Grabbed this from my local beer store Brewtopia with high recommendations from the crew there. I've had some great authentic and American versions of this style, which is one of my top favorite.

The look had me a bit worried right off, as the pour unveiled a mellow activity, a bit to relaxed
Usually there's a big, towering active white crown to this style, but it never really developed. A bit too clear as well, usually you will notice some nice yeastie haze happening, this one was totally clear....

The aroma was also not what I expect in this style as it was dominated by a fermented green apple, light grains, very tart, which is usually right on, but the aroma was underwhelming at best. Not nearly as complex as some of my favorite's of this style.

The taste was also very tart, fruity tartness, apricots, Sweet and sour but mostly sweet which I found odd. Soft and very subtle spice, not spicy enough IMO, Clean and crisp feel, but like the look just a bit to relaxed in the mouth feel. Not very dry, more juicy than l like. The feel also became cloying, sticky in the finish.

Basically, this one was nearly void of all of the really enjoyable aspects of this style. Perhaps my bottle was a lame duck, because clearly, this is a highly rated version of the style, but I call 'em as I taste 'em. I will give this another shot before I call it good.

One of the beers I sampled on my first trip to Belgium back in 2008 - I thought it was great then and now it's time to review!

A 330ml bottle with a BB of July 2014. Can't remember if I bought this in Belgium or over here. Described on the label as a 3-grain beer brewed to a 17th century recipe from the Carmelite order in Dendermonde. Contains wheat, barley and oats.

Poured into a Duvel tulip. Bottle conditioned. A rich golden hue with fine suspended sediment and good carbonation. Yields a large head of creamy white foam that lasts for a few minutes before subsiding to a patchy surface layer. Aroma of fruity yeast esters with hints of mild banana, subtle clove, white pepper, spice, grainy malt, faint biscuits, a touch of sugar and stewed hops. A whiff of warming booze in the background - very nice.

Tastes of fruity yeast esters with a lingering, dry finish. Notes of mild banana, clove, spice, grainy malt, sugar, subtle biscuits, faint grass/hay, a twinge of earthiness and stewed hops. An alcoholic hint lurks in the background. Well-attenuated, followed by a delicate, yeasty bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, tingly and dry, with prickly carbonation and good body. Slightly astringent, accompanied by an aftertaste of fruity esters, mild stewed leaves and subtle grain.

Very nice - a classic tripel. Looks great, while the aroma and flavour have a superbly balanced character that is dominated by Belgian yeast esters and hints of grain. The booze is nicely integrated. Good body. A tasty brew that goes down a treat - add this one to your must-try list.

Had on tap. It's a fantastic beer! Slightly sweet. Super smooth. Esters align with the great balance of the beer, equal amounts of banana, spice, belgian yeast. Soft, pleasnt bitterness inviting me to sip on-it was gone before I knew it. A nice balance of citrus, light caramel, balanced out by the soft, earthy hoppy bitterness. Thinner, but rounded, silky mouthfeel/body. Alcohol is perfectly covered, seems non existent. One of my new favorites. I am looking for clone recipe to replicate.

0,33l bottle.
Pours hazy, yellow-golden beer with stiff and huge white head. Aroma is citrusy, fruity (banana), spicy (coriander, clove), yeasty, simultaneously similar to witbier, owing to wheat.
Taste is rich, at first warming and full of alcohol, lemony, zesty, semisweet. Raw grains on palate. I'm very disappointed, the beer looks like overfermented witbier, lacking tripel charming significantly.

Beauty incarnate. Light and bubbly on the tough, light and bubbly in a snifter. Smells of banana, clove, biscuit, and a pleasant time about to come. Holds a steady stream of carbonation from first pour to last sip. A sneaky little bugger, too; you'd never guess it's 9.0 abv by smell or taste.
And you can find it at Costco, too, at least in Michigan. Never would have thought, but never more appreciative.
