The beer poured into the chalice clear deep brown with a ruby highlight. The head was tan/brown and rose very tall to fall slowly and lace the glass as the beer was consumed.

The aroma was large belgian yeast aroma with a strong fruitiness and high esters from a large alcohol presence. Chocolate malt aromas followed the belgian yeast, spice and alcohol aromatics, behind those aromas was a significant smoke presence.

The flavor was chocolate and smoke, strong smoke, yet the flavors were extremely interesting. The chocolate and smoke blended in an interesting mix with coffee flavors. Also present was an interesting caramel presence which led to a very malty impression. The complexity of all the flavors of smoke and caramel and chocolate and coffee and alcohol all blend into an interesting mix of a stout flavor like no other.

The finish was just dry with caramel and chocolate and smoke and coffee and a bazillion other spice and alcohol flavors lasting long into the aftertaste. The body was medium full but seemed much less due to the alcohol presence and the higher level of carbonation.

11.2 ounce bottle (33 cl). A very complex and interesting stout which offers tons of complexity and flavor. The "Mad Brewers" have truly gone mad with this one. I don't know what they actually put into the bottle, but I have three more in which to find out...

330cl bottle with unmarked red cap. "Bottled" is stamped on the cap but no date.

Served slightly chilled from the bottle into a tulip glass.

It's a nearly black beer with thick redish tan head.

Aroma is unusal. A cross between stout notes of roasted coffee and dark chocolate combined with Belgian ale yeast qualities of spice and funk.

Flavor is a complex blend of chocolate, coffee, nuts, red wine, and tannins. It's balanced and full of depth.

Mouthfeel is full bodied and highly carbonated.

Overall a good Belgian stout and interesting but not my favorite.

2008 bottle; about 6 years old, cellared at 55 degrees F.

Very dark brown, with a large tan head that reduces to a creamy quarter inch layer.

Smells like soot, and hints of grain, dark chocolate and dark fruit.

Tastes like smooth chocolate malt combined with sooty roastiness, and after a few seconds a good amount of assertive bitterness joins in and intensifies into the finish. Moderate acidity. Full flavored and tasty, with excellent balance and good length.

Over-carbonated out of the bottle, but some swirling renders it creamy and smooth. Medium bodied; not very thick for the style, but does have a nice silkiness.

This seems to have aged gracefully; quite enjoyable.

A cool looking label intrigued me. The pour was less than stellar however. Hugely frothy and a bit of murkiness amongst the extremely dark brown, nearly black, body. Whatever, onward ho!

You get a BLAST of aromas. Coffee grinds, cocoa powder, burnt toast, figs, prunes, and even a touch of leather. Musky as well, although this is more of a mild background tone. Flavors are all over the place and work quite nicely together. Smooth and medium bodied, but carbonation is up there. Any more carbonation and I wouldn't like it as much. But overall, a good beer indeed.

Bottle poured into a Stone Snifter. Bottled February 2013.

Has an incredible amount of tan head. This beer has set in in my fridge for sometime and I cannot believe the amount of explosive head that comes out of this thing. You would need a big gulp if you wanted to do an aggressive pour with this. Head finally settles and begins to flot with a 1/2 finger thickness. Smell is very strong with some sweet malt rather than roast and sour fruits. Taste is less sour than smell and has a hint of chocolate.

Served in a Biere de Miel Tulip at Novare Res. I love thr bottle, 33cl., almost looks like it was printed off and slapped on.

The beer is black with a creamy tan head. the head remains and eventually floats.

the nose is fruity almost blue and black berries, typical of a belgian stout. Not alot of roast but very nice.

the flavor matches, starting sweet and finishing wiht an almost tartness and fruitiness. I've had fruit beers with less flavor of fruti than this.

Overall nice a dumbed down version of black albert.
