Bartender put the beer on the table for me and went to grab a glass...foam everywhere. Needless to say, this black beer has a giant head.

Smelled a bit smokey and heavy, really pleasant. Tasted dry, smokey, bit of chocolate, highly carbonated. Great aftertaste.

Would get this again.

Served in a Biere de Miel Tulip at Novare Res. I love thr bottle, 33cl., almost looks like it was printed off and slapped on.

The beer is black with a creamy tan head. the head remains and eventually floats.

the nose is fruity almost blue and black berries, typical of a belgian stout. Not alot of roast but very nice.

the flavor matches, starting sweet and finishing wiht an almost tartness and fruitiness. I've had fruit beers with less flavor of fruti than this.

Overall nice a dumbed down version of black albert.

Having read a number of the other reviews, it seems like there is more variability in this beer than what I'm generally used to. The bottle I tried poured with a thick tan head that settled into a creamy, persistent lacing. I got a big boosey nose right away that really defined this beer for me. It wasn't unpleasant but rather, it was quite nice. Alcohol was up front in the taste but the rest of the flavor notes were strong enough to balance it well. There was a sour taste that set in fairly quickly and really distinguished this from other stouts. This one component to the taste added a lot of complexity and was what gave it the edge to stand up to the alcohol. I haven't seen anyone else mention this and it makes me wonder if the difference in this bottle came from the way it was handled and stored before I bought it. Medium body for a stout and a pleasant, creamy mouthfeel. I really enjoyed it and would buy more if I thought it would be consistent.

February 2013 bottling

A Pours a massive head that lingered for a few minutes before settling down and allowing me to pour the rest of the beer into the glass. Pitch black and mocha head.

S: Aroma of sweet malt, bittering hops and mocha. slightly sour aroma as well.

T: Flavors of sweet residual crystal sugars and burnt mocha coffee twinings. Cocoa, dark bakers chocolate, earthiness and eerily reminiscent of many robust stouts. Burnt raisins and dryness from added sugars seem to also be present. This is definitely not an Imperial stout but more of a hybrid between a Robust Porter and imperial stout.

M: Medium bodied with higher levels of carbonation comparitively to an imperial stout.

O: Overall this is a different beer that is worth trying. I have passed this one by many times, but finally got around to trying it out of necessity since I have enjoyed De Dolle's other beers many times. I think Ill stick with Still Nacht though as my favorite from them for the time being.

This isn't your typical kind of stout, kids.

First, this is a damn ugly bottle. Nothing like the rest of De Dolle's labels. Shame.

Pour: really lovely head, some nice lacing 10 min after the pour. Effervescent.

Smell: kind of muted. I'm drinking it around room temp. Pear, chocolate, roast, some mild citrus, some sweetness on the nose.

Appearance: Black. duh.

Taste: really interesting. There is a bitterness that comes about 3 seconds after the swallow and it coats the tongue after. A black patent malt bitterness, which still has some currant/fruit flavour to it. It has some definite sweetness and acidity to it and there is an almost citrus-like middle-of-the-tongue flavour. More black patent taste than a roasted barley taste. Coffee-grind, almost.

Mouthfeel: effervescent on the tongue, thick, nice. Not as heavy as other stouts, but still very pleasant.

You cannot taste any of the alcohol in this. But it is still created as a sipper. The carbonation and the acidity and bitterness make it a slow ride. and that ain't a bad thing. very unsessionable. sit down with a box of chocolates and drink this while you eat. or maybe have it with some Mexican/mole.

Pored into a tulip.

A: Dark brown with a nice caramel colored head and nice lacing that sticks around and quite a few alcohol legs.

S: Coco, malt, yeast esters.

T: Coco, molasses, roasted malts, a bitter hop and burned malt blend and bottle conditioned yeast.

M: Creamy and Carbonated with a medium body not very much alcohol sting for a 9 % er.

O. This is what I would call a stout and strong dark ale combo. I think it's really well balanced and very drinkable. A hybrid like this might not be for everyone, though.
