A finally made a trip over to Valhalla when Jester King's brewer visited. This is a really unique place. The bar is located on the Rice University campus, right across from the Quad. It is a great spot, right under an old campus building. The bar is very narrow with arched ceilings. This really looks like an old dusty cellar. There are a few benches along the exterior walls, and a half rectangle bar centrally located along the back wall. There is also plenty of seating outside as well. There are no TV's, but really loud music is always playing. Lots of old Rice pictures hang on the wall. Like the team that won the Cotton Bowl. Also some odd things like an old dusty skeleton of an anteater. Interesting.
The service is good. The current manager really enjoys craft beer, and is up for a chat if you are so inclined. The rest of the bartenders might not know as much, but they work hard. The quality of the taps is fine. Though I am not a big fan of the plastic cups. I understand why they use them, I am just not a fan.
The selection is simple, but good. They have 6 taps. One for Lone Star, one for ZiegenBock. The other four are always rotating. Obviously when I was there they were all Jester King. Though plenty of other local beers rotate in as well. 512, Live Oak, Saint Arnold among them. There are lots of tap handles of other good micros lining the walls. Victory, Stone, Oscar Blues, etc. They will also have a cask every once in a while. The bottle list is much the same. Overall a very small, but good selection. You can not beat the prices either. 2.50 is as pricey as it gets for tap beers here.
Overall, a very unique place in Houston. There are not very many bars like this around, let alone on a college campus. A place I will be visiting again.
