Poured from a green 355 ml can with only the words Western, and Premium Pilsner to flash its ID, but same design for all of the new Western premium line. I'd consider this more of a macro lager still as opposed to a Czech Pilsener, and will review it along those lines.

A nice looking lager, big bright spongy white head on the pour, retention slowly fades down, but was there in the beginning to prove it could do it. The nose is grainy at first with light floral hops, but becomes sweeter over time as the beer warms, exposing either a sour grain or corn adjunct aroma underneath. The flavour is crisp up front, grains with some mild hops on the finish. Small sips will expose some mild imperfections, but if you take a good pull from the glass it all seems to come together a bit more cohesively. Slight sour grain aftertaste regardless though. The mouthfeel is akin to the rest of Western's premium line, average body with just enough carbonation to give it a bit of backbone.

Still, from what I've tasted from them so far I'd still stick with their premium lager if given the choice, this pilsener is still average fare for what it is, and doesn't do much to impress beyond that.

Great Western Brewing has dropped the "Great" from their packaging - now it's only Western, and are marketing their "premium" line. The green label and large Pilsner logo sure looks like their going after the Pil (Old Style Pilsner) crowd. Your average pilsner beer - pours a straw yellow color, fair head of white bubbles that don't last, thin lasting lace. Mildly hoppy aroma. Slightly sweet, malt flavor. Crisp pilsner taste, nothing overpowering or offensive with a clean aftertaste. Reasonably priced, easy to drink, available at every bar in Saskatchewan.

355ml can poured in a pint glass.

Clear, pale gold colour. Lots of nice streams of carbonation bubbles. 3/4 inch thick white head is nice and foamy but recedes to a thin layer. Some random thin lacing occurs.

Aroma is moderate: hoppy and mildly grainy. Some floral notes.

Nice hoppy bite at the start. Tempered a little by carbonation. Brief aftertaste is floral hops. This is better than what I expected. I thought this would be similar to "Old Style Pilsner" by Molson (basically a macro masquerading as a pilsener). However, this actually tastes like a pilsner. Nothing extraordinary, but refreshing, crisp, and clean.

Mouthfeel is light and very fizzy. About par for the course for a pilsener.

A good solid effort by Great Western! This is probably the best pilsener I've had in quite a while. In fact, I like it better than Pilsener Urquell. There isn't anything breathtaking about it, but it is true to style and well done. I've never really been the type to include pilseners as session beers, and this beer is no exception, but it is pleasant and will be finding it's way into my fridge again in the near future.

I used to buy this all the time until I clued in that it is soaked in preservatives, like all Western products. I'm not very educated with beers so all I can say regarding its drinking quality is that it is average. A decent flavor, but the sulphites really show up and this beer leaves a sluggish feeling in your system.
