked Porter finishes semi-wet and not unlike chocolate cake frosting.

22 ounce bottle into snifter; no bottle dating, but is a very recent release. Pours fairly pitch black color with a 2 finger dense tan head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, caramel, toast, wood smoke, coffee, herbal, floral, light pine, and roasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good complexity and balance of dark/roasted malt, smoke, and moderate earthy hop notes; with good strength. Taste of chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, caramel, toast, wood smoke, light coffee, herbal, floral, light pine, and roasted earthiness. Fair amount of earthy herbal/pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, caramel, toast, wood smoke, herbal, floral, light pine, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice balance, complexity, and robustness of dark/roasted malt, smoke, and moderate earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a moderately creamy, smooth, and slightly chalky mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice smoked imperial porter. All around good complexity and balance of dark/roasted malt, smoke, and moderate earthy hop flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

A - Nice dark color, though rather light for a porter. Was expecting something dimmer.

S - Interesting smell. Did remind me of the smoky quality advertised.

T - Wasn't a fan. Definitely had an odd taste, paired with the high ABV, made the taste off for me. Lacked the classic porter taste.

M - Tough to gulp down.

O - Not sure if I'd get it again. Appreciate the Mendocino, but wasn't a fan of this particular brew.
