Presentation: 11.6 oz slender brown bottle with no freshness date found. Cute ,though in an odd way a little bit demented, yellow oerbier mascot on the front label. Oerbier means "Original Beer".

Appearance: Deep tawny brown colour with amber hues, creamy tiny bubbled lace to boot … seems to stick around for the duration without a problem.

Smell: Granny smith apples and tart berries in the nose, almost a sweet tart vinous (lemon) aroma with grain and earthy hops in the back. Alcohol is apparent with hints of pine spiciness and liquorice.

Taste: Silky smooth beyond belief, slick creamy mouth feel that glides over the tongue with perfection. Fullish body cradles the delicate malt mass, sweetness from the malt is soft yet dominant with a mild clinging tart almost winey flavour on its back. Fruitiness with a liking to ripe blood oranges and earthy currants meld well with the wine like tartness. Hops are veiled though a touch of leaf and mint is noticeable. Malt flavour seems to hold a vague similarity to a tangy raw honey and a chicory finish. Some residuals are leftover in the end with a touch of grassy medicinal phenolic.

Notes: Certainly one of the better beers to come out of Belgium though it is definitely one of the best beers in the world. Lively with the vinous flavours, fruity and sweet with a beefy yet a fragile malt … hops are lucid and are to flavour the brew. A marvelous brew.

My oh my this beer brought me to my knees, last had this one in a beer bar in Brussels called La Porte Noire (sp?) which is located in an 1800's brick cellar. Nice to see that we can get it in the states now.

Had this one at t'Brugs Beertje, here's my notes: dark ripe fruits, some dextrin sweetness, semi-sour, vinous qualities, very raisiny with slight burnt characters. Now that was day 3 in Belgium and after many (MANY) beers. I do remember it being one of the best that I tried. All of De Dolle's brew are.

330 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled in 6/2013. Pours very hazy deep ruby red color with a fairly dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty foamy lacing clings on the glass, with a large amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of pear, apple, raisin, plum, fig, white grape, caramel, candi sugar, bread, clove, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good complexity of fruity/earthy yeast ester and balanced dark/candi sugar malt sweetness; with good strength. Taste of big raisin, plum, fig, pear, apple, white grape, caramel, bread, candi sugar, clove, herbal, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Lingering notes of raisin, plum, pear, apple, fig, white grape, caramel, bread, candi sugar, clove, herbal, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity of fruity/earthy yeast with a good amount of dark/bready malt sweetness; with a great malt/yeast balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very smooth, crisp, and moderately slick mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent Belgian strong dark ale. All around great complexity and balance of fruity/spicy yeast and dark/bready malt sweetness; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

12oz Bottle received in trade with Rejtable - Thanks!

Appearance - Hazy brown colour with a good size frothy beige coloured head. There is a low amount of carbonation showing and there is some really good lacing. The head lasted for around 5 minutes before it was gone.

Smell - Malts, dark fruits, grape juice, dates

Taste & Mouth - There is an above average amount of carbonation and I can taste malts, dates, and raisins. There is also grape juice flavour, some anise, and a yeasty spiciness.

Overall - So far every beer I've had from this brewer has been a winner. I'd like to have regular access to their offerings. A great tasting belgian dark ale.

Reviewed from notes. Had on-tap at my first trip to Redlight Redlight in Orlando. Served in a tulip glass.

A: Deep dark crimson-brown in color, fairly clear, with a thin off-white head and relatively low visible carbonation.

S: Acetic, with tart cherries and sour grapes, a bit vinous and maybe some oaked vanilla.

T: This is where there were some surprises. I didn't have much in the way of a description available to me, so I didn't know what to expect. Some acetic and tart fruit (cherries and bananas) over a vegetal green coffee flavor in the dark malts. Then some clove and dark fruits. It finishes quite dry, with maybe a hint of cacao bitterness in the hang.

M: Medium body, carbonation on the low side for style, and moderate alcohol content.

O: Not sure this would be a beer I would reach for very often, but I couldn't find much to complain about aside from personal preference. Glad to have tried it once at least.

Bottled June 2013. 9% ABV.

A: Pours a medium reddish-brown. Fairly murky. Tall and very fizzy light brown head. Head fades surprisingly slow with great retention. Almost no lacing.

S: Very pleasant and sweet fruity aroma. Brown sugar and dark fruits. Lots of plums, prunes, raisins I'd say. Maybe even....apricot? Sweet bready malt, like poundcake.

T: Quite similar to the aroma. Lots of dark fruits, raisins are more prominent here but the rest are still included. Taste is a little less sweet than the aroma. Get cloves and more of a dark bread than a sweet bread now. Finish is slightly dry with some earthy spiciness and dried dark fruits.

M: Medium bodied, higher carbonation lends a thinner, airier body than expected for 9%.

O: A really nice fruity BSDA. Well balanced with nice complexity. Not overly heavy on the belgian yeast character, which I feel can overpower some brews. Not too sweet, not too heavy either.
