bottle courtesy of Bartrash. poured into snifter.
a - pours dark brown with a nice tan head. head dies off, but held on longer than I expected.
s - smell is acidic and vinegar. oak and tart cherry.
t - wow, quite sour. oak is huge, and while i can taste the booze, it is very mellow for 13%. dry vinegar flavor. i'm not getting any of the sweet fruit flavors others got, but i do get some grapefruit rind flavor, but its not that bitter.
m - medium-light body. great carbonation. dry feel.
overall - wow, this does a phenomenal job at hiding the booze. If i didn't know, i would guess 6-7%. very good flavor, but i'm wondering why i'm not picking up any fruit. It would be nice.

Bottle poured into a tulip; side by side with the 2006
Pours a murky brown, with a small, bubbly white cap. Small spider web lacing as you work through the beer. Head recedes to a powdered sugar-like coating.
Up front, some notes of figs, pear, and grapes with oak tannins in tow. Tart cherries are subtle, with a toffee earthiness that is predominant.
The taste follows the nose, except a prevailing tartness comes out. Kind of an odd tartness, with some metallic notes to it. Grapes and cherries lending a soft fruitiness with toffee and figs over top. A light oakiness just kind of hangs out in the background.
Medium body with high carbonation. The finish is of a lingering sourness, with some slight metallic flavors, and some figs and earth. Dry and crisp.
Complex and tasty example of the style. At this point in the aging process, it is not as well-rounded as it should be. Maybe another year would work well.
I found this to be fairly different than the '06 I had sitting right next to it. This seemed to have some higher carbonation and an increased sour note. A lot of the flavor and aroma notes are the same, but the '06 was better melded together and "whole," for lack of a better term.

Enjoyed April, 2012 (Zythos weekend):
Oddly compelling as both an oude bruin and a strong dark ale, but uniquely Belgian throughout, this beer goes a lot of directions at once.
Pouring a russet brown color of rust and burgundy, the yeasty haze delivers a heavy appearance of opaqueness and dullness. Capped with an off white head of yellowish discoloration, the creamy foam is semi-stubborn as it holds its structure for much of the duration with light lace.
Sharp aromas of worn wood, musty malt, sharp tartness and light medicine pull ahead of tart wine like fruitiness and dry sweetness underneath. Spicy with cinnamon, clove, and white pepper, the beer's tawny scent is both sharp to the nose and mature in its mellowness.
Flavor follow suite with the early taste of toast and chocolate that soon sheads it's dry malty taste in favor of more tartness, leather, aged woods, raw tobacco, and sherry-like savory wines. Tart berries, light white wine cider, and dried cherries balance against peppery spice, mild smoke, and plastic-like medicinal notes for complexity and challenge in taste.
Medium bodied, but the beer feels lighter because of the acidity, prickle of alcohol and spice, and sharply astringent pang in finish. Lightly powdery and dusty as the beer's finishing texture reintroduces an aftertaste of dry woods and peppercorn.
The balance of this five-year vintage has tilted heavily toward the side of phenolic spice which gives the beer an odd mushroomy medicinal property of electrical tape and plastics and are beginning to upset the interplay of malt, spice, and fruit. As a contrast, the classic dark strong ale vintage of '02 has held up much nicer.
