Hell of a find at my local Trader Joe's, had to go back for more. Very good tasting and strong Imperial Ale. Hits harder than any other 8% abv beer I've tried. (159 characters)

Simply 1 of the best. I told a friend, "this is the only beer I've found that will give me a buzz after drinking just one 12 ounce bottle" ... he knew exactly what I meant... then we drank 3 and stayed home for a while (219 characters)

Slightly hazy amber copper color with a thin dark beige head with short retention.
Aroma with notes of caramel, orange jelly, apple puree, herbal hops and some pine.
Flavor with notes of caramel malt, molasses, pine, overripe oranges, floral and citrus hops and Brazilian pequi fruit. Quite dry and bitter aftertaste.
Medium towards full body with appropriate carbonation. Alcohol of 8% abv is well inserted.
This Strong American Ale has a nice hoppines, but I was expecting a bigger malt or fruit complexity. If you don’t attain to details you risk to say it is a fancy malt liquor. Still it is an interesting brew, and if you like hops, caramel and jam, here you find a match. (680 characters)

Eye of the Hawk is quite undervalued in my opinion. It is a terrific malty, just hoppy enough strong ale. Mouthful is great. More of a warm weather sipper, it can be enjoyed all year round. And I can buy a sixer for under 8 bucks. Outstanding. (243 characters)

This beer is honestly one of my favorite beers of all time. It is a very deep and rich American Strong Ale that is full of malty flavor and thick mouthfeel. Not too much hops on the front of back and it finishes sweet. It is a definitely good beer in my opinion. (265 characters)

Pours a clear deep reddish amber producing 2 fingers of soap foam frothy, beige, somewhat lasting head that leaves a only a little lacing. Aroma is sweet with toasted malts, treacle, nuts & a hint of raisin backed a thin hint of floral hops. Taste is sweet but less so than in the nose, caramel, roast, nuts & raisin. Finish is toast, roast & metallic with some hop character in the form of a nice bitterness that's accentuated by the alcohol & intense roast. Aftertaste is metallic, lightly bitter & astringent. Alcohol presence is low for the ABV but is present in the form of bitterness and spice. Mouthfeel is medium-full bodied with moderate carbonation, some spicy prickle, wet, slick & astringent in the aftertaste. (722 characters)

12 oz bottle from the beer of the month club...

Pours a cloudy orange-brown, with a slightly off white 3/4 inch head. Decent lacing.

Smells are not overly prominent, but what I do smell is mainly malts . Primarily a sweet applesauce smell.

Taste has the sweet malts out in front. A heavy alcohol taste in the middle and a (very) slight bitter hop finish

Feel is crisp and full

Over all an interesting malt forward (but still an ale) sort of beer.
And of course the 8.0 ABV doesn't hurt either !! (502 characters)

Poured cold from bottle to pub style pint glass. Color is a dark reddish Amber. Has about a one inch head of white foam that seems to be sticking around (I'm drinking it while reviewing). Strong taste of malt and caramel. I got this beer as part of a build your own six pack at the liquor store. I love to try new beers, and hadn't heard of this one, so I thought, for $1.60 it can't hurt to try it. It was money well spent. I am enjoying this beer, and would drink it again any time. Can't believe it's 8% AVB! (511 characters)

An old friend from when I lived in Mendocino/ Humboldt. This has a very thick mouth feel and hides its alcohol well. A very malty, caramel-like taste that is quite unique. I love it's color. (190 characters)

Very strong malt flavor some hops to back it up but overall very malt forward. Lots of caramel and bready/ biscuit notes . Very full bodied beer much richer than I would anticipate based on the color. (200 characters)

Eye of the Hawk boasts an amazing 8.0% ABV, but you wouldn't know that from the taste.

Head-lovers and carbonation-aficionados beware! This is a rich, no-frills ale.

Poured cold, even as sloppy as you can, creates the smallest head with light lacing. (Poured warm, on the other hand, and this one comes alive).

Drank cold, it's malty with a touch of hops. It's rich, sweet, bordering almost on a Baltic porter without molasses and darkness.

It's my favorite beer because it brings no nonsense with its flavor, and it doesn't make you pay with burps and air in your stomach. Highly recommended. (601 characters)

Eye of the Hawk pours a red-brown with a big two-finger head which dissipates quickly leaving a thin white cap. Not a whole bunch going on in the flavor department. A quite strong caramel/malt flavor which masks the high ABV quite well. Almost a medicinal malt flavor. Aroma is strongly malt based. Not a well balanced malt flavor but not bad. I first tried it at the 2011 Minnesota Autumn Brew Review. The brewery rep gave my uncle and I a bottle under the table and was quite personable. Left a good impression of Mendicino Brewing for me. I'd drink this again and would be interested in trying some more of their offerings. (635 characters)

This is a very decent brew. With the hefty 8% abv that isn’t detectable. The light mouthfeel is a throw off of some of the flavors that shine through. This reminds me of what a candy beer would be. Almost like a medicinal fruit syrup followed by bready malt and slight hoppy finish. Though nothing screams excellence, this brew is still worthy. (346 characters)

Appearance - clear copper color with beige head

Smell - molasses, caramel, oak

Taste - molasses, caramel, oak, nuts

Mouthfeel - medium bodied, medium carbonation, not much complexity to the flavor

Overall - nothing wrong with this beer, but nothing about it was particularly memorable either. Fans of the style might want to give it a shot

Price Point - $2.25/12 oz bottle (378 characters)

Smell has a lot of bready malt. Some sweetness. A little bit of alcohol boozyness underlying.

Flavor has the bready Malta as well along with a strong fruity sweetness. Fairly dry bitter finish, along with a boozyness that is a little high for an 8%.

Overall pretty good, kind of flat though, a little more carbonation would have brought me up to a 4. A little too sweet and boozy for me to go any higher than that, but still a good beer. (441 characters)

Pours a cloudy orangey-red with a creamier white head that has minor retention but leaves a little lacing. The aroma is mild, with only some nondescript malt sweetness. The taste has a little more oomph, as there are some nice dark fruit notes and dark bread malt flavors. The body has a nice weight to it, with a smooth finish. (329 characters)

Mendocino Eye of the Hawk has a thin, cream-colored head, a murky, copper appearance, strong bubble streams, and very little lacing left behind. The aroma is of pungent, rich, sweet, spiced bread, and dark bread crust. Taste is of sugar, caramel, dark bread crust, light fruits (dates or figs), some bitterness, and noticeable alcohol. Mouthfeel is medium to heavy, and Mendocino Eye of the Hawk finishes wet, sweet, and heavy.

Pours a fairly clear deep copper, with a foamy khaki head that dissipates fairly quickly to a thin layer of foam.

Sweet caramel malt and floral hops form the initial aroma. Smells like treacle. Slightly nutty notes emerge.

Flavor is also sweet, with toffee notes emerging mid palate, carrying into a light citrus, moderately dry finish. Caramel malt dominates, but the citrus prevents the beer from being cloying.

Body is fairly thick, with moderate carbonation and noted alcohol warmth.

Malt dominant, and not the most complex strong ale, but it's got enough citrus and bittering hops to redeem it somewhat. (612 characters)

This beer pours a darker amber color with minimal head. The smell is sweeter and nutty. The beer is not really that sweet in taste and has an interesting flavor profile of nutty brown and some roasted barley. At 8% ABV, this beer sells a lot cheaper than beers in the same ABV range.
I really liked the taste when it first hits your mouth. There was a hint of something metallic in the aftertaste, but like an earthy metallic, not like an old tin can. The aftertaste kept me from giving this beer a higher rating, but overall, I really enjoyed it. I will keep some at home. This would go well with any foods cooked on the grill, especially a good burger. (655 characters)

This has been one of my favorites for a while now. The coppery red brew looks irresistible when poured into a pint glass. Warm or chilled, this particular beer delivers a excellent taste with hints of malted barely.
This is a great hoppy beer. I especially like how the brewers managed to create a beer with 8 percent alc content without the overwhelming taste of the alcohol.
I would recommend this to a friend. Also a great recommendation to anyone looking for a nice, hoppy beer or one with an above average alcohol content. (528 characters)

It pours dark amber and cloudy like a thunderstorm, with lacings and an off white foamy head, that dissapates well. It has a caramal malt aroma, a pleasent taste of caramal/malt, with a twinge of metal taste and spikes of hops and pie crusts. It has bit of an edge when drink, but goes down well, and isn't to feeling. (318 characters)

A mildly clouded pale orange brew sits in my glass, activity from the pour swirling heavily to form a solid head, creamy in substance, that achieves a full finger and rests there easily, nearly keeping its full height for the whole of the session as it drops sticky patching.
Lots of dark fruits notes with a sweetness that isn't too sugary, a hint of alcohol that isn't too boozy that plays well, a touch of leaf, a bit of caramel, bread, and a bit of grains in the finish make for a full, fairly rich and nicely complex beer. A bit more (not very much) on the hoppy side in the aroma would have added an extra dimension. The flavor brings a bit more with further integration and some linger in the finish.
This beer is bready in the feel, not too thick but with a combination of "moist," sweet and dry that works well in its medium body. (839 characters)

The Eye of the Hawk is much better than I anticipated. The beer poured a slightly a hazy copper with thin white head that is leaving a lace. The scent is sweet with biscuit like malt. The taste is a well balanced strong ale like semi sweet bread. The mouthfeel is fuller in body with good carbonation. Overall....possibly one of the better strong ales I've had...given that I am not a strong ale fan. (400 characters)

A - 4.25 - Beautiful amber color that I really can't deny. Clear as day, nice white head that dissipates and leaves great lacing when it does.
S - 4 - It smells like vanilla, coconut, hint of floral hops/soap. The smell as a whole is very mild though.
T - 4 - mild vanilla, caramel, bready flavor. Some undefined hop bitterness balances it out.
M - 4 - medium mouthfeel. It's pretty full bodied for the way it looks. Alc is covered nicely at 8%. The aftertaste is a sweet caramel/bitter hop.
O - 4 - It's nothing amazing, I just can't find anything that's really wrong with it. It's got a nice sweet/creamy taste from the malt, which is almost perfectly balanced by the hops, there's just not much complexity. I guess that's what it is: It's a very simple american strong ale that's light on the hops. I honestly kinda like it, and would probably buy it again, especially for the price:ABV ratio. (899 characters)

Quite the let down. Threw a few Eye of the Hawks into a make your own 6 pack from my local, and I could not finish the first one and poured out the remaining two. Tasted like soap at times and even my wife agreed it was not worth drinking. I love almost any craft beer, and am enjoying a Mt. Saint Helena Palisades Pale Ale right now, so I am not sure what went wrong with the Eye of the Hawk, it seemed to have a bland taste with no distinctive aroma whatsoever, and the occasional aforementioned soap taste. (509 characters)
