Virtually pitch black with a tin bubbly light brown lace.

Creamy malt sweetness is shunned away by a semi acrid roasted malt smell. Suggestions of coffee and charcoal come to mind.

Loose medium body with a moderate carbonation that lacks crispness and smoothness. Roasted malt flavour is a bit narrow and sticks with the sweetness to lay down faint chocolate and burnt flavours. Mild earthy tones from the malt and yeast come through towards the end with a small acrid like taste also. Finishes on the dry side with more earthy tones.

A decent stout, nothing special … just a well rounded stout that lacks bit of character.

4/5  rDev +13.6%

Presentation: 12oz brown bottle. No freshness date.

Appearance: Pitch black in the glass with a massive rocky tan foam head.

Smell: Blackstrap molasses, dark fruits, rich-deep caramel/toffee, coffee with a delicate hop bouquet. I also get a clean "milky" aroma too.

Taste: Active level of carbonation that induces a creamy and refreshing mouthfeel. Body is full and even. Initial flavour is a limey hop character that races along the palate with a slightly dry pucker and bite. It fades into a robust roasted astringency, then melds with an earthy black malt flavour. Other malt flavours include burnt, raisin, black liquorice and a touch of sweet caramel and chocolate. Finish is dry, clean for all that's going on, with some grain in the back.

Notes: Black Hawk Stout one helluva stout, and another top-notch beer from Mendocino. Quite complex and what you'd also expect from Mendocino. Most definitely give it a try.

The Black Hawk stout...has a great name #1...as in the #1 hockey team in the NHL...but is also a solid stout. The beer pours an opaque black with thin slightly offwhite head that is leaving a spotty lace. The scent carries chocolate and peat. The taste is more leaning towards espresso. The mouthfeel is fuller in body with smooth carbonation. Overall this is a solid beer.

App: moderate head, of deep black "stouty" color, and sweet bouquet in pint

Entree: impactful mouthful, with unwanting - unpleasant lingering aftertaste

Dessert: not tasteless, but not really taste full. Again, not eloquent in defining hints of this and that (not a judge, just a critique sampling the many offerings and commenting accordingly--since looking for holy grails of a variety).

Not crave / repeat worthy.

Deepest black color with a thick caramel head with good retention and leaving lots of laces.
Aroma of coffee, a touch of smoked malt and dark chocolate.
Flavor of earthy and citrusy hops, roasted coffee beans, dark chocolate powder, charcoal, pepper and licorice.
Very dry aftertaste with a long lingering bitter roasted coffee notes.
Light to medium body with perfect carbonation.
Assertive beer, but quite flavorful and very enjoyable. In my opinion it is under rated, and definitely I would drink this over Guinness.
