There aren't very many moments in my life where I instantaneously realize that I am at the right place at the right time at the right moment. Walking into Three Penny Taproom was one of these moments.
My first "oh shit!" moment dawned upon me when I walked in through the door and I noticed a very pretty girl sitting by herself at the small table closer to the door. Behind that pretty girl I saw a giant flag bearing the crest of the best football club this world has yet to see -- the colors of the mighty FC Barcelona were in full display at the bar. Not to take any credit away from the pretty girl, of course.
The second "oh shit!" moment dawned upon me when I sat down and saw that during a week when Lawson's was unavailable on tap everywhere else because they were busy preparing for their first Waitsfield Market / Hill Farmstead Anniversary Event, they were carrying Sip of Sunshine on tap.
The third "holy shit!" moment dawned upon me when being in an overly giddy mood, I glanced over my left shoulder and noticed their bottle list, and saw Lawson's Rum-barrel Fayston's Maple Stout being served for $15 dollars. Not that having tasted what has since then become my favorite stout should bias me into giving a better review for this place, it kept my buzz going and made me fall even further in love with the pretty girl at the tabl--I mean, Three Penny Taproom.
It was evident that I wasn't the only person who was having these feelings about TPT that fateful day when I set foot upon the establishment for the very first time--sitting two chairs away from me at the bar was a homely looking lady in her late 30s waxing lyrical about the bar because they carried her two favorite beers of all time in Hill Farmstead Edward and Alchemist's Heady Topper. Point being, everyone seems to love the pretty girl at tabl--again I mean, Three Penny Taproom.
I'd come here in between having a hefty lunch elsewhere and expecting to eat dinner with someone in Burlington so I opted to get the flank steak salad and it did not disappoint--I think somebody mentioned in a previous review that there is a negative correlation between the portion size and quality of food here, but I wish to dispel such claims as the salad (yes, a salad!) left me so full that I pushed my dinner appointment to two hours after its intended time. Oh, and the flank steak salad was as good as a flank steak salad can be.
So to summarize: excellent atmosphere, great beer, good food/portions, and pretty girl at the table.
What more can you ask for in life?

Great experience at Three Penny Taproom!
Beers on tap from Lawson's and Hill Farmstead are reason enough to go. But they go further. The food is very tasty. My girlfriend and I shared the cheese plate, which had a great selection of local VT cheeses. She had an egg salad sandwich, and I had the meat flatbread. Neither of us were disappointed with our choices.
Service is great, but not perfect. The bartenders can be a little slow at realizing you're there, but no big deal.
Overall, if you're in Montpelier or close to Montpelier...this should be your spot. I vacationed in VT and went there three times. Mainly for the beers :)
