I go to K&L frequently, usually to purchase spirits of which they have one of the better selections in Southern California for reasonable prices (bourbon, single malt, absinthe, cordials, tequila/mezcal, rum, etc).

The Hollywood location (very clean, well organized, well lit) itself has only a small double-door cooler towards the back, with maybe a dozen beers inside. The selection is tiny but decent (Port Brewing, Alesmith, Lost Abbey, Avery, Russian River, Dogfish Head, etc.) though not exceptional.

A portion of the case is wasted space (import macros).

The thing is, they have a lot in back that isn't in that cooler, and even better, they will transfer what they have in their Redwood City location to Hollywood for you to pick up at no charge. This may not be as convenient as a trip to one of the better beer stores in L.A., but I find it worth taking advantage of.

The selection at the Redwood City location/warehouse is impressive and has some beers I've almost never seen anywhere else in SoCal (Brooklyn Brewery, Jolly Pumpkin, Farnum Hill, limited releases from Allagash, Deschutes, Hair of the Dog, etc), as well as plenty of good ales from Belgium, Denmark, Japan, England, Germany, etc.

Prices vary from very reasonable (Stone, Alesmith) to a bit high (most of their East Coast offerings).

Staff at Hollywood is very friendly but never pushy. Helpful, but not at all snobbish. They tend to remember repeat customers. That said, while they appear genuinely interested in everything they sell, I have received a lot of misinformation here as well, so they are not all as knowledgeable as they may seem.

They are just getting back into the swing of things with beer, so I may edit this review to say a little more about the quality of the beer itself once I have ordered more from them (especially Belgian and East Coast brews).

I went here recently to pick up some Struise stuff I have been looking for. Atmosphere is of a smaller wine store that has a small selection of liquor and beer. The quality of everything is good. All the beers that needed to be refrigerated (IPAs and whatnot) were in coolers. The service was good. An employee greeted me and showed me where the beer was. They have a somewhat small selection of beer but what the have is top notch. De Struise, Nogne O, Midnight Sun, and so on. Prices are reasonable for the selection they stock. A good place to visit.

They have a great selection of wines, beers, and spirits to choose from. If they have something in inventory at another location they can have it sent down free of charge.

Obviously I am more of a beer drinker and they have an extensive collection on their website although it's not always represented on the showroom floor.

They host beer events quite frequently.Talk to Steve and he will hook you up. Also make sure to join their e-mail list to get the heads up of what is coming to the store.

New and revised 12/05/09:

I've left my initial review below, since it was/is accurate. HOWEVER, I must totally re-evalutate the K&L since the service and selection and customer care has been exemplary.
Someone from K&L contacted me and told me that the Redwood City store had far more beer and that I could get whatever I wanted shipped to the Hollywood store.

I've now used this service at least three times. I get some great beer and fantastic service. There is no charge for the shipping and I am getting some very good beer at decent prices. Clearly, K&L is first rate for beer in service and selection concerning Redwood City. I must upgrade Hollywood since they are taking very good care of me despite a modest selection actually in the store.

I very much like the Hollywood store and most of the staff is wonderful. (One guy is kind of a jerk...but,...hey,...there's always one!) Most are fantastic.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:
K&L is a well known and established wine merchant. My background is in wine (consumer, writer, judge etc. for over 35 years). Thus, I've heard of this place and used it "out of state" for years. K&L is relatively new to Los Angeles, having only opened the past couple of years. And, their wine selection is impressive in the store and, they can probably get you just about anything you want from their other stores or inventory.

HOWEVER, based on the quantity and selection of beer that the Los Angeles store carries, they shouldn't even bother; it's an insult.

There is one small, narrow cooler in the back of the store with a very small selection of beer. When I say small, I mean you're better off at a decent 7-11. I saw perhaps a selection of a couple of dozen, at best, of the most mundane and "C average" beers available. Again, I hate slamming a really good wine store. But, K&L should just not carry beer at all for the selection they have; it's an insult to a beer drinker and would just alienate him/her from any further visits. I'd be happier if they didn't carry beer at all.

There were a couple of decent Belgians (Chimay blue being the best beer in the cooler) and a few American, English and Germans. Only the basics. Candidly, it's as if the entire beer idea was a very great and late afterthought.

Need a nice bottle of wine? Try K&L. Need a good bottle of beer? Don't stop in!

Perhaps with the economy and rise in beer popularity things may change. K&L has the national presence and the talent. Now, they just need the interest and they could really be a top place with their presence and reputation. Let's hope that K&L starts to take beer seriously!
