33cl bottle with quite a bit of age on it (I believe best by 07.) Poured into an Oerbier oversized wine glass, the brew appears a burnt copper color that is quite clear. However, despite a careful pour some yeast particulate makes its way into the glass. Rising bubbles of carbonation maintain more than a finger of khaki head throughout the entire experience. A swirl revives more than a finger of froth effortlessly back to the surface and produces some finger-like patterns of stringy lace.

The aroma is sweet with an essence of belgian candy sugar but contrasted with almost a cheesy to funky aspect is also present when swirled. There is a bit of earthen quality about this that blends into something more fruity like cherry, apple and/or pears. That 10% alcohol is evident but very faintly across the back when a deep whiff is taken. Once the brew goes beyond ideal temperature, there is a very soft suggestion of vinegar that while not distracting was not expected.

The flavor of this brew is quite bready with malt that blends into a touch of cardboard-like oxidation. Some sweetness is present tasting a bit like caramel, toffee and transitions into more of a fruity alcohol note like apple and/or pear skins. Some earthen notes are ever present with every sip that breaks up the experience a bit. The aftertaste has a very faint suggestion of cider. I hate to say this but the overall flavors of this brew are better while colder. As the brew comes up to temperature, the alcohol inclusion becomes almost solvent and numbing to the palate.

This is a medium bodied brew with a lively but not overdone amount of carbonation. The flavors are spot on for what anyone could want/expect in a tripel. However, despite this brew having quite a bit of age on it, the alcohol is well pronounced but integrated fairly decently in this brew. If anything, the warmth of this brew distracts just a bit from the overall ease of drinkability. The last time I had this brew it was from a 750ml that was 17 years old. It was not the best of experiences but this even with its own significant aging was much better. I am curious now about having a bottle as fresh as possible just for the sake of comparison. If you havent had this yet, what are you waiting for? I will need to put this on the to-do list to grab more of these when I see them.

330ml bottle into a goblet. There is no age stamped on the cap but judging by the other De Dolle beers at the liquor store, this one is probably around 2008 vintage.

Pours a very dirty dark gold with lots of specks in it. However the head is a very billowy, frothy bright white with a few specks of yeast so I have to give it some credit for that.

Right off the bat in the aroma I can tell this beer has some age. The sherry/wet cardboard note of oxidation is quite present and overpowers anything else. Apple is very strong along with notes of plums and dark fruit; sort of out of character for a triple.

The flavor continues the oxidized notes. More apple and plums along with sherry. The oxidation character starts to become a little too much as the flavor lingers. There is almost a touch of smokiness about it but not in a real good way. This beer definitely does not have the characteristics of a Tripel that I was expecting. Mouthfeel is quite sticky; not dry like I was hoping for.

Overall, I feel like this beer is a bit past its prime. I was hoping to get a nice, aged beer but this one has been on the shelf a bit too long. Hopefully I will be able to try a fresh sample one day.

Pours a rusty orange amber with a medium white head. Aroma ripe apple, pears, Belgian yeast, fruity alcohol esters, some dark fruit notes as it warms up. Taste of Belgian yeast, fruity flavor of dark fruit, dried plums sweetness and a mild tartness, sweet alcohol. Palate is a med to full body with sweet tart Belgian yeast and moderate carbonation. Finish is of sweet ripe dark fruit, dried sweet tart plums, Belgian yeast, with mild bitterness and sweet alcohol. Overall a very good, tasty and all around flavorful brew, very nice

From a 330 ml bottle (Dated October 2013 on the cap) into a chalice.

A-A gentle pour produces about two fat fingers of light tan head. The foam is dense and retention is quite good. There is a good show of carbonation in the glass, too. The beer is clear and orange-ish golden in hue.

S-The aroma offers of lots of fruity, warming alcohol. I smell green apple and candy sugar, in particular, as well as a bit of bubblegum, some pepper spice, and a bit of lightly bitter, grassy/straw-scented hops.

T-The taste is not afraid to show its 10% ABV, but the taste is less assertive than the smell, which is a good thing. The flavors are still fruity (green apple flesh) and sweet up front, but there is a bit more spice (pepper and clove) and light lemon tartness. The finish is lightly bitter and suggests dry grass and spice.

M-The body is medium in heft with an above average level of carbonation that hurts the smoothness factor.

O-This is a pretty solid tripel. It is very aggressive, with the alcohol but the flavors are nicely balanced, so the beer manages to get away with being so in-my-face. The hops are especially well-done here. The mouthfeel is a little fizzy for my liking in a tripel, but overall this a solid beer that I will drink again if I need a break from my usual Karmeliet fix.

Yellow color with a one finger with short retention but always keeping a thin plate.
Interesting aroma with predominant notes of melon, dry fruit, pineapple, wheat, pine, green apples and white wine.
Flavor of Cointreau liquor, spices, lots of yeast, dry fruits, champagne, herbal hops, green apples, white tea, melon, flowers and honey. Dry, bitter and acid aftertaste.
Medium body with effervescent carbonation. 10% abv is felt; well it is hard to disguise an elephant with a skirt.
Seemed to me like a mix of Belgian IPA with a Tripel. An alcoholic punch and a bit too sweet resulting in low drinkability. A must for Tripel lovers.
