Poured into a tulip glass.

A: Dark brown, very slight faint mahogany reddish, thick head, that is self-sustaining with carbonation and some pretty nice lacing...

S: Sour, tart fruits. Slight vinegar and sour apples...

T: Sour, tangy, slightly acidity, definitely can taste some nice woody overtones which I guess must be oak since it is aged in oak barrels. Being that this is my first experience with a Flanders Oud Bruin, I am definitely appreciating this brew. Very little to imperceptive alcohol presence. Dry, light finish.

M: Light and tart, would be a pretty good summer beer.

D: Can't believe the abv. Crazy... the more I taste, it grows on me. I'm liking this, but at the same time, will heed the alcohol content in spite of its near absence in the mouth...

A: Reddish brown, slightly hazy, with a beige uneven big head. Lots of lacings and a thick lid of foam sticks around for the show.

S: A very big smell with notes of sweet and tart fruits, wet wood, oak, grass, yeast, spices and malts. Hints of fudge, cola and herbal freshness. A very vinous character. When the yeast sediments go in the glass, a mild semi-funky aroma develops.

T: A very big taste with lots of flavors rushing forward and almost attack the mouth. Malty sweetness mixes nicely with fruity tartness. Notes of spices, bread, wood, plums, cherries and fudge. That lovely earthy Oerbier yeast blends perfectly with the slightly tart and semi-funky barrel character. Very vinous. The finish has some bitterness to it and well integrated sweet alcohol that sends a warming sensation through the body. Dry wood notes and fruity yeasty flavors lingers on.

M: Medium body, very smooth and slightly sticky mouthfeel. Semi-dry finish and quite a lot of carbonation.

D: A fantastic beer. Very complex and balanced. The way the sweetness, tartness and bitterness interact is just amazing. It's very vinous with quite a lot of components reminiscent of red wine. Delicious.

Reviewed from notes.

Poured from an 11.2 oz bottle into a Fin Du Monde tulip glass. Slight pour yields a scant bubbly film that barely coats the surface. Moderately light lace. Color is a dark brown.

nose- Anise, dehydrated cranberry, very different.

Palate- Exceedingly tart and sharp on the palate. Very sour, sour apples, grape skins, and pure grapefruit extract. Mouth puckering. Not what I was expecting.

Mouthfeel- Tart, bitter and tanic

Drinkability- Not for me, glad I was able to split.

Picked up a bottle at Green's on Buford in Atlanta.

Pours a hazy copper-brown color with a one-finger slightly off-white head. The head dissipates into a thin pancake on top leaving solid lacing.

Smells good. Slightly tart fruits - figs, berries and hints of pear - are backed by mild hints of oak. As it warms some funk manages its way out.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Sweet malts are joined by tart fruits in very nice balance. Near the end of the sip a hint of the wood comes out right before an ending that leaves a perfect amount of tartness lingering. I would never guess this was 13.0% ABV - more like 8-9%.

Mouthfeel is good. It's got a good thickness with soft carbonation and goes down smoothly.

Drinkability is very good. I split a 12 oz. bottle but could easily have two to three of these.

Overall the most impressive thing about this beer was how well it hid the alcohol. A very tasty Oud Bruin that's definitely worth a shot.

UPDATE 4/14/11: Tasted this again courtesy of Jeremy and it is hands down the best out of 2005-2009. The tartness has increased since the previous review. Very much worth a shot.

11.2oz. brown bottle, purchased at Dilly Deli, poured into a Chimay glass.

A: Pours a dark shoe leather without much visibility. Good head forms latte foam tan with good retention and lacing.

S: Tons of caramel and caramelized dark fruits. Plenty of alcohol mixed in with the sweetness as well as the complexity of the oak. A bit of tartness and light sour notes are tossed in with the fruits.

T/M: Quite tart. Very tart cherries with some raisins in the back. Alcohol cuts through a bit. The sweet caramel and non-tart dark fruits are nearly completely hidden behind the tartness. The oak stands up to the tart and sour cherries and adds a nice depth to them. Body is maybe a bit above medium with pretty good carbonation to smooth things out.

D: Alcohol is there but doesn't feel like 13%. A touch tart for my personal liking and that'll lower the drinkability, but good nonetheless.

Picked up for $6 at Abe's Cold Beer. This beer reminds me a bit of a cherry stout homebrew I made for the tart cherry flavor that almost dominates the flavor. I say 'almost' because the acidic citrus that rounds out the taste. The aroma has a mellow oak element with caramel candy. Additionally, there are hints of dates, Belgian-spiced plums (like youd find in a good Belgian strong dark ale) and red grapes before the tart grapefruit kicks in. There's a subtle earthy hops note in the finish and an aftertaste that fades into tangy, mouth-puckering lemon. Considering how most sour beer are real sippers, this beer has amazing drinkability. It's 13% and drinks like a beer at half the strength. Watch out, this beer could put you in a ditch. And word to the wise, let this baby warm up to cellar temp. The complexity comes alive with a little warmth.

2007 bottle at De Dolle poured by Kris himself.

A - Dark reddish-brown color with a nice large off-white head.

S - Aroma is vinous and somewhat tart with lots of other dark fruits, also barrel notes and vinegar present.

T - The flavor is complex with dark fruits, red wine, port, chocolate, and wood. Fairly tart, yet not so much as, say, your average American sour ale. This beer is much more balanced than those tend to be, with a much fuller flavor, and is pleasantly tart while skipping the mouth-puckering sourness.

M - Dry finish with a fairly full body and medium-high carbonation.

D - Well, it's a 13% cask-aged beer. I'd say it's more drinkable than your average red wine, which could be a fair comparison given the ABV and the fact that this was matured in Bordeaux casks.

Served in a stemmed Oerbier glass around 50º. Thin cap of eggshell foam, the glass is a glowing dark orange-ruby orb with direct light behind it. Tiny streams of racing carbonation. In low light the color is more of a mahoghany tone. After 30 minutes the head is still unbroken.

Ripe cheese and balsamic notes, wet wood, damp forest floor. At room temperature there is almost a hint of some mystery confection, maybe toffee, also brandy. Very hard to pin down, it seems to change over time in a progressive way. Definite barrel and cherry pit.

Succulent black cherry, leather, sharp cheese, hay, with a sticky chambord finish. Toasted barrel staves. Long lasting dry sherry and oak notes. Really bursting with tart fruit and funky, woody essence.

Creamy full body, long and savory finish that plays with the senses. A perennial favorite that I look forward to every year about this time. Cheers to Kris Herteleer and his masterful work!

I shared this beautiful beer with my wife. Its body is a murky deep brown mahogany in tone. Head grows quickly with biscuity brown bubbles that fade to a skim in minutes. The nose on this one is off the chart. It is bursting with fresh ripe dark fruits like blueberries, strawberries, and overly ripe citrus and even a hint of bubble gum. This fragrance really fills up the room with a full lovely aroma. Enters the mouth with big, rich dark fruits that are accompanied by a wonderful tart feel that is so complete and balanced. Along with this in such a well presented manner comes an earthy tannin feel that is absolutely classy. Mouthfeel is bold, rich and softly tart in a way that is perfect. Supremely drinkable, a beer you really never want to end.

I essentially made the trip up to Asheville for this beer, as I did not want to miss out on this years bottling, having lagged on last years quite a bit. Stopped in at Bruisin and this was the first grab. After dinner tonight I figured it would be a more then fitting nightcap. Served chilled in a Chimay chalice, this one was consumed on 11/09/2008.

The pour was very solid. A rich, dark brown color taking shape right before my eyes. A nice little puff of off white head then crept up over the top and reached a height of around an inch and stayed put. Never sinking below this level, it just simply served to deposit an enormous amount of side glass lace that just coated the inside of the glass.

The aroma was rich, and amazingly tart. Delicous notes of dark cherries, tart apple, hints of light grain and sour grapes. Light notes of random fruits just layered on top of a deep, resinous funk. The flavor though, best of the style I have ever had hands down. Just a crashing wave of sour and tart fruit, exploring parts of the taste buds that you did not think were there. Not as terribly sour as some of the big brett beers, this was more subtle, more condensed. Rich cherry notes dominating the flavor here with a wonderful turn over to an almost candy like flavor in the middle, which just turned in on itself and sucked all the moisture out of the mouth with the long, dry finish. Amazingly drinkable with not a hint of the huge ABV here to be found. This was a remarkable beer.

In the end, this was not at all what I was expecting. This was just fantastically good. One of the best I have ever had I would have to say. Good enough for me to grab another bottle or two for sure. a fantastic beer that you need to get out there and try.

Been wanting to try this for a while now.
Pours a dark reddish brown in color. There's a nice frothy half inch of head sitting atop and sticking around for some time.
Smell is caramel, toffee and some tart/sourness.
Taste is much more sour than I was expecting and I love it. What a pleasant surprise. Very nice light fruit flavor with a huge amount of tartness. Mouthfeel is full and creamy with the perfect amount of carbonation to match the tartness. There is absolutely, positively no sign of the alcohol which makes this beer even better.
Amazing. I want to pick up some more, but for $9 a 11oz bottle, I'm going to have to think about it.

330ml purchased from Publick House Provisions into a Duvel tulip...

1-finger tight, natural ginger-colored head tops a cloudy, bountiful clove/gingerbread body - looks rustic, hearty and spicy. Head brings a very chunky seam. Somewhat hazy but this looks quite comforting.

Salty bicarb makes a faint first impression but thankfully makes its exit. Hugem sour, braised dark fruits...sour plums (?) come about with mild clove, slight vinegar and bountiful weighty malt. Hops? A trace if that.

Wow - I am digging the up-front peppercorn spice on top of the sour power of deep, dark clove and figs - carbonation gives it a little light body to the Brett...but the "horse blanket" feel is very mild. Very well-constructed.

Palate presence is excellent - stewed fruit brings a sour pucker against a slight yeasty feel. OVerall very tangy. Finish is long and drawn out with strength bout almost as bright as a lambic.

This style is predispositioned to sipping but this is so well done it's a pleasure to enjoy.

Sidebar: My 4 1/2-year-old insisted on smelling what was in my glass - of course I caved thinking he would find it disgusting. His exact words..."Whoa, that's good - can I have some?" Are you friggin' kidding me?

Poured from an 11.2oz bottle into a Struise tulip.

Cap marked: BOTTL 2008

A: Pours a relatively clear but deep dark mahogany. Perched on top is an incredible looking 4-finger mass of perfectly creamy foam that's dark khaki in color. Head retention was excellent and full-on sheets of lace were left, stuck to the glass.

S: Gentle aromas of vinegar infused cherries that are further tempered by smells of oak, figs, and plums. Possibly a hint of tart green apple.

T: See above, tastes much like it smells. Soft vinegar and sour cherry flavors are complimented by flavors of damp bark, subtle dark fruit, and tangy/tart orchard fruit (green apple and/or waaaay underipe peaches).

M: I fully expected a tongue stripping vinegar mess but was gifted with a mouthfeel that was equal parts sour, sweet, and tart. Actually, really quite lush feeling. The oak aged astringency of the finish acted to merely add to and not take away from what happened before it. Oh, and where is that 13%? I couldn't detect it at all.

D: I, literally, had to keep looking at the bottle...mostly in disbelief. 13%? C'mon! That has to be a typo, right? Well, it is there, just lurking until the end of the glass. Suddenly my stomach felt quite warm. I'm so glad I was able to try this again.

a - pours dark brown with a nice tan head. head dies off, but held on longer than I expected.

s - smell is acidic and vinegar. oak and tart cherry.

t - wow, quite sour. oak is huge, and while i can taste the booze, it is very mellow for 13%. dry vinegar flavor. i'm not getting any of the sweet fruit flavors others got, but i do get some grapefruit rind flavor, but its not that bitter.

m - medium-light body. great carbonation. dry feel.

overall - wow, this does a phenomenal job at hiding the booze. If i didn't know, i would guess 6-7%. very good flavor, but i'm wondering why i'm not picking up any fruit. It would be nice.
