Appearance: Pours a typical red brown color with 2 fingers of a light tan head that settles to a thin coating. Body is murky with only faint hints of light passing through.

Smell: Vinegar, oak, red wine, overripe apple, slight breadiness. Vinegar notes a perhaps a bit overwhelming, but overall still really nice

Taste: Starts with a medium acidic sourness which carries through the finish. Most prominent are notes of red grape, vinegar, brown bread, cherries and red apple.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with medium fine, prickly carbonation. Moderately strong alcohol warming sensation in the back of the throat, but goes down smooth.

Overall: Pretty good stuff and worth trying if you find it. I'm not sure the elevated ABV is needed, but I enjoyed sitting back, taking my time and sipping on this.

330ml bottle poured into HF fest wine glass.

A- Pours a fairly opaque mahogany brown with a little bit of a reddish hue, about a finger and half worth of slightly off-white head forms that has just a hint of a yellowish hue and excellent retention, fairly carbonated with a very nice consistency.

S- Lightly tart cherries, malts, a bit of yeast, oak. Nice complexity, decent aroma strength, awesome for style.

T- Lightly tart cherries, balanced yeast, slight woody oak presence. I think age will do this beer wonders bringing out a nice tartness to balance with the other flavors.

M- Medium bodied, nice carbonation that sizzles a little bit in your mouth, very drinkable, alcohol almost not detectable at all.

O- I haven't had too many De Dolle beers but like many of them this is meant for aging. I don't think this will peak for awhile, another 5 years will probably bring out a nice tartness and it will probably still be drinkable 10-15 years from now. I wish I had a few more of these to cellar and experiment with. It's tasting great right now but I think it will improve a bit with time.

330 ml bottle into tulip glass, 2010 vintage. Pours very hazy dark ruby red color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty foamy lacing clings on the glass, with some light streaming carbonation. Aromas of big sour cherry, green apple, raisin, red wine, vinegar, oak, clove, pepper, toast, caramel, hay, leather, funk, and yeast earthiness. Fantastic aromas with great balance and complexity of malt, yeast, and barrel notes; with great strength. Taste of big sour cherry, cranberry, green apple, raisin, red wine, clove, oak, vinegar, pepper, leather, hay, caramel, toast, funk, and yeast earthiness. Good amount of earthy/fruity/spicy tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of sour cherry, cranberry, green apple, raisin, red wine, clove, oak, pepper, vinegar, caramel, toast, hay, leather, funk, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible balance and complexity of tart/fruity yeast notes with prominent barrel character; with a great malt/tart/spiciness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a lightly slick, crisp, and moderately acidic mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a small warming present after the finish. Overall this is an absolutely incredible Flanders brown ale! All around outstanding balance and complexity of malt, yeast, and barrel flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

Poured into an Allagash coolship glass

A- Pours a deep, dark ruby red, almost brown color. Quite clear, not muddled at all, thick hearty head. Looks great.

S-Black currants, cherries, background acetic character though not bitingly reminiscent of vinegar, which is nice. Surprisingly, no notice of alcohol at 13%

T- Taste is more of the same, but it comes in waves and the alcohol gently warms on the finish. Starts off with Starts off as a cross between a cranberry and a black currant, then theres the cherry character, followed by some acetic notes drying everything off to reveal some warming alcohol. Fantastic brew

M- Is quite hearty, not surprising considering the ABV. the body is there, but as it sits the acetic qualities really dry it out. its excellent

O- The strong warming alcohol at the end is the reason I cannot go higher, but at the same time it comes off as relatively tame for a 13% brew. Definitely need to find more of these

This Beer is one of the few, the proud, the intangible. As a brewer I've had many renditions of sour from the most vinegar to the most horse-haired and this one is a delicate balance of wild strains. It doesn't taste the 13 percent advertised and has a complex nose. The flavor isn't overly sour but it has a pleasant tartness that can break through the other wild flavors and the dry finish doesn't linger on the tongue. It's brownish and a bit cloudy and has a solid carbonation profile.
