neighborhood bar for me. have around 30 taps, all quality craft. typically weighted toward hoppier and higher abv beers. fairly priced, good food, but its not quick when busy. limited inside seating, but tons outside. fun, laid back vibe. my favorite place to drink in houston.

a few extra notes if you havent visited:
-there is no waitstaff. order beers and food at the bar. your food will be delivered to your table, however.
-no dogs. kids are allowed, but you dont see them too often.
-no tvs
-no darts, bar games. (519 characters)

Houston might not have the best reputation as an exciting to city to visit. But places like Petrol Station make it worthwhile to at least stop by for a pint and grub. Excellent beer selection and an amazing kitchen make me come back time and again. The bar staff is highly knowledgeable and passionate about their brews. The cooks in the kitchen also create amazing dishes to go with just about any beer on tap. (411 characters)

Finally went to a great craft beer bar in Houston and it felt like home nestled in a neighborhood. First walking in the had seats all around and rustic tables filled the rest of the space. Big size beer garden along with seating out front. If I lived near here I would be here everyday. The service was outstanding and the selection was expansive. The door to the cooler was filled with tap handles, a chalkboard around it with the food menu. Recommend the Duck Tacos BAM!! I had no idea about this place till a fellow advocate suggested we meet there for a trade.

Great Beer, Great Food, Great people (bartenders & customers) Great Place!!! (643 characters)

My favorite craft beer place to hit in Houston.

Went to their 4th Anniversary.. what a great job they did there.. so many great and hard to find beers. One of the best beer days I've had. 512 BB Pecan Porter... enough said there... oh yeah.. old Rasputin from 2010... Saint Arnold BB1 and Pumpkinator.. beers from Lagunitas, DFH, Stone, Real Ale and so many others...

The Rancor Burger is fantastic.. as are the fries.. add some parmesan cheese or truffle oil.

Taps rotate all the time which is awesome. They always have two or three beers I haven't had before it seems.

If you are in Houston, hit this place up. (616 characters)

Had a couple hours to spare before my flight and was fortunate enough to be in the same neighborhood of this little gem.

As with many of the icehouse bars in houston, this one is very subdued in appearance and atmosphere. Small on the inside but with a ton of outdoor seating.

Not an overly large selection of beers, but a nicely balanced one. They had selections from DFH, Ommegang and many others.

Service was excellent. The bartender and waitress were both extremely friendly and knowledgeable.

Clientele was a mix young and old. Not very packed, but it was sunday afternoon. I understand from the bartender that thurs-sat nights are crazy.

Had already eaten, so I didn't try the food. But the duck tacos looked very intriguing.

Will definitely stop in again on my next trip to Houston. (800 characters)

My friend has been a regular at this place for a few years, and he has always tried to get me to go there with him. I finally did, and I was not disappointed at all. The atmosphere in this place was awesome, and they have a lot on tap. Not as much as Flying Saucer, but they had more than I needed, and had one of my favorite IPAs on tap. Bartenders are great, and will suggest beers to you based on your preferences. I would frequent this place if I lived closer, but I will go as often as I can.

The food is excellent as well, you wouldn't expect it walking into the place as it is like a dive bar. I would suggest the burgers to anyone. (640 characters)

Stopped by this place at to meet up with trading buddy and brother from another mother lnashsig on my recent trip back home to houston.

Quaint place stashed away off a few side roads near Ella Blvd in North Houston. Had the urge to drive past it, looks like a dive from the outisde, lol.

Around 7pm on a Friday, people were bustling enjoying themselves but not crowed at all. ~10 seats at the bar, ~ 6 large picnic style tables inside, and large back patio. Didnt count the taps but more than 30 and all styles with about 2/3rds being all texas micros. 512, Independence, St. Arnold, east and west coast goodies and all different styles. I couldnt remember them all but this is definitely the type of place that you wont be able to try everything you'd like in one sitting. Since I was a visitor, everything on tap may not have been impressive to the regulars but this seems like the place to get rare releases as well.

Shared CBS, Older Viscocity 2008, Zhukov 2011, Kuhnhenn Bourbon Braggot etc with the staff and the head guy Troy is an awsome guy. Sharing is encouraged and rewarded. Oh and my round of beers were 12$ and I'm not talking about Natty Light, incredible to pay 3$ for top notch beer considering what I pay in NYC/NJ.

Burger I had was no joke as well.

Oh an all the workers there have awsome beards, like a secret beer cult.

I wish there were more places in my new home like this one in my old home. Highly reccommended and definitely better than GingerMan Houston just on selection alone. (1,512 characters)

I wish that the Petrol Station was closer to me, but it might be a good thing, because I don't think I'd ever leave.

The Petrol Station is a pretty solid place. Starting off as a coffee station/bar, this place has definitely became a solid beer stop in Houston. The selection of beers they get is always of high quality, and it seems like they're always getting something good in. Some nights if you show up at peek times, it can take a little while to get your food and drinks, but it is well worth it. Get a 512 pecan porter with a Rancor burger, and you can call it a night. The collection of spent bottles they have stashed lets you know that these doods definitely know/give a shit about beer. The beer is reasonable, but the quality of food, you will be paying for. I've only had the burgers there, and they are not something to fuck with. Get them like the menu says, and its well worth the price.

As was stated, if I lived closer, I would be there constantly. Good thing it sits right in the middle of a neighborhood.. (1,028 characters)

located in a quaint neighborhood just north of the loop. very chill atmosphere, great beer selection, great food... the hungry hippy is the bomb. nice large front and back patios, with little indoor seating. very "layed back" staff and crowd, but very serious about craft beer and the selections available. 35 revolving taps of nothing but the best craft beer available in texas. prices cannot be beat... most pints are $4 or $6 and $4 beers go down to $3 for happy hour. happy hour allday on mondays (500 characters)

Right in my back yard, I can walk there!

Sadly, they were way cooler when no one knew this place existed. Now it's perpetually packed from the bar to the door, spilling over into the outside facilities.

But they carry some really, really good beers on tap. And the bartender always knows the beer and can informatively tell you what you're drinking, what it's like, and all that. The draft beers range from things you'll get at every bar in town to select craft beers to limited craft beers you probably can't find anywhere else. If you're a beer geek -- and you are if you're reading this -- it's a worthwhile, must-see visit. (630 characters)

located pretty much in a neighborhood and out of the way of everything else. anyway they have a such a relaxed atmosphere which is always refreshing. i love how frequently they rotate the taps thats what i think is their cash cow.

the bartenders are very helpful, and extremely nice i will say i have been talked down to once before which was not cool but i'll let it slide, other than that everyone is very friendly and informative.

i love the food more than the beer, almost everything i have had has been amazing, even for a beer drinking health freak like myself (yes i know what i said) they have food that i can have and not regret it the next day.

everything is priced typically and reasonable, ill go every chance i get and recommend others do the same if they want a great beer/food experience. (809 characters)

Great small neighboehood pub in the heights area. I am from dallas, but my sister lives a few blocks away and I visit every time I am in town.

Great atmosphere, really laid back. A bit small on the inside but they do have plenty of tables in the backyard and some front patio seating.

Probably 10-15 rotating taps so there is usually soomehting new to try. Beer is always fresh because they don't have too many taps at a time. Great locals and seasonals. Focus is mainly on craft brews but you can get wine for someone who doesn't like beer. Great food even though it takes awhile to recieve your order. Service can be slow, but it gets fairly crowded in the evenings. The folks who run the bar are very knowlegeable and friendly.

Overall a really great place to hang out in a low key environment with good friends. Good people, chill atmosphere, and great beer. (865 characters)

Been going here for beers and burgers for a bit over a year now, figured it was time to review.

The top criticism of this place is wait time on food. That being said, they are limited by the size of their kitchen and I think that most people that frequent Petrol are aware of this and plan for it. Just be chill about waiting for your food, grab another beer, and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. Your burger will be worth it.

The tap lineup provides great selection across styles and breweries; and they do growler fills, which, if you aren't from Texas, is a big deal.

Overall, just a great place for a lazy weekend afternoon or some after work beers. (653 characters)

Just between Garden Oaks and the Heights lies an old corner gas station that has been transformed into Houston’s best pub. The atmosphere is always one with friendly, knowledgeable staff who are ready to educate those who are new to the craft beers scene, and to slake the thirsts of craft brew aficionados. Petrol has rotating taps that carry seasonal craft brews, and occasional specialty brews like St Arnold Bourbon Barrel Winter Stout, and Southern Star Crème Brule Buried Hatchet. Great selection of local TX breweries. Come for the brews, stay for the burgers which are the best in Houston. The patrons are some of Houston’s finest and friendliest. It’s easy to strike up a conversation about anything with people you just met. Great place! (754 characters)

Small locale in the Garden Oaks neighborhood north of the 610 loop. Always rotating tap list which consists of 25-30 selections most of the time. Varied beers, always something good. Have had fresh Maharaja, Hopsickle, Chocolate Yeti, Double Bastard, Unibroue stuff. With (512), Real Ale, Independence, Southern Star, Saint Arnold offerings usually available. Casks from Saint Arnold and Real Ale are sometimes available. Inside could get cramped during peak hours. Front and back patio seating available. Small menu consists of soups, sandwiches, tacos on Tuesdays, and burgers. Oh the burgers! Easily some of the tastiest around. Free beer tastes and 1/2 pints available for 1/2 the price. Prices are very reasonable. They also do growler fills. What more do you want?! Parking is limited, though they have recently acquired a lot across the bar, so it isn't as bad. (868 characters)

Located in the middle of a neighborhood in the heights. Atmosphere is very chill and relaxed. Really nice people hang here and are always willing to strike up a conversation, not a ton of seating inside but if you get there early enough on a weekend or go during the week its not too hard to find a table. Patio in front and in the back are nice during the evening when the temperature isn't unbearable. Have a decent number of taps (35ish) and the selection is always top notch, great Texas craft brews and several from national breweries. They also have events every once in a while where the get rare kegs (Bitches Brew) and have experimental beers (Creme Brulee Buried Hatchet Stout). The food isn't typical bar food, its really good! The burgers are excellent and have been voted some of the best in Houston. Highly recommended and always a nice place to hang out any day of the week for some good beer. (908 characters)

The atmosphere of this place was great. Considering it is located in the middle of a neighborhood in the heights, I had my doubts... But the music was great and they have a big patio area in the back that makes it a perfect place to be on a nice day.

The quality of taps that they had was great. Alot of beers that you dont normally see around town and they rotate in new beers all the time.

I had great service when we went and they were very informative and helpful with my gf who is just getting into craft beer. They also do growler fills and I'm pretty sure they are the only place in town to do so.

Food was excellent. They are ranked in the top 4 for best burgers in Houston. Not to mention their hummus appetizer really hit this spot.

I thought that the beers were all reasonably priced for their selection. I was not upset when I received my bill at all

I definitely recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a good craft beer and I cant wait to go back myself. (984 characters)

Heard good thing about the Petrol Station, and was in Houston so gave it a shot. It's located in the middle of a neighborhood, kind of odd.

Real laid back atmosphere, wish there was something like this in Beaumont.

Beer selection was great. Had a 512 Pecan Porter and a Real Ale Sisyphus. Staff knew alot and was fun listening to them talk beer. Although I didn't eat the food looked great as well. Definitely need to order something next time.

Will be back whenever I'm in Houston. Great place (497 characters)

Heard great things about this place, and decided to give it a try. Its not a big place but has a decent amount of seating, and what I really like about this place is, keep in mind I was their on an early Saturday night, it doesn't get insanely packed to where you're fighting for your life to get a beer. Not a ton of taps, around 30 now because I think they did away with the coffee but dont quote me on the coffee line. But what they do have is pretty good and with that in mind I will be going back soon. (507 characters)

I finally got to make it to Petrol last night. I live in NW Houston so this was a 45 minute drive that was well worth it. This is an excellent dive bar that is everything I want in a watering hole. Not a huge number of taps but they don't waste any taps either. I only gave the atmosphere a "3" because of the cleanliness. I know its a bar and cleanliness is not a priority but when my feet stick to the floor (this was early in the night) I get grossed out. With that being said I will be going back as soon I can. (515 characters)

I had been wanting to give this place a try, finally got the chance while in town on business. Great, comfortable feel to the atmosphere. Interesting to see a cool place like this tucked into a neighborhood. A bit crowded inside, but plenty of seating outside also available.

I really don't have a place I'd call a "beer bar" at home, so for me, this place had a great selection. Had local staff like Saint Arnold's and Southern Star, and also some Avery, Oskar blues and some other good quality stuff.

I'll definitely be returning to Petrol Station on my next trip to Houston. Great local beer place. (603 characters)

Atmosphere: Straight Texas. Not one of the super huge halls that Houston has grown so fond of. Small, out of the way neighborhood joint with a great customer base and really homey indoor and outdoor seating. My preferred destination for a tipsy, lazy, weekend afternoon.

Quality: The beer selection is on the small side, but the Station always has stellar beers on draft and always features the best of Texas.

Service: The best you can ask for. I love a place where you can say to the bartender, "Pour me your favorite", and they just pour the beer with the conviction instead of hemming and hawing and asking, "What do you normally drink?" They are also always excited to talk to you about what they have, where it came from, etc. A+

Selection: Smaller (maybe 12 pulls), but always great beers, and always changing. Bonus: I have NEVER had a stale beer here. Much more than I can say for Taps, the Saucer, the G-Man, etc.

Food: Burgers! Monday happy hour deal is sith.

If you haven't been there, go there. If you are just visiting Houston, this place will make you wish you lived here. (1,091 characters)

Atmosphere - Well its an old neighborhood gas station thats been converted into a bar so its cozy to say the least. L shaped bar that seats about ten or so with four taps at one end and the rest on the wall. Very limited seating inside but lots of picnic tables out front on the patio and in the back yard.

Quality/Selection - With only 16 taps and usually five of them being IPAs the selection is a little limited for what I'm used to around town. However the majority of stuff they have on tap is usually pretty impressive and they're always getting strange/special kegs that none of the other bars get.

Service - As others have said it depends on when you go because of how busy they get. During non peak times the bartenders are quick with a beer and will talk beer. However when its busy be ready for a wait.

Food - They have a small kitchen that puts out some bad ass food. On my last visit I got the curry chicken salad sandwich and it was awesome with a good touch of spice to go with my cask Hop Devil.

Overall this is a good place to go for some good beer and a good burgers and sandwiches. (1,104 characters)

This place could get two different kinds of ratings: an awesome place early in the day when no ones around but jesus, turns unbearable at night, takes 20-30 mins to order a beer and you have to shout at the top of your lungs at the same time .. . Great burger, horrible horrible fries. One bathroom for the entire place, took 30 mins just to pee. place has grow to big for its boots.. i will only go again if in the area and if they expand the bathrooms, servers, and taps.. but the 10 taps they do have were quality, mostly big beers- no sessions... they do the occasion cask and the parkings a joke, maybe 7 spots then all down the streets. .. (645 characters)

Set in a residential area. You wouldn't expect a good beer destination here, but one definitely exists! Indoor seating options include 5 regular tables, 2 tall tables, and seating for another 15 or so along the bar. Outside there are quite a few tables in back and several in front. All the beers appeared to be good choices, at least they were all craft beers. The tap list on my visit:
Stone Cali Belgique
Hopsickle
Stone Ruination
Southern Star Buried Hatchet with coffee
DFH 90 minute
Stone Double Bastard
Stone Old Guardian
Saint Arnold Spring Bock
Modus Hoperandi
and 3-4 others.

Must have been Stone night/week/month. Prompt friendly service, I think I was served by the owner... Low number of taps but all quality. Highly recommended for the great choices + laid-back atmosphere. (789 characters)
