Note: reviewed yesterday for Easter, but I had trouble uploading the review.

A 330ml bottle with no obvious BB date. Picked up a couple of days ago from my local beer specialist - just in time for Easter. The child-like drawing on the label is amusing.

Poured into a Duvel tulip. A hazy golden-amber hue with strong carbonation. Produces an enormous head of white foam with a meringue-like consistency and great retention; this eventually subsides to a surface layer. The aroma is sweet & intense - almost cloyingly fruity. Notes of white grapes, melon, apples, almonds, banana, faint citrus, yeast and a spicy hint of alcohol.

Tastes of sweet, fruity yeast esters with a dry, alcoholic finish. Notes of apples, grapes, melon, citrus, marzipan, sugar, mild banana and dry yeast. Background hints of stewed hops, and a hot, spicy alcoholic note upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, dry and tingly, with great body. Highly astringent - dries the palate. Aftertaste of dry, fruity yeast esters.

Impressive - an incredible array of fruity notes accompany this beer. Strong and well-balanced, with a range of flavours that is both subtle and complex. It's difficult to compare this to anything else I've tried - it's unique. Not a brew for everyday quaffing, but well worth trying if you come across it.

Taking some time to finally finish its cascade and rise, a slightly yellow-tinted head tapers off to finish at a height of nearly two fingers, at which point retention is good, though the bubbles keep rising quickly for some time. Lacing varies between some light netting and spotting. The beer itself, still continuing to churn as it sits, is a murky dark gold with a lack of filtration leading to plenty of yeast visibly floating and swirling in it.
Not knowing what to expect, and having randomly picked this bottle up off the shelf, I'm very pleasantly surprised and even taken aback by this beer's rich and complex aroma. There are a few layers, each with a bit of a different sweetness coming in along with varying degrees and manners of earthiness and gentle spiciness. There's a slight, appropriate and even amplifying medicinal element that is present enough but tame enough to not give the impression of the medicine it's reminiscent of. Coming through all this is fresh, ripe tropical fruits flesh. I could keep my nose in here for a long time.
Fortunately, though, I drink it, and I'm glad I do; if anything, it tastes even better than it smells. The different flavors roll off each other, blending while each showing its own unique traits to the tongue. The yeast is prominent without dominating, presenting just enough sweetness and spice and, when the leafy hops come in with its bitterness to balance it all, it's nearly perfect.
The body of the beer is medium, and the feel is semi-sweet with just a bit of leafy dryness on the tongue. Crispness is sharp and stays the whole way through. A sort of tartness the palate can feels lingers with a hint of sugars.

330 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled in 3/2014. Pours lightly hazy/cloudy bright orange color with a huge 3 finger dense and rocky off white head with incredible retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice dense soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a large amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of big lemon, apricot, citrus zest, pear, apple, white grape, candi sugar, honey, bread, herbal, straw, grass, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast, earthy hops, and pale malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big lemon, apricot, citrus zest, pear, apple, white grape, candi sugar, honey, bread, herbal, straw, grass, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Good amount of earthy bitterness/yeast spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of lemon, apricot, citrus zest, pear, apple, white grape, candi sugar, honey, bread, herbal, straw, grass, light pepper, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity and robustness of fruity/spicy yeast, earthy hops, and pale malt sweetness; with a great crisp malt/yeast balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a very smooth, crisp, and slightly slick/prickly mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is an awesome Belgian strong pale ale. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, earthy hops, and pale malt sweetness; and extremely smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

33cl bottle served in a DFH signature glass. Bottled March 2014

Appearance: Pours a cloudy golden orange color with 2+ fingers of a creamy white head. Excellent head retention and lacing. Body is very hazy with insane amounts of visible carbonation. High amounts of suspended sediment as well.

Smell: Big fruity yeast character, chalky/powdery yeast, sweet apple, pear, slight caramel, earthy and spicy. Really inviting.

Taste: Apple, pear, spicy yeast, doughy malt, candi sugar. Big sweetness upfront that dries out a bit in the finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, creamy mouthfeel. High carbonation.

Overall: Another great beer from De Dolle. I've yet to have a beer from these guys that wasn't very good. As far as I'm concerned, they're one of the most underrated breweries in the world. If you're a fan of Belgian beers, this is definitely worth picking up.

on tap at the bull and bush, who have really expanded their guest offerings in the last half year or so. this is my first from these guys (i think), a real treat. listed on the menu at 8.9% abv rather than the 10% abv listed here, but i am attributing that to batch variance rather than misinformation. a great beer, a spring strong blonde brewed with honey. it looks, smells, and tastes a lot like a classic tripel, maybe a little lighter in body, a little more aggressively hopped, and a little lighter on the leftover sugar, but the belgian yeast, pale wheat based body, and booze component are all on par with the style. some floral character to this, and a real easy drinking lightness for its enormity. i know this isnt one of the rare crazy beers from these guys, but its a heck of an introduction to a very storied brewery for me. i know i am late to the party, but this one has me keen for more. so dry in feel, and for a fuller bodied strong beer, its a nice touch. cool yeast, not overdone, and nice crispy carbonation. top tier brew, just a little less interesting than i hoped for, but real yummy.

(cap says "BOTTLED MAR2012" - huh... purchased at Local 44 bottle shop less than a week ago - poured into a balloon)

A: moderately hazy light amber color... huge sea cap sudsy foam that takes its good ol' time sinking down - kinda has a glow like melting marshmallows... thick sprays of crystalline lace taking hold, steady solid cap till the end

S: starts chalky and chewy-biscuity but, with a long strong whiff, out drags a bolder punch of honey, melon, frosted apple danish, phenolic spice... slight note of moscato maybe?... if you've had enough De Dolle beers, it has their quintessential bouquet - but I'm wondering if a couple years old, as is here, the smell intensifies... it's fantastic!

T: aggressive spiciness and a dry vinous, melon fruitiness up front... buzzing bitter, grassy hum afterwards; whisper of circus peanut and a light caramel-y cookie in the finish - the malt is stifled by the loud, static yeast funk... lasting peppery effect, but not quite as vivid a flavor... medicinal fusels creep up in the far background toward the end, covered with a blanket

M: cottony foam kisses the lips on contact, opens up like a bubble once in the mouth (swirl this mf if you're just trying to enjoy it), thin foamy blanket carries through... not as dry as I expected, smidge of honeyish roundness... muffled, jet fuel warmth heats up the thorax on the first sip and holds a good minute or two, mellows out subsequently... yeah, it ends up repeating dry and moderately scraping - this would tear through oily fats on the palate

O: similar to, but less fruity and dynamic than Arabier... pretty straight-forward offering from De Dolle - no problem with that... would likely kill it accompanying greasy mussels or breaded calamari - feel like it's lonely on its own
