English India Pale Ale (IPA) |  ABV ?

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
Soft and pure New England water, appropriate for an American IPA style, complements the malt and hop ingredients drawn from the best products of England, Germany and the Pacific Northwestern U.S. The malt bill includes English 2-row Pale Ale Barley Malt, English Crystal Malt, German Munich Malt, and Chocolate Barley Malt. Hops feature Nugget and Willamette. The famous lively Ringwood culture, (a top-fermenting “ale” yeast), ferments the beer.

This is "brewed and bottled for Shipyard," and these guys make Tremont, which is one of the least appealing beers I've had. This one, though, suffers from not knowing what it is. BA calls it an English IPA but the bottle has it as straight up IPA. BA knows the style better than the brewers, apparently, because this is an English-style bitter-type thing more than an IPA. Drank with this in mind, this is not bad. Thinking of it as an IPA will make you...not love it. But for fans of English bitter pales, this might work pretty well.

I was very disappointed with this beer. It's not so much that it's a bad beer. But there is no way I would ever consider this an IPA. It is very sweet and nutty. I couldn't taste any hops at all. If that's the kind of beer you like, then give it a try. But if you want an IPA (like i did) then you will be very disappointed.

A-Pours very clear. Dark amber. Head grows and dies. It laces very nicely. It leaves rings and dots. Dark for the style.

S-Really? Smells nothing like an IPA. If someone asked me what this was just by smell I would never reply "Oh yeah bro, that is an India Pale Ale". Caramel and apple juice. No hops. Just a ton of sweetness.

T-To be quite honest this tastes like a Brown Ale or a very malty English Bitter. To b e honest again, it truly is not that bad; it just is not an IPA in my mind. It's not even close. Yes I know its labeled on BA as an English IPA, but please… I guess I can detect some tea-like hop flavors? A bit nutty. Very malty.

M-Medium bodied. Medium carbonation. Slightest bitterness. Drinks easy enough.

O/D-I don't really have too much of a problem with the beer, I have a problem with this company labeling it an IPA when it isn't. Hey, it's not as bad as Tailgate IPA. So at least they have that.

This poured out as a reddish copper color with a white head on top. The head laced the glass pretty well with a decent retention. The smell of the beer was more malty than hoppy, probably just the type of hops they used. The taste of the beer was on the bitter side but still held that malty earth flavors. The mouthfeel of the beer was dry and light bodied. Overall it's not my favorite IPA but I am pleased that I got to try it.

Got this at a recent beer event. 12oz bottle, best before December 2011...

A: A perfectly clear super deep ruby red with a small off-white head that fades quickly to small bubbles atop the brew. Ok.

S: A get some sweet malt upfront immediately drowned by an overwhelming apple scent. Some faint rye on the backend. Decent.

T: A rye upfront with an apple taste to follow. A malty finish. This is labeled an IPA? This is a pale ale, not an IPA. Hartford Better Beer, learn you beer styles. Eh.

M: Light body with a heavy carbonation. A malty finish. Decent.

O: All in all, this is not an IPA. The brewpub really needs to rethink their genre choice for this brew. Do not try this if you are an IPA fan. This will disappoint. A nice pale ale is where this would do very well. This would do well as a Rye Pale Ale.

picked up a couple of single bottle IPAs the other day that i hadn't heard of. this was one of those...

as others have already said. this isn't an IPA at all.

color is nice, head dissipates pretty quickly.

no aroma, definitely no hops on the nose, not even really any hops in the taste, either.

i agree on the strange aftertaste.

luckily i only bought one bottle.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a tasting glass.

A: Pours a copperish color with a small head that leaves a decent lacing.

S: This is not an IPA. The hoppinator? I don't smell any hops. Acually I don't smell anything. Strange...

T: Nope, no hops. I don't think there's a single molecule of hops in this beer. There's a slight malty sweetness up front followed but a strange twangy metallic sourness on the finish. Weird and kinda gross.

M: Very watery.

D: Do not drink this beer. There's nothing redeeming about this beer. It's a watery, hopless mess. An almost guaranteed drain pour.

Bought a 6pk of this. Regretting it. Freshness date of Jan 2011 so fresh should not be a problem. Bought, poured, consumed and reviewed 12/22/10.

A: Pours a dark dark orange, medium brown with a one finger head, some lacing.

S: Where are the hops? This is an IPA right? Slightly fruity aroma, but nothing strong.

T: Borderline undrinkable. Seriously questioning whether it's infected. There is a VERY strong medicinal taste to this IPA that definitely shouldn't be there. Other than that, no taste.

M: I wish I can keep it in my mouth long enough to judge.

D: Seriously, a painful experience. I will try the rest of my six pack, but I'm not expecting anything to improve.

Comments: If I didn't own 5 more, I wouldn't drink it again.

Pours dark copper almost brown. Light off white head that fades very quick.

Smells like a lager, has no hop note at all.

Tastes like the most watered down IPA I've ever had thus far in my 5 years of being a craft beer lover.

The flavors are very faint, scarce waterty malts. The only thing that is present in the beer is a decent hop bitterness, but no real flavoring to go along with it.

The mouthfeel is poor. Poorly carbonated.. and very watery.

This bottle is a drain pour. I'm going to at least crack the rest of the 6 pack and check for any variance. If they're the same as this one, they will be coating the piping of my kitchen sink as well.

New local beer! Yay!!

A: Beautiful dark amber or copper color, really right up against the upper limit of what you might expect from an IPA. Nice and clear, with a fairly small head that endures simply as a ring around the edge of the glass for the duration of the drinking of the beer.

S: No hop aroma, which is what I really look for in an IPA. Really heavy on the Ringwood yeast with loads of toffee and butterscotch. IMO could benefit from some dry hopping.

T: Good flavor. Starts out with plenty of the toffee and butterscotch as implied by the aroma, and perhaps a malty flavor. Then the hops bitterness kicks in, right at a good middle-of-the-road level. Just right for an English IPA like this. The hop flavor is earthy to me.

M: Just fine. Bubbles numb the tongue a bit. Thickness is subtle. Neither offensive nor impressive.

D: Again, just fine. After the first I needed a break, but then after a different beer I was ready for more. I could easily choose this over something like Sam Adams Boston Lager all night, if I could imagine actually finding it available at a bar around here.

Also known as the Hoppinator.. seems to be a new offering, just popped up at a store in West Hartford I stopped at for some weekend beer. Nice copper color to it.. not much head or much of an aroma though. Taste is more balanced than the usual IPA, no extreme hop bitterness here. Definitely an English version and not American one, due to it being subdued. Reminds me a lot of Brooklyn's East India Pale Ale... solid beer, nice mouthfeel and pretty drinkable but the taste is a bit boring for me... hopefully we'll see some more beers from this upstart brewery.

12 ounce bottle, w/ "best enjoyed before" info notched onto the side of the label, nice. (09/2010 here) Pours darker amber, and fairly clear, moderate light khaki head, that leaves a thin collar and fine spotty lacing. Thin nose of grainy hops. Smooth and tasty, malt underbelly announces the British feeling of this brew. Hops fairly subdued, but making there presence know in a non crunching manner. Balanced IPA, easy drinker and a nice new offering from Hartford Better Beer/Shipyard Brewing.
